Be it known that I, GEORGE H. HODGSON, a citizen of the United States of America, residing at Pittsburg, in the county of Allegheny and State of Pennsylvania, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Salt and Pepper Shakers, of which the fol lowing is a specification, reference being had therein to the accompanying drawings.

This invention relates to certain new and useful improvements in condiment-holders; and the invention has for its primary object to provide a holder for pepper and salt and novel means for controlling the exit of said salt and pepper.

Another object of this invention is to provide a neat and attractive condiment-holder which can be readily used in lieu of the two separate articles heretofore employed for containing pepper and salt.

In connection with my improved condiment-holder I employ easily -manipulated means for controlling the exit of the pepper and salt, whereby either condiment may be separately removed from the holder, or both condiments may be simultaneously used, as desired.

The above construction, together withthe details entering into my invention, will be hereinafter more fully described and claimed, and, referring to the drawings accompanying this application, like numerals of reference designate corresponding parts throughout the several views, in which- Figure 1 is a perspective view of my improved condiment-holder. Fig. 2 is a top plan view of the same. Fig. 3 is a vertical transverse sectional view taken on a median line, and Fig. 4is a vertical longitudinal sectional view of the same.

In constructing a condiment-holder in accordance with my invention the body thereof may be made of porcelain, glass, metal, or any suitable material.

The holder consists of a body portion 1, provided with a central partition 4, thus forming two compartments or cells 2 and 3, respectively.

The reference- numerals 5 and 6 indicate contracted necks formed on the body for the compartments or cells 2 and 3, respectively. These necks are exteriorly screw-threaded and have mounted thereon perforated caps 7 and 8, respectively.

The necks 5 and 6 as will be observed, project above the main body, and in the space the lid or closure between said necks there is secured on the body a plate 9, held by screws 10 or other suitable fastening means. The plate is provided at its ends with upwardly-extending pierced arms 11, in which is journaled a shaft 12, provided on one end with a suitable operating knob or handle 15. Intermediate its ends the said shaft 12 is bent to form a crank 12, to which is attached alid or closuredisk 14. The arms 11 of the plate 9 support a hood 11 slotted in its top to allow the throw or movement given to crank 12 when shaft 12 is turned by means of'the knob 15. The hood or closure-disk 14 is adapted to lie normally upon one or the other of the perforated caps 7 and 8 and may be provided with a peripheral flange 16 on each side, as shown, so as to neatly fit with both of said ca s.

To normally maintain the lid or closuredisk 14 in engagement with one of said caps, a coil-spring 17 has one end thereof attached to the crank 12, as at 18, and its other end attached to the plate 9, as at 19.

As shown in Fig. 4 of the drawings, the lid or closure-disk is in engagement with the cap 7, in which position it is held by the spring 17, and when the condiment-holder is inverted the condiment in compartment or cell 3 will pass out through the perforated If it be desired to obtain condiment from the compartment or cell 2, the shaft 12 is turned by means of its knob 15, imparting throw or movement to the crank 12, so as to move or throw the lid or closure-disk 14 over into engagement with perforated cap 8, thus uncovering perforated cap 7, the spring 17 by reason of its being attached to the crank 12 being moved to such position as to hold 14 in engagement with perforated cap 8 until reverse movement is imparted to shaft 12.

One or the other of the compartments is consequently always uncovered except for its perforated cap, while similarly one or the other of the compartments or cells is always closed by the lid or closure-disk 14.

What I claim, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, 1s-

1. A icondiment-holder consisting of a body portion having two compartments formed therein, the top of said holder having contracted neck portions forming exits for said compartments, perforated caps carried by said neck portions, a plate carried on the ITO top of said holder and having upwardlyeXtending arms, a slotted hood supported by said arms, a shaft journaled in said arms and bent intermediate its ends to from a crank contained within said hood, a stem extending from said crank out through the slot in said hood, a lid or closure-disk carried by said stern and normally engaging one of said caps, and a spring connected at one end to said crank and at the other end to said platefor holding said cap in normal position.

2. A condiment-holder consisting of a body portion having two compartments formed therein, and havinga neck portion for each compartment, perforated caps secured on in the presence of two witnesses.
