To all whom, t Netty concern:
Be it known that I, VILLIAM HULL BROWN- ING, a citizen of the United States, and a resident of the city of New York, borough of Manhattan, county and State of New York, have invented a new and Improved Tobacco- Container, of which the following is a full, clear, and exact description.
This invention is an improved device primarily for containing cigars and keeping them in a proper moist condition, but may be used with advantage for containing tobacco in other forms.
Considerable difficulty has been experienced in keeping cigars in atmospheres which are very dry or which are overladen with moisture. Devices as now in use for this purpose have been found to be inefficient, owing to the fact that the humidity of the air in the container in which they are kept is not uniform.
The object of this invention is to overcome this disadvantage and produce an effective and simple device for holding the cigars which will at all times keep them in proper order.
Reference is to be had to the accompanying drawings, forming a part of this specification, in which similar characters of reference indicate corresponding parts in both the figures.
Figure l is a central vertical section through a glass bottle embodying my invention 5 and Fig. 2 is a perspective view of the stopper for the bottle in section, said section being taken substantially on the line .2 2 of Fig. l.
In carrying out the invention l preferably employ a glass bottle l of such size and shape that it will suitably contain various sizes of cigars. This bottle is provided with a large mouth 2 in order that the cigars may be readily taken from or placed in the bottle without difliculty and which is normally closed when not in use by an integral glass stopper 3, which in practice will be ground, as also its seat in the neck of the bottle, to snugly fit therein. This stopper is preferably constructed with an enlarged head in order that it may be handled with ease and withdrawn from its seat when desired to obtain access to cigars in the bottle or restore the same. The lower end of the stopper is formed with a cavity 4 of such size that it will contain the proper quantity of water to keep the air in the bottle in a proper moist condition. The size of this cavity will of course depend upon the size of the bottle which is employed. Rising in the center of this cavity to near its top is a stem 5, made as an integral part of the stopper and having an aperture 6, providing a passage between the cavity and the bottom end of the stopper, and therefore between the cavity and the interior of the bottle when the stopper is seated thereon. It is apparent from this construction that when the stopper is inverted and filled through the aperture on again turning the stopper in an upright position the water will fall into the annular ring surrounding the stem 5 and cannot be spilled therefrom no matter in what position the stopper is turned. The surface of this water when the stopper is in place will be evaporated by the air and conducted through the aperture 6 to the interior of the bottle, keeping the atmosphere therein at the proper humid point.
Having thus described my invention, I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent- In combination with a tobacco-container, a stopper having a cavity therein, and a stem rising from the base of said cavity having an aperture passing through it forming communication between the cavity and container, for the purpose described.
