Since this spring mechanism does not form a part of my invention it will not be necessary to further describe the same, although it is to be understoodthat this form of spring mechanism is merely illustrated for convenience and my device may be used with other types of spring mechanism than the one shown.
The lid 5 has an intermediate portion 5 which extends at an angle to the side walls of the said lid, as will'be clearly seen from the dotted lines 5 in Figs. 1 and 7. A spring receiving recess or cavity 9 may conveniently-be formed in the said lid by providing on the outer face of the lid a substantially rectangular projecting boss 10 and by continuing the side walls of the said boss on the interior or inner face of the lid, as clearly shown at 11. This recess 9 preferably extends parallel with the side walls of the said lid 5 and at an angle to the intermediate portion 5 so that the inner wall 12 at its upper portion is spaced away from the inner faceof'the portion 5 This portion of the inner wall 12' at its upper portion is spaced away from the inner face of the portion 5 This portion of the inner wall 12 of the said recess is provided with a longitudinally extending slot 13, the purpose of which will hereinafter be set forth. a
The locking block 14 preferably comprises a bodyportion 15, which is shaped to conform to and closely fits within the recess 9, a locking'lug 16 and a web 17 which serves to connect the said lug to the body portion.
The slot 13 'hereinbefore described is adapted to receive the web 17 of the locking block 14 and permits the necessary movement of the locking block from locked to unlocked position. Thepurpose and object of extending this slot the full height of the said wall 12 is to permit the insertion of the locking block at the upper end of the said recess, To yieldingly maintain thelock in locking position I provide a spring 18 which is interposed between the upper face of the said block and suitable abutments provided at the upper end of the said recess '9. These abutments may be formed either by providing the inner wall 12 of the said recess'with upwardly projecting tongues 12*, which are clearly shown in Fig. 4, or by providinga plurality of rivets 12 as clearly shown in Fig. 8. In the form shown in Fig. 4 the upwardly projecting tongues 12 are relatively thin and narrow and are separated from the upper portions of the adjacent side walls 11 so that these tongues may be bent inwardly by any suitable means into a position substantially parallel with the said upper ends of the walls ll-after the locking block and spring 18 have been inserted within the recess 9. It will of course be understood that the spring 18 is placed under a desired. degree of compression by either tion.

In order to prevent the entrance of dust and dirt into the journal box a flange 20 may be provided on the lid,5, the said flange being adapted'to surround the edges of the open ing in the front face of the said box 1.
1 It will be obvious that in the form of recess shown in Figs. 1 to 4, inclusive, the looking mechanism may be operated by the insertion into the lower end of the recess of any form of straight bar of sufficient strength to compress the spring 18 and to therebymove the'locking block l i upwardly and out of contact with the lip 19. While this formof cavity possesses many advantages it is often desirable to providea looking mechanism which cannot be operated except with a proper form of operating bar or key, and my improved mechanism may be modified as clearly indicated in Fig. '7 to accomplish this desired result. Since the form of mechanism is identical with that shown in the other figures of the drawing, it will be only necessary to describe the modification of the locking cavity for a 'complete understanding of this embodiment of the invention. The lower end of the cavity 21 instead of extending parallel or substantially parallel to the plane ofthe lid is turned at an angle thereto and preferably opens on the inner'face' of the said lidata point below the flange 20, the outer wall of the said cavity being curved as clearly shown at 22 to conform to this change of direction of the cavity. In this form'of construction it is readily apparent that the looking mechanism cannot be operated by a straight bar since the opening at the end of the cavity is not sufficient to permit a straight bar to be entered and angled so as to contact the locking block. I therefore provide a special form of operating bar'or key 23 which is furnished intermediate its ends, and preferably closely adjacent one end, with a cranked portion 24. The extension 25 of the bar is adapted to contact the lower face of the locking block, and the cranked portion -is of suflicient width and extent to permit the necessary movement of the bar to unlock the locking block 14.
Having now fully described my invention, what I claim and desire to secure by Letters Patent is i 1. The combination with a journal'box, of a lid pivotally connected thereto, a locking member slidably mounted in a recess pro vided in the said lid, and means integral with said lid for operatively connecting the locking member thereto. said recess extending below the said locking'member and being adapted to receive means for operating the said member.
2. The combination witha journal box, of a lid pivotally connected thereto, said lid having a recess therein, the lower end of said recess being ad acent the lower edge,
of the said lid, a lock movably mounted within the said recess, and means integral with the said lid and extending into the path of travel of said lock for preventing the ac cidental displacement of the said lock.
