V UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
GEORGE OBERBEOK, OF NEW YORK, N. Y., ASSI GNOR TO EAGLE PENCIL COMPANY, OF NEVV YORK, N. Y.
Specification of Letters Patent.A
Patented Dec. 11, 1906.
Application filed Septemberxfi, 1906. Serial No. 333.503.
To [bZZ 'LI/hum it may concern:
Be it known that I, GEORGE OBERBECK, a citizengofthe United States, residing atNew York, county of New York, State of New York, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Pencil-Sharpeners, of which the following is a specification.
This invention has to do with the means for permitting the operator to conveniently hold the sharpener when in use and to steady and center the pencil. Its object is to furnish a cheap and effective device for this purpose susceptible of application and use in connectionwith the ordinary hand pencil-sharpener, and it can best be explained and understood by reference to the accompanying drawings, in whichm Figure 1 is a perspective view of a pencilsharpener provided with my improved device. Fig. 2 is a cross-section of the same on line 2 2, Fig. 1. Figs. 3 and 4 are views ofa modification. Fig. 3 is a view of the developed blank, and Fig. 4 is a view of the completed device made from the blank.
A is the pencil-sharpener of usual construction. Upon the cylindrical portion of the body of the sharpener (which is at the end of the sharpener entered by the pencil) is mounted and secured my improved device. This device is made from a sheet-metal blank, which is cut out, bent, and fashioned to form the tubular portion a, which fits snugly around and is suitably secured to the cylindrical portion of the sharpener-body, the handle b consisting of the two extremities of the blank which are brought and fastened together flatwise, so as to forma fin-like handle which projects radially from and longitudinally of the i body of the sharpener, and the spring-yielding centering portion consisting of strips or arms c, projecting in advance of the mouth of the sharpener, so that the pencil must pass between them before entering the sharpener. These arms or strips sustain the pencil in position, center it, and prevent it from lateral wabbling, and they are sprmg-yielding, so as to adapt themselves to the varying sizes of pencils. The tubular portion a is secured to the sharpener in this instance by punching it into the body of the sharpener, as indicated at d. The two end portions which form the handle I) may be secured together by suitable means. In Figs. 1 and 2 a rivet e is used for the purpose. In Figs. 3 and 4 one end 4portion of the blank is formed with a tongue f, which when the blank is bent up and fashioned into the shape of the completed device is lapped over and upon the adj acent end portion through an opening formed for that purpose in the latter, as indicated in Fig. 4.
Having described :my invention, I claim- A pencil-sharpener provided with a holding and centering device consisting of a sheetmetal blank whose central portion is fashioned to form the tubular portion a and the spring-yielding centering portion c, and whose ends are brought and secured flatwise together to form the handle b, as and for the purposes hereinbefore set forth.
In testimony whereof I affiX my signature in presence of two witnesses.
GEORGE OBERBECK.
