Car Coupling.
No; 96,816. Patented Nov. 16, 1869- (finned smo new (timid.
Letters Patent-No. 96,816, dated Noce'm ber 16, 1869.
IMPROVED RAILWAY-CAR COUPLING.
\ The Schedule referred to in these Letters Patent and making part of the same an Improvement in Gar-Couplings; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full and exact descrip tion thereof, which will enable those skilled in the art to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, and letters marked thereon,
making apart of this description, in which Figure 1 is a perspective representation of one-half of a car-coupling, constructed according to myimproved plan.
Figure 2, a longitu'linal central section of the same.
The nature of the present invention consists in the peculiar construction of the coupling-pin, and the novel manner in which it isoperated.
A represents a coupling-bumper, which is constructed in the ordinary manner, except" that part appertaining to the coupling-pin B.
This pin is made about three times as wide as it is thick, and it is rounded off at its low er front edge, to allow a link, I, striking against it, to raise it up, and pass hack into the slot J and look over the notched part of the pin F; and it is provided with a 'slot, L, in which a crank-lever, D, is placed, to raise the pin.
This crank-lever has hearings in standards fastening to and projecting up from the bumper A, and, by using a longer pin, they maycxtend higher, if the convenience of the operator shall require it.
By 'means of this construction and arrangement, an automatical coupling is provided when the pin is in position, as at fig.- 2; but, when the pin is raised out, as shown by dottedlines X X, same figure, by means of the crank I), it will remain in that position until replaced in the pin-hole. r
This provision is made for making up trains, and moving cars without coupling them. I
The bumper and it's devices attached to the opposite car, being the same as the one shown, require no description.
Having thus described my invention,
That I claim, and desire to secure by Letters Patent of the United States, is-
In combination with the bumper A and the standards 0, attached to it, the pin B, provided with a slot, L, rounded edge G, and notch F, and operated by the crank D, as and for the purpose set forth.
LEO LALEY.
