Letters Patent No. 92,365, dated July 6,- 1869.
IMPROVED RAILWAY-CAR COUPLING.
The Schedule referred to in these Letters Patent and making part of the same.
To all whomt't may concern Be it known that I, JAMES RILEgofOhicago, in the county of Cook, and State of Illinois, have invented an Improved Car-Coupling; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, andexactdescription thereof, whichwill enable others skilled in the art to make and use the same, reference being bad to the accompanyiu g drawings, and letters marked thereon, making a part of this specification, in whichv Figure 1 is a perspective representation of my improved car-coupling. I
Figure 2, a perspective representation of the elongated catch removed from the other parts.
Figure 3, an elevation of the coupling, with one draw-bar removed.
Figure 4, a perspective view of one of the couplingpius, removed.
' Figure 5, a plan view of the jaws, s0 broken away as to show the spring which holds them fast to the pin.
Figure 6, a .viewof the under side of the devices for supporting the lower end of the lever.
The present invention relates to an improvement in that class of couplings which are designed to act auto-,
'matically; and
Its nature consists in the use-of jaws, which are opened by a lever, placed between them and pivoted to a bar, which is held in place by a strong staple and lugs; and, in combination with the foregoing, an elongated catch and bmnpers, the latterprojectiug out far enough from one of the draw-bars for the jaws to 0pcratc between them.
' A 15 represent the draw-bars, which mayhave any length for the convenience of fastening them to the ('itl'h'.
The draw-bar B has a horizontal 'sh t iu its inner cud, of suitable size to receive a lug, N, projecting out from the elongated catch L, said bar and lug having mortiscs through them to receive a pin, 0, figs. 1
and 4.
This pin is so rccessed out at E E as to be heldin place by the strain on lug N when the cars are in motion. v I
The draw-bar A has a horizontal slot made in it, of suitable size to receive the pivoted ends G of the jaws I which are held in said draw-bar by means ofa pin, 0, ligs.l and 4, put through a hole, X, formed by cutjaws F, as seen by dotted lines Z, fig. 5,- when the HP-' per end of the lever is moved in the direction indicated by the dart a, and thus release the notched ends H H from the catch'L.
The lower end of the lever is pivoted to a bar, V,
which is held in place by a staple, W, rigidly fastened to the under side of thedraw-bar A, and strengthened by .lugs U, through which the staple passes, and which are bolted fast, at their opposite ends, to the drawbar A.
Bum pers P are rigidly attached to the inner end of the draw-bar A, and have projecting arms Q Q diverging from each other, for the purpose of giving to their strong end piece R suclllength as will strike the drawbar B when cars of different heights are to be coupled.
The catch'L is also elongated above and below the draw-bars for this purpose.
If it should become necessary to operate the coupling from the tops of cars, lovers can be readily attached to an eye, ll, on the upper end of lever T. i
At fig. 5, a part of the jaws F,'is broken away,.t0 show a coil-spring, c, which locks the notched ends H H over the catch L. I
The ends of this spring are provided with screws j, which hold in those parts h of the jaws F enclosing the ends of the slot in which the spring is placed.
By means of-this construction and arrangement, an automatic car-coupling is provided, which is uotlikely to get out of order, and, which can be operated very conveniently, and at the same time practically answer the purpose designed.
Having thus described my invention, What I claim, and desire to secure by Letters Patent of the United States,.is The draw-bars A B, bumpers I, jaws F, elongated catch L M, lever T, bar V, and lugs U, when constrncted, combined, and arranged as described.
Witnesses: JAMES RILEY.
