IMPROVEMENT IN PLows.
The Schedule referred to in these Letters Patent and making part: cf the same.
To all who/m it may concern vented a new andimproved Plow; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description thereof, which will enable others skilled in the` art to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, forming part of this speciiioation, in which- Figurel is a side 'view of my invention.
Figure 2 is a transverse vertical section of the same taken in the line x :11, fig. 1.
Similar letters of reference indicate like parts.
This invention relates to a new and-improved plow of that class which are-more especially designed for breaking up new ground, and are commonly termed breaking-plows. f
The invention consists in the method of securing the rods which form the mould-board of the plow, to the handles, whereby greater strength and durability are obtained' than in Ythose plows of the same class as at present constructed.- I
In the accompanying sheet of drawings,
A represents the beam of the plow;
B B,.the handles;
O, the standard; and
D, the landside. l
These parts may be constructedin the usual way, and therefore do not require a special description.
To the frontend of the landside D there is attached, at an acute angle, a plate, E, slightly inclined transversely, and extending backward a trifle past the standard C. To the upper surface of this plate the share F is secured by bolts a.
G represents a series of rods,the front ends of which p are tted in theplate E at its inner edge, and the rear ends of these rods have bolts b passing through them, the ends of the bolts being firmly .secured in the rods. The bolts b pass through stirrups H, which are fitted on the handle B, at the right-hand side of the plow, and
secured in position by set screws c, the inner ends of which are in contact with the rear edge ofthe handle. The bolts b also pass through the handle, an'd it will be seen that by screwing up the screws c, apressure of the stirrups against the bolts will be obtained, and the bolts, and consequently the rods G, iirrnly retained in position.
The rods G, it will be seen, perform in a certain degree the function of a mould-board,- as they throw off" sods and clods of earth from the furrow. They are far superior to a mould-board for a breaking-plow, as they materially reduce the draught of the plow.v
These rods Gare not new, in themselves considered, but they have hitherto been secured at their rear ends to the handle by nuts which are liable to work oii' and in case of the adjustment of the rods, or the afiixing of anew rod in the place of a broken one, considerable difficulty is experienced.
By my arrangement of the stirrups, the rods may be easily detached and applied.
By having the share F bolted to the top of the plate l E, a very rm attachment of the share is obtained.
Having thus described my invention, I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patentl The securing of the rods G to the handle B, by means of bolts b and stirrups H, substantially as shown and described.
