UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
vHANDLE FOR CRossouT-sAws.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Dec. 18, 1906.
Application filed October 5, 1906. Serial No. 337.572.
To all whom, t may concern:
Be it known that I, GEORGE WV. Doxsin, a citizen of the United States, residing at Cadillac, in the county of Wexford and State of Michigan, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Handles for Crosscut- Saws; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
The object of this invention is to provide a simply-constructed yet very strong, durable, and thoroughly practicable handle adapted to withstand the knocks and blows of hard usage without liability of the continual Abreakage that is experienced with the ordinary saw-handles in lumber camps and elsewhere.
To this end the invention consists in the improved device substantially as herein shown and described, and pointed out in the appended claim, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, which form a part of this specification.
Figure l of said drawings is an exterior view or elevation; and Fig. 2 is a central longitudinal section of the said device, both views representing the usual slotted saw-bolt secured in the handle.
As shown in the drawings, my improved handle a is a single or integral round, hollow,
or tubular bar, of aluminium or other suitable metal, preferably aluminium, and having thick solid walls, making a light and yet strong rigid handle with a smooth exterior finish easy to the hands in manipulating the crosscut-saw. At its top the handle is made with a hollow knob or spherical formation b, exteriorly corrugated, affording an effective grip for screwing the handle to the threaded saw-bolt d. At its foot the handle is made with an enlarged or swell-like strengthening -and reinforcing base c, having a lat bottom to bear properly upon, the back of the sawblade. The lower portion of the bore of the handle, including the enlarged base c, is interiorly screw-threaded to engage the threaded portion of the slotted saw-bolt d, it being understood that the handle screws onto said bolt, and thereby clamps the end ofthe sawblade, which is fitted in the slot of said bolt ,in the usual way. The handle as thus simply constructed, besides being serviceable and convenient, is very strong, solid, and durable and will not break under the rough wear and usage to which such devices are subjected, and there are no separate parts or fastenings to work loose or break apart.
I claim- As an improved article, a metal handle fo crosscut-saws consisting of an integral round, hollow or tubular rod, having thick solid walls, formed at its top with a hollow knob exteriorly corrugated, and formed at its foot with thicker walls making a aring or swelllike enlarged base, the lower portion of the bore of said handle being interiorly screwthreaded to engage the threaded portion of a slotted saw-bolt, substantially as described.
In testimony whereof I anix my signature in presence of two witnesses.
GEORGE W. DOXSIE. Witnesses:
