To all whom it may concern.-

Be it known that I, CARLJ. EKBERG, a subject of the King of Sweden, and a resident of San Francisco, in the county of San Francisco and State of California, have invented a new and Improved Combined Needle and Thread Case, of which the following is a full, clear, and exact description.

My invention relates to cases, and more particularly to those adapted to hold a needle and thread for traveling and like use.

It consists of various features and combinations hereinafter described and more particularly claimed.

Reference is to be had to the accompanying drawings, forming a part of this specification, in which similar characters of reference indicate corresponding parts in all the views.

Figurel is a perspective view of one embodiment of my invention. Fig. 2. is a central longitudinal section therethrough. Figs. 3 and 4 are transverse sections on the lines 3 3 and 4 4, respectively, of Fig. 2; and Fig. 5 is an enlarged front elevation of one end of the case.

1O designates a back plate or support having opposite end walls 11 and 12. Hinged at 13 upon the outer extremity of the wall 11 is a cover 1 1, having side walls 15 15, which when the cover is closed come into proximity with the side edges of the support and complete the closure of the case.

Within the case, extending longitudinally at the center of the support between its ends, is a needle-holder which may include opposite retaining-walls 16 16, between which is a space of sufficient width to receive a needle. Pivoted upon the walls at 17 and being movable between them is an arm or pressure member 18, having near its outer end, or that farthest removed from the pivot, a rounded contact portion 19. The arm 18 is retained in contact with the support by a spring 20, fixed at one extremity in a socket 21, fastened between the walls 16 near the pivot of the arm 18 and engaging said arm at its opposite end. This outer portion of the arm is widened at 22 to permit the securing of the spring and for a purpose which will hereinafter be stated.

Through the end wall 12 of the case adj acent to 1ts juncture with the support and leading between the walls 16 is an opening 23 to receive a needle N. The portion 22 of the arm is divided at 24 and expanded to form a guide member or funnel 25, the reduced end of which comes opposite a portion of the opening 23, lying in the support. From the portion 22 of the arm are projections 26, extending through an opening in the wall 12 and furnishing means by which the arm may be swung from the support to release the needle. In the walls 16 adjacent to the end wall 11 are longitudinally-extending alined slots 27 27, Which receive a slide or projecting member 28, movable at each side of the walls 16 and having a finger piece 29 extending across the spring to facilitate engagement by the user.

Hinged at 30 at each of the side edges of the support are reels 31, upon which thread (indicated at T) may be wound. In the outer edge of each of the reels is shown slot 32 to secure the end of the thread. The reels in the closed position of the case rest against the walls 16 of the needle-holder, they diverging therefrom to their hinges. When the case is in use, they may be swung outwardly beyond the junctures of the support and cover.

The needle may be inserted in the holder by swinging out the arm 18 against the tension of its spring, thus leaving a free space between the support and the contact portion 19, permitting the point of the needle to be dropped through the opening 23. Having thus described my invention, I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent 1. A case comprising a support, a needleholder mounted at the center of the support, a reel hinged at each side of the support and opening outwardly therefrom, and a cover for the case. 2. A case comprising a support having end walls,'reels hinged upon the edges of the support and being movable between the end walls, and a cover hinged upon one of the end walls and serving to complete the closure of the case.

3. A case comprising a support having end walls, reels hinged upon the edges of the sup- ,port and being movable between the end walls, a cover hinged upon one of the end walls and serving to complete the closure of the case, and a needle-holder mounted upon the11 support and opening through an end wa 4. The combination with a case, of opposite needle-retaining walls carried thereby and having alined slots, a needle-projecting member movable in the slots, and a pressure member movable between the walls.
