PIN-SECURING MEANS.

This invention relates to means for seour' ing a pin or pivot, used in connection with car journal box lids, against accidental displacement.
The objects of the invention are to provide means of this kind of improved and sim plified construction whereby the pin is held in place in depressions or recesses in the journal box and no nuts, cotter pins or the like are required.

A represents the car journal or axle box and B the lid therefor which closes the opening in the end of the axle box and which is pivoted to the axle box by means of a pin or the like 6 which engages in bearing lugs 01' projections a formed on the journal box, the lugs in the construction shown being connected by an integral web portion a. The lid is provided with the usual thrust device which acts to keep the lid in either the closed or open position, the device shown in the drawings for this purpose comprising a coiled spring C which is arranged about a stud or guide pin or rod D, one end of which is pivoted on extensions or projections (Z of the lugs a of the journal box and the other end of which has a sliding engagement with an ear or lug 6 formed on the journal box lid and against which one end of the spring G presses. The other end of the spring bears against a shouldered or enlarged portion (1 of the guide rod. The pivotal axis about which the guide rod D swings is so arranged with regard to the axis of the pin 6 that the spring C, when in the position shown in full lines in Fig. 1, will hold the lid in the closed Specification of Letters Patent.

position, and when the lid is swung into the dotted line position shown in Fig. 1 the spring will hold the lid open. All of these parts have heretofore been used in connection with car journal boxes and of themselves form no part of this invention.
The guide pin or rod D is pivoted on the journal box by means of a pivot pin F which extends through a hole in the enlarged portion (Z of the guide rod D. The ends of the pivot pin are journaled in the lugs or proj ections (Z which are provided with a hole 7 with which a hole 7 in the enlarged portion (Z of the guide rod may be brought into registration to enable the pin F to be placed into its operative position. The lugs (l are also provided with recesses or sockets f formed on the inner faces of the lugs and into which the pivot pin is moved by means of the spring C. The pin F when in position in the recesses f is held against endwise movement by means of web portions f on the outer faces of the lugs (Z, and the tension of the spring C holds the pivot pin against movement out of the sockets or recesses F. The recesses f extend inwardly from the hole f in such a direction that the action of the spring C in all of its positions will tend to force the pivot pin F into the sockets f and thus hold the pin at all times against accidental displacement. If it is desired to remove the pivot pin F, the guide rod D is moved against the action of the spring C so as to bring the hole in the enlarged portion (5 thereof into register with the holes f in the lugs (Z, which permits the pin to be easily removed from the journal box.
By means of the construction described the pin is securely held in place in the lugs of the journal box and no heads or nuts are required on the pin, nor is it necessary to weaken the pivot pin by boring holes in the same for cotter pins or other means for holding the pivot pin in place. The construction is simple and inexpensive and makes it possible to easily and quickly secure the guide rod in place or to remove the same from the journal box.
I claim as my invention:
'1. The combination with a journal box and a lid pivoted thereto, of a rod mounted on said lid and having a pivotal connection with said journal box, a pair of lugs on said journal box on which said rod is pivoted, and a pivot pin connecting said rod and said lugs, said lugs having holes adapted to register with holes in said rod for placing said pin in operative position and having recesses into Which said pin is adapted to enter and in which the pin is held against endwise movement.
2. The combination with a journal box, a rod pivoted thereon, and a spring engaging said rod, of a pivot pin connecting said rod and said journal box, said journal box and said rod having holes adapted to be moved into registration and into which said spin :is adapted to pass, said journal box having res cesses formed adjacent to said holes-in which the iPlQVOt pin is adapted to be held by said spring and in which the :pin is held against :GIlClWlSe dlsplacement.
3. The combination With a journal 'box, a
rod pivoted thereon, and a spring engaging said rod, of a pivot pin connecting said rod and said journal box, parts onsaid journal box between Which one end of said rod extends, and which are provided With holes adapted to register with a hole in said rod 2 and'a pivot pin adapted to 'bezpassed through said holes when the same are in registration, said :parts of the journal box being provided on their inner faces With recesses, said spring normally holding said rod in a :position 'in which said holes are out of registration and in \vhichsaid ipin enters said recesses and -is held against endwise displacement therein.
4. The combination with a journal box,
