Description
No. 839,706. PATENTED DEC. 25, 1906 w. W. Bgwsic. I PRBSSER FOOT FOR SEWING MACHINES.
APPLICATION TILED APB 27,1904.
Mtnci lizvenf ow. MM @W :Specification of Letters ietent,
Patented Xian. 2e, ieee.
Application filed April 2'7, 190%. Serial lie. 206,109.
To all mil/(my it v a/y concern:
Be it known that 1, WILLIAM i V. Bnwsxo, a citizen 6:? the United States, residing st Elyrie, in the county of Lorain and State of Ohio, have invented e certain new and useful improvement in a, Presser-Foot for Sewing-Machines, of which the following is e i'uli, clear, and exact description, reference being had to the accompanying drawings.
In the menufecture of'g urments, genereily and particularly underweists, as set forth in my Patent No. 758,892, issued May 3, 1904;, the buttons end the shoulder-straps, together with the tabs,ai'e secured to the WiLiSir band by means-of a strip which has its raw edges folded under and also hes a.- row of stitching adjacent to each folded edge for the ourposeof securing all the parts in piece. linen the buttons are sec red by simply inserting the tapes thereof under the edges of .Lhe strip and then stitching ihi'ough the strip, through the tapes, and into the bend, the buiions which are on the upper edge of the strip are liable to rip the stitching at that point and pizi out. it has thereforebeen fo und necessary to insert the tapes of the buttons under the strip and fold. the tapes thereof back over and on top of the strip before it is stitched e1 this edge, so that the stitching will pass throuqh the tape, through the strip, through the tapes again, and then through the waist band. I have found that e deal of time is saved in supplying machine with a resser-foot which will pei'mit the arrangement of the tapes of the buttons in the manner just described, so that the parts may be all stitched one operation, and this pressez foot is the subjeciemeiter of my sppiicetion.
i/Vhile the invention may be applied to any style of machine, i prefer to use it in con nection with a doi1bienee ile machine and in connection with one of the type which is' designed to sew a strip onto a band. in other words, I intend to provide a presserfoot with a guide for the strip and with a passage-way running longitudinally through the foot between the two needles, whereby the buttons may pass iliereihrough e1. 1 not in any Way interfere with the operation of the presser-fooi or the needles.
The invention may be briefly summarized as consisting in the construction and con1- bination of parts hereinafter (iGSCKil)Qd,9JZd pointed out in the cieims.
Referring to the drawings, Figure 1 is a perspective iew showing the application of cured to 'v presser-bar is the r'esser-ioot B, villi-ii ibstentieliy of the o1'm ,shown end co of the two foot portions 1; 5, space we to leeve a passage therebetween. 'iiiese two i'oot portions eye orrang J 'o cooperate with the 0rd inery throatpime (not; shown) end cause "the feeding of the :meteriel to be sewed. These foot poftionr; are else provided with needle-openings b l blended to the forward end of the fooflportion :5 is the stri -guide 6 extending up slightly in hem of the foot, as showm'and provided at its forward end with e pair; of downwzioily-extending shoulders 6 to which is s cured a rod If, adopted to carry a guideplnte if. The forward end of the foot portion and the forward port of the foot por' tion Z) are bot h errenged so that the passage between these foot portions b i) is eoniinu'ed out at one side.
The operator passes the strip C hrough" the guide formed by the rod 32 end plate b 1 down into position under both of the presserfoot portions and on the u oper side of the waistband C. The stitching operation is then begun. The buttons D upon the right side oi? the strip C he ve their iepes :2 inserted under the same, Whiie those on the ieft-hend side are firs's inserted. ii between the foot p01- tions and the tapes the 's-Of drawn under the left-hand foot portion, then the free ends drawn beck again against the edge 01 the uide-plate b and under the strip Q. The feeding of the strip, together with the bend, causes the iorweid movement of the button tapes, together wish the buttons, which re" sults in the sewing of all the parts in their proper relationship.
fieving described my invention, I hereby oieimi. In combination with e double-needle sewing-machine, a piesser-foot therefor having' a guidewey between the needles, and e strip-guide? front of said guidewey errenged to; 'ide e feed-space hot-ween the strip-guide zigid the neeiles, said feed-spece opening from the side and curving into said I guideway whereby a tape carrying a butt-ton may be led from the side into the rentral guidqwa) between the needles.
2. In combination with a double-needle l sewing-niaehine, :Lpresser-l'oot therefor havin; openings for the passage of the needles there! hrough and a passage-Way between said openings. said passage-way opening at one side of said p'resser-l'oot and in front of the newlle-openings whereby buttons and their tapes may be fed in from the side and guided through the said passage-way between the needles, and {t strip-guide earried by said foot and extending approximately from one side of the foot to the other aeross the front thereof, whereby the strip will be fed to both needles,
2%. In eombination with a double-needle sewing-maehine, a presser-foot th refor eonsisting of two toot portions each having an openin therein for the passage of a needle theretln'ough, said portions being separated from eaeh other to form a. passageway therebetween and said passage-av opening at the side of said foot and in front of the needle-openings whereby buttons and their tapes may be fed in from tho side. and direeted between th needles, and a strip-guide set-tired to the forward end of one of said port ions and (attending, substat'uially from one side ol' the foot to the other.
4. In combination with a double-nmwlle sewing-maehim. a presser-loot. therel'or eon- Siistillg of two foot portions, one for Patel! needle, said portions bein separate from earh other to form apassagewa' therebetween, a 1 strip-guide earried by on]. ol said portions, and extending substantially across to said other foot portion, and a guide-plate carri d by said strip-guide below the same and extending under a portion of the. passage-way. t
5. in combination w'th a.double-ueedle sewing-machine, a presser-toot therefor haymg two footportions spaced apart to form a passage-nay therebe'tweeu, a strip-guidesecured to one of said foot portions and extending across in from of the opposite foot portion and forming; with that portion a side opening to said passage-Way, a loop upon said guide for the strip, and a plate secured to'the lower portion of said loop extending down under the foot and under a portion of the passage-way.
'6. ln ('otnbinutioti with a double-needle sewingauaehine, a presser-hmt therefor having two toot portions spaced apart to form a passage-war lor a button therebetween, a
prop-etion upon one of said foot portions whleh extends aeross m iront of the other foot portion, but allows for an entranee at the sid ol the loot to the passagwway between the loot portions, a loop earried upon the under -ide of said projeetion l'or guiding the st rip to both needles. and a plate. earried by one member of said loop. and xtending down under the projeetion substantially ate-Foss the opening at the ent ranee at the side tliereol'.
7. In eombinat ou with a double-need sewirig-machine, a prtsser-loot having 'tw-e l'oot portions, a guide earried by one o'lsaid portions for the strip, and a plate earried by said guide, said foot portions being spat-ed apart to form a passage'nav for the button and said plate extending under a portion of the passageway thus ioruied.
1n testimony whereo'f .i hereunto atliX my signature in the presence of two witnesses.
