Be it known that i, riLviN C. ldeConn, a Citizen oi the United States, residing Chicago, in the county oi Coeli and Sita-te liltL nois, have invented eertain new and im rovemcnts in Car-Axle Een Lids; and l do ereby declare the tollen" be a ull, clear, and errant description of the inve V"on, such as will enable others skilled in the srt to which it appertains to nia-ke and use the same. ,f
My present invention relates to oar-nido* bo); lids, and hss for its object to improve the same in the several particulars hereinafter noted.
The invention consists oi the novel ldevices end Combinations et devises hereinafter described, and deiined in the claiins.
Referring tothe drawings, Figure 1 is a view in side elevation showing the improved lid applied 'to oar-aXle box, some parts being broken away and some parts being see-- tioned. Fig. 2 is a vertical section taken through the box and lid on the line :e2 .rf et Fig. 1, some parts being` broken away. Fig. 3 is a view corresponding to Fig. 2, but show-` ing the lid in an open position; and Fig. l is a vertical section taken on the line .et af* of Fig. 2.
The axle-box 1 is oi the usual construction, except as hereinafter specifically pointed out, and it is provided with the 4eustomnry opening at its outer portion, the marginal portion of which iorrns e flat lid-seat 2.
The outer portion oil the upper wall oi the box at its intermediate portion transverse of the box is provided ivith laterally-spaced hingedngs 3, formed withV approximately horizontal thrust-surfaces fr and with approximately vertical tlnust-surtaces 5. A hinge-bolt passed through 'the innge-h1gs 3, and its ends terminate inward oit' the sides of the box l. The top plate or the box 1 is also provided with a vertical web 7, that is formed integral therewith and with the inner portions of the laterally-spaeed hinge-lugs 3. it Will be noted that the said web 7, is located considerably inward oi` the hingebolt G, so that a clearance is .lett around said hingebolt between it and the hinge-lug 3. i
The lid 8 is formed st its intermediate upper portions with an outwardly-bulged pocket Q and 'with alined sleeve portions 10 on' the opposite sides of said pocket. The sii-eyes 1U vork looselyT and niih considerable elear- Letters atent. Patented Jan. l, 190,7.

bolt 5, and the upper portion. oi said pocket 9 curved to 'form a segmental journal-surface hingebolt 6 which is between .the laterallys aced hing-Mugs 23. The plate portion 13 of tne spring device 11 12 is passed through a seat 9a in the lower extremity 0i' the lidpoeleet 9 andis thus loosely connected to the Central portieri oi the lid S. rThis feature is closing force to the Central or intermediate portion oi the lid and causes the lid to be tightly seated at all four edges or at its entire marginal portion against the entire mouth or lid-seat oi the boX.
The intermediate spring 12, as is' evident, is capable ot only pivotal movements -on the hinge-bolt 6, While the free ends of the springs 11 are capable of sliding movements on the thrust-lugs 3. The tension of said springs is such that they pinch upon or tend to press together the'parts with Which they engage, and the result is that when the free ends of the springs l1 are en aged with the thrustsuriaees 5 the attached or connected ends of the said springs are moved pivotally toward the mouth of the box. This result# ing force oi the springs acting upon the lid forces the same against the mouth oi the box and holds the same seated. inasmuch as the loree of the said springs 'and inasmuch as the lid-closing lorce ci the said spring is applied to the central portion of the lid, it isi/evident that said lid will. be seated against the box at its upper, lowenand side portionsj The obvious piu-piso of clearance between the hinge- )oit 6 and the sleeves 10 df the lid-pocket 9 is to permit the lid to be freely seated against th box without interference from said hinge- )o t. v
YVhen the lid is turned into its open positien, (shown in Fig. 3,) the springs 11 engage the upper horizontal thrust-suriaoes 4 of the hinGe-lugs, and they then tend to hold the lid in such position.
ance around the end portions oil the hingef lugs 3, and the i'ree end of the spring 12 is i., that directly engages that portion of the A very important, because it applies the lid- IOO IIO
The arrangement of an intermediate spring y between lateraily-spaced opposing springs is dt sirable, because it prevents torsional .strains upon the lid'that is, it prevents the one side of the lid t'rom being pressed more tightly closed than the other: but the same general results, broadly stated, may be secured by the use ot tivo opposing spriiigs, in which. case only a single cooperating lng on th-t box with the i)roperly-arranged thrust surface or surfaces would be. rei uired.
The device, while extreme y si'i'nple, is l'iighly 'illicient for the purposes had in view. li`urtlnrinore, the lid may be very easily and quickly attached to the box and removed therefrom.
Any kind ot an' arrangement of opposing Springs arranged to react against a suitable base of reaction on the box and against the centralita: intermedia te portion ot the hd and to impart a closing movement to the lid would be within the scope o`l` this inve. lion. It is immaterial whether the .hinge-liolt t3 mounted io rotate in its beni-ings on the box or whether it is fixed against rotation in sueh bearings. 'The spring i2 or corresponding spring may also press ainst a lug or part cast integral with the box, ii desirei'l, and instead olt having a crooked curved end tor en gagement with the said bolt orgeorrespending part it might be. otherwise held against endwise nnwements with respeet to the lid. The `in'iportant feature the arrangement ol the tno springsso that their opposing forces impart a. pivotal closing movement. to the lid and apply such. closing l'orce to the;` central or intermediate portion of the lid, so tha t the lidV when closed will be pressed at all tour odg-jes or at its ent ire marginal portion against the month or lid-seat ol' the box. i
l. 'l'he eombimition with a. box and a lid hingedy thereto, of opposing springs reacting against the central or intermediate portion ol' the lid and serving to cause the lid to swing into a closed posit-ion and to press said lid against the entire month or lid-seat ol' the box, substantially as described.
Q. The ifon'ibinntion with a box and a lid hinged thereto, ot opposing springs loosely connected to the central or intermediate portion ot" the lid and arranged to swing with said lid, one ol said springs being arranged to reaet against a base ot reaction on the box and to move pivotally, and the other oll said springs being arranged to react against anot'ner base of reartion on the box and to slide thereon, the said springs eo },erating to impart a closing movement to the lid and to seat the lid against the entire month or lidseat ol" the box., substantially as described.
2)). l`lucombination with a. box having a hingelug'and a hinge bolt or shalt. ol a lid hinged to said box, and opposing lealsi'n'ings reacting, thc-fone against said lungo-bolt and the otlur against a I'ln'ust-snri'aee on said i i i i I thrust-lng, and which springs serve to impartv closing movement tosaid nd, and to seat the same against the box, substantially as deseribed.
4. rihe combination withialbox having a hinge-lug and a hinge-imlt, ol' a lid hinged to said box, and opposing springs applied to the central portion of said lid, one of which springs reacts against said hingednolt and is p'ivotod thereon, and the other of which springs reacts against a thrust-surface on said thrust-lug, and which springs impart 'pivotal closing movement to said lid, and
sea-t' the same against the box, both at its upper and lower portions, substantiallyA described.
5. The combination with a box having a hinge-lug and a. hinge-bolt, said lug having 'upper and lower tlmust-surfaces, ot a lid hinged to said box, and opposing leaf-springs applied to the central portion olisaid lid, one et wliich springs reacts against said hingebolt and is pivoted thereon, and the other el' which springs is engageable with the upper of the. thrust-surfaces ol said hinge-lug to hold the lid in an open position, and is engageable with the lower ot the thrnstsiirtaces of said lug, to impart pivotal closing movement to said lid, the said Springs serving to seat the lid against'. the box, both at `its upper and lower portions, substantially as described.
ti. 'lhe combination with a ear-axle box having lateraltv-spai-eil hinge-lugs and a hinge-holt, oi'- a. lid having sleeve portions that snrria'ind the end portions of said hinge holt with elearanre, and opposing leatsprings applied to the central portion olt said hd, eertain oi' said springs having a curved end that engages the intermediate portion of said hingbolt, and certain other ot said syn-ings reacting against a thrust-surface et said hinge-lug, the said springs serving to .impart pivotal closing niovement to said lid and acting to seat said lid against the box, both at its upper and lower portions, substantially as described.
7. The eon'ibination with a box l having laterallysspaeml hinge-lugs 3 formed with thrust-surl'ams 4 and 5, ol a hingebolt 6 projeeting through said lugs, a lid tw having sleeve portions l() surrounding the projecting ends ol' said hinge-bolt with clearance, and an' intermediate spring 12 and laterallyspaced springs l l applied to the central portion o' said lid, said spring l2 having a curved end l2n that engages said hinge-bolt, and the .said sprii'igs ll pressing against =said hingelugs and engageable with the tlirust-surl'aees t and 5 thereof, substantially as described.
