Description

MMW-
atwtlflre www EDl/VARD L. GILMAN AND THEOPHILUS SMITH, OF SGB/[ER- VlLLll MASSACHUSETTS.
Letters Pat-ent No. 83,955, dated November 10, 1868.
POCKET TOBACCO-CUTTER The Schedule reerredto in these Letters Patent and making part of the same.
To all Awhom 'it 'may concern.-
Be it knoivn that We, EDWARD L. Guerin: and THEOPHILUS SMrrn, of Somerville, in the county of Middlesex, and` State of Massacl'iusetts, have invented a new and improved Pocket Tobacco-Gutter; and We do hereby declare that' the following is a full, clear, and exact description thereof, which will enable those skilled inthe art to make and use the same, reference bcinghad to the accompanying drawings, forining part of this specication.
The object of this invention is to fro-vide a convenient pocket-machine for the use of tobacco-smokers, whereby they may out their tobacco Without resorting Yto their pocketpknives for that purpose, and, in combination therewith, a match-box.
And the invention consists in arranging a sliding knife or cutter in properly-constructed box, as will hereinafter bev more fully described. v v
Figure l represents an outside view of a tobaccocutter constructed according to our invention.
Figure 2 is a vertical section of the same, tlirough the' line x v.
Similar letters of reference indicate corresponding parts. l
A is a box, forned of sheet-1netal or other suitable material.
This box has a cap or cover, B, which slips on to the top, as seen in the drawing, and also an adjustable tray, C, which ishinged to the other end ofthe box, so that it can be placed up on to the box, as seen in the red lines i-n lig. 2.
D represents the cutter or' knife, which is worked up and down in grooves in the box by the rods e e, which are attached to it. These rods are seen in dotted lines in g. 1 as attached to the cutter. They pass through the cover B, and are united at their top ends by a bar or cap, F, which serves as a thumb-piece in operating or cutting` With the machine.
The machine is held and operated by one hand, and the cutter is forced down and does its Work by the pressure of the thumb on the cap, F. To raise the cutter after being thus forced down, there are spiral springs, y g, around the rods, which bear against the cover B and the cap F, the recoil of which springs forces the cutter up as the prcssureon the cap, F ceases. Other than spiral springs may' be used for this purpose, if desired.
I is the bottom ofthe box. Above the bottom, through the box, at right angles with the edge of the cutter, as seen at K, there is a clear passage-Way for the introduction of the tobacco to be cut, and for its discharge when cut.
J represents a match-b x within the box A.
The machine is held in the palm of the hand, and the tobacco is introduced and pushed towards the cutter, in the direction of the arrow. By removing the cover of the box, the cutting-knife can be taken out for sharpening, or other purposes.
We claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent A. tobacco-cutter, constructed and operating substantially as shown and described, that is to say, with the knife D, the rods e, springs y, cap, F, and tray C, in combination with the box A, and either with or Without the match-box J. f
