Description

UNITED STATES PATENT OEEIcE.
WILLIAM E. BAnLoW, oF MoNMoUTH, ILLINOIS, ASsIGNoR To HIMSELF, JAMES Bowen, AND W. A. JACKSON, oF SAME PLAGE.
IMPROVED CAR-COUPLING.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. x71,95 l, dated December 10, 1867.
YTo all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, WILLIAM F. BARLOW, of the city of Monmouth, county of Warren, and State of Illinois, haveinvented a new Machine for Coupling Railroad-Gars; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description of the same, its construction, and operation, reference being had to the annexed drawings, making a part i of this specification, in which- Figure 1 is a perspective View of the coupling and end of car. Fig. 2is a sectional View from the top, ,and Fig. 3 a side sectional View.
The draw-head or bumper I construct on the usual plan, with the projections E E, in which to secure the link with an ordinary pin. In case of breaking the inside gear at the top of bumper, I raise the lips B and slot, in which I ,pivot the hook C for catching the link inside, and pivoted in front I place the weight X, Figs. 2 and 3,' for the purpose of holding the link at all times, When the cars are detached, in ahorizontal position. The slot in the bottom of bumper, the slot above, and the hook are so arranged that the strain in pulling comes on the shoulders and relieves the pivot-pin, the catch C being shaped so in front that when it is struck with the link it will rise and let it pass,.immediately falling and securing it, thus making it a self-coupling arrangement, and enabling the cars thus to be coupled without the intervention of hands'.
For the purpose of nncoupling without the danger arising from having-to go between the cars to lift the pin, I provide the bar or rod H, hooked at thelower end to the catch G and at the upper end to the rod N, which passes to the top of the car V, and by pulling at that point will lift thehook and release thelink. I further provide the rod M, passing to the side of the ear, for the same purpose. This rod I hook to the elbow K, 'pivoted at the angle to the side of the car, and hooked at the other end to the rod N, so that when therod M is pulled at Zit will also raise the catch-hook O.
Simplicity, strength, convenience, and saving life are the essential features of my invention.
What I claim as my invention, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
1. The catch C, slotted draw-head A, and Weight X, combined as described, and for the purpose set forth.
2. The rods M, N, and H and elbowKco1n bined as described, and operating in combination with the elements of the first claim, arranged substantially as described, and for the purpose set forth.
3. The weight X, arranged as described, for the purpose set forth.
WILLIAM F. BARLOW.
