COMBINED CURB AND GUTTER APPLICATION FILED 110115, 1905.
BENJAMIN H. STURMAN, OF POTTSVILLE, PENNSYLVANIA.
COMBINED CURB AND GUTTER.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Nov. 27, 1906.
application filed November 15,1905- Serial No. 287,525.
To all whom it nmjl/ :nnccrw:
Be it known that I, BENJAMIN H. STUR- MAN, a citizen of the United States, residing at Pottsville, in the county of Sphuylkill and State of Pennsylvania, have invented certain new and useful- Improvements in a Combined Curb and Gutter, bf which the following is a specification, reference being had therein to the accompanying.drawings.
My invention relates to combined curbs and gutters, and more particularly to those constructed of plastic compositionssuch as cement, concrete, and the likeone of the objects being to provide a device of the character described that shall be simple and inexpensive in construction, easily molded, durable, and which is readily adapted for use with any of the ordinary constructions of street on curb and which. will havethe effect of augmenting or strengthening a curb already set where it is desirable to place a gut ter adjacent to a curb.
A further object is to provide an integrally.
formed curb and gutter that shall be so constructed as to overcome the effects of frost or heat upon. the earth beneath the street or pavement, and thereby prevent the displacement of sidewalks.
Other objects and advantages of my invention, as well as the structural features by means of which these objects are attained,
will'be made clear by an examination of the specification, taken in connectionwith the accompanying drawing, in whichthe same reference-numerals indicate corresponding pbrtions throughout, and in which is shown a sectional perspective of the combined curb and gutter.
{Referring to the drawing by numeral, 1 denotes a gutter composed of concrete, cement,
or the like and having formed integral therewith and depending at right angles from one edge thereof-a vertical wall 2, which operates as a curb and irost-resister. The gutter 1 comprises an oblong body having a uniform concave upper surface 3 and a flat base, which is adapted. to rest upon the earth. Abutting the edge of the gutter on one side is the street-paving 5, and abutting on the opposite side is the sidewalk 7.
The combined curb and gutter has formed upon its bottom and outer faces integral brackets or braces 8, which have the efi ect of bracing and reinforcing the entire structure,
so that when the device is in operative position between a sidewalk and street there Wlll be no danger of longitudinalor lateral displacement by reason of the action of frost or heat, the earth being packed in between the,
brackets or braces, operating to chetk any movement, particularly longitudinal. Moreover, it frequently occurs, particularly in large cities andv on streets where traffic is heavy, that loaded wagons and heavy vehicles wheel into the gutter, especially in loading and unloading the contents thereof, and the great difliculty heretofore experienced has been to prevent cement or concrete gutters from beconung cracked or broken, and it is for'the purpose of obviating the expense and inconvenience caused by this cracking or breakage that I employ the form of gutter,
shown.
Having thus described. my said invention,
what I claim as new, and desire to secure by 7 5 Letters Patent of the United States, is*
The herein-described combined curb and gutter formed of an integral body of plastic material and comprising a straight vertical wall of sufficient depth to extend below the frost -line, .a gutter-block formed integral with the wall upon one of its sides, said gutter-block pro ectmg at right angles from the .Wall at its top and extending longitudinally of the wall the top of said gutter-block being 8 5 Rush with the top of the wall and having formed therein a longitudinally-extending channel to provide a gutter, and transvcrselyextending brackets formed integral with the wall and the under side of the gutter-block go to reinforce and support the latter, substantially as shown and for the purposes set. forth.
In testimony whereof I hereunto affix iny signature in presence of two witnesses.
' J3ENJAMIN H. STURMAN.
