UNITED A STATES PATENT OFFICE.
JESSE B. RUM SEY, OF WASHINGTON, DISTRICT OF COLUMBIA.
IMPROVED CAR-COUPLING.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 57,385, dated August 21, 1866.
' the end of the car in the ordinary way. This case is provided w h a suitable opening or mouth at its outer end, and through which to pass the link Within said case is secured the spring B, which extends forward to the end of the case and having two jaws, K K, formed on the end. The construction of the aforesaid spring B is quite similar to that of the ordinary sugar-tongs, being wider at the rear portion than at the forward, and attached to the case A by means of a screw, 0.
0 represents a spindle, which is firmly secured, horizontally, within the spring B by means of a thread upop it and a corresponding thread made in the end of the spring,.as shown at z. y
H represents a sliding plate attached to the upper portion of the spring B at its forward end, and connected by rivets to metallic bracket G. This bracket is one piece of metal, with the two ends bent down at right angles, the
rear flange being provided with a circular opening, through which passes the end of the spindle.
F represents a spiral spring, which encircles the spindle between the rear flange of the bracket G and the end of the spring B, being connected to the said bracket as shown.
It will be seen that whenever the link E is forced between the jaws KK they separate from each other by means of their common spring B, and allow the coupling-pin D to pass downward through semicircular openings made in the ends of said jaws. (See Figure 2.) When the link passes between the jaws the end strikes the outer flange of thebracket G and slides (with the sliding-plate H) in the slot (17, compressing the spiral spring F sufficiently to allow the coupling-pin to drop and connect the cars, when the spring uncoils and resumes its former position.
In the construction of this device the case A is provided with a small chamber, N, to prevent the pin D from being detached from the coupler. The aforesaid pin has a bulb at the lower end, and. is connected to the case A and through chamber N from the under side of the case, and riveted or secured at the top by means of a ring or other suitable device. The bulb being larger than the opening at the top of the chamber, it cannot be drawn through or extracted from the car. i
jaws, so that the cars are connected of themselves, obviating the necessity of persons passing between the cars to guide the link.
Having thus fully described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
The eccentric spring B, spindle O, coil-sprin g F, plate H, bracket G, and pin D, together with a metal case, A, when constructed and arranged in the manner herein set forth.
JESSE B. BUMSEY.
