a tit {I D. D. HOWE, OF BEAVER DAM, WISCONSIN.
Letters Patent No. 83,966, dated November 10, 1868.
INIPRQ'VED RAILWAY-CAR COUPLING.
The Schedule referred to in these Letters Patent and making part of the same.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known th t I, D. D. HOWE, of Beaver Dam, in the county of Dodge, and State of \Visconsin, have invented a new and improved Gar-Coupling; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description thereof, which will enable others skilled in the art to make and use the same, reference being had'to theaccompanying drawings, forming part of this specification.
The nature of this invention relates to improvements in car-couplings, the object of which is to provide a more durable, reliable, and eflicient coupling than those now in use.
.It consists of constructing the buffer of two parts, one of which, provided with three walls of the opening for the hook, is rigidly secured to the framing of the car. The other, constituting the top wall of the said opening, is connected to a-yoke, which is supported upon the eud' of a lever, whereby it may be raised when desired. It may also be raised by the hook, when the cars come together for coupling. It is arranged to be held in a downward or closed position by a spring. The said stationary'part is provided with a round bolt, against which the hook draws, which bolt is arranged so as to be readily removed, for the substitution of another when worn, and a sliding rod is connected to the said lever, which serves as a plunger,
for throwing off the hook, for uncoupling the cars,as
will be more fully described on reference to the accompanying drawings, wherein- Figure 1 represents a front view of my improvement, and
Figure 2 represents a section on the line x-x of rig. 1.
Similar letters of reference indicate corresponding parts.
A represents the framing of the car, and B the buffer, which is madeof two parts, 0 and D, the part G being rigidly secured to the car. The part B, constituting the top, is connected to the yoke E, which rests upon the lever F, and-is constantly borne downward, by the spiral springs G, on the rod H.
I represents a rod or bolt, running transversely through the stationary portion of the buffer, to support the strain of the hook, and is arranged so as to be readily removed, to substitute another when worn.
The lever F is suspended from the framing in any suitable manner, and the outer end is fixed to work in suitable guides.
\Vhen the cars are to be coupled together, the end of the hook, being presented to the enlarged mouth of the opening in the buffer, in the usual manner, will,
on being forced inward, raise the movable part 1) sufficiently to allow the catch of the hook to pass in beyond the bolt 1, and catch over it, when it will be held securely by the said part B, being held down'hy the spring. 7
To disconnect the hook from the bolt, the lever F is borne down at its outer end, whereby the part D of the buffer is raised, and the plunger L, on the top of the bolt, is raised against the inner end of the hook, forcing it up above the bolt. This operation may be cfl'eeted while the car is being drawn by the hook, if desired, the face of the shoulder of the hook, which draws against the bolt, being straight, which construction of the hook is admissible,'by reason of the arrangement of the part D of thebufler, whereby it constantly holds the hook in contact with the bolt.
If it be desired to do so, the lever F, at its outer end, may be secured at the lowest p'osition within'the range of its movement by a pin, M, thereby maintaining the plunger L on a line with the upper face of the bolt I, which will permit the coupling of the cars when they come in contact. 7
I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent- The buffer B, constructed, as described, of the fixed part G and the movable part D, operated by the springbolt H, yoke E, and lever 13, whereby the mouth of said bu'fier is expanded or contracted, substantially as described, for the purpose specified.
. D. D. HOWE.
