To all whom it may concern.-

Beit known that I, JAMES E. ScovILLE, of Syracuse, in the county of Onondaga, in the State of New York, have invented new' and useful Improvements in Card-Indexes, of which the following, taken in connection with the accompanying drawings, is a full, clear, and exact description.

This invention relates to the class ofjndexes which com Irise a holder or c ase in which is supporte a movable set of cards on which are written memoranda to be preserved for reference. f

The main object of the present invention is to produce a device of the character aforesaid, wherein the set of cards shall be normally concealed in the case and permitted to be moved inde endently to exposed position when re uire for reference, and also permitted to beindependently and conveniently removed from the case to permit the desired matter to be Written or printed thereon and readily replaced in the case. l

Another ob`ect of the invention is to provide means which shall operate to automatically restore the cards. to their normal positions. Furthermore, an object is tol produce a device which sh-all be simple,stron and durable in its construction, easily an conveniently mani ulated for the purpose aforesaid, and whic Shall be neat and compact and at the same time inexpensive in its manufacture. While the card-containmg caseor holder may be supported in any suitable manner, however it 1s more practically` designed to be a plied to a telephone instrument of either tliie so-called desk type or wall type`in which the transmitter is pivotally connected thereto, preferably the former. Therefore another object of this invention' is to provide simple' and effectual attaching means for the case when thus a plied.

To that end t e inventionconsists in the novel construction and arrangementof the component parts of the card-index, as hereinafter fully described, and set forth mlthe claim. y

A denotes the case, in which are supported the set of memorandum-cards a a. Said case is open at its top and one end and comprises a frontwall b,rear wall c, bottom d, and one'end wall e and is preferablyformed from the sheet-metal blank A', (shown in Fig. 8 of the drawings,) as hereinafter fully ex lained. B denotes the standard of the weliknown telephone instrument. which is adjustably mounted. on a screwthreaded horizontal shaft or pin f .at the upper end of the standard, which shaft is provided with the usual thumb-nut g for clam ing the transmitter in its position in the weilown manner. Said case A is formed with a'bracket h, by vwhich it is attached to the telephone. This bracket is rovided with a slot t, receiving the aforesai shaft or pin f 4and, is clam ed between the thumb-nut g and standar B, as clearl shown in Figs. l he bracket is also provided with an aperture y' to accommodate the thumb-nut, as clearly shown in Fig. 1.

The aforesaid memorandum-cards a a are each provided in the'bo'ttom ed e adjacent to one corner with a vertical slot by which slot the cards are pivotally connected to the pin k, whereby they can be tilted independently to exposed position and can be removed inde endently from the case when desired. the case A. These tabs serve as thumb-pieces vby which to tilt the cards to exposed position.

D represents a shelf which is pivotally supported on the projecting ends of the pin k. This shelf is normally in upright position against the outer end of the 'case A and is movable with the cards when the latter are tilted to exposed position, as indicated by dotted lines in Fig. 3 of the drawings. Said shelf serves as a support for the cards in said position and relieves the slotter corner portions of the cards from strain incident to such tilting. To the rear side of the shelf is rigidly fastened an arm or rod n, preferably formed with a hook or eye at its free end, to' which is attached one end of a spring or rubber band o, the other end of which band is connected to the case A, as indicated at o', and clearly shown in Figs. 2 and 3 of the drawings. This spring or band o serves to move the shelf to upright position when the cards are relieved, whereby said shelf automatically restores the cards to their normal position.

l prefer to provide the case A with an ade ditional card a2, disposed back of and eX- tending above the other cards and which may be used for various purposes, as clearly shown in Figs. 1 and 3 of the drawings. The said case may be constructed in any suitable manner. However, l prefer to form the same of the rectangular-shaped blank A', shown in'Fig. 8 of the drawings, and which may be composed of any suitable kind of sheet metal.

By bending the blank in this manner the sections 2 2 form the front wall and rear Wall, respectively, of the case, and the intermediate sec tion 3 forms the bottom thereof. nihe said side sections 2 2 are subdivided by nntrginal` dotted lines, (indicated at i 4,) thereby producing sections 5 5, one of which latter sections is formed with extensions 6.v By bending the blank on the lines i a at right angles flanges are produced which are lapped one upon the other and form the end wall. in striking up the blank slits 7 7 are made in one of the side sections arallel with and at the line Yi of folding. T 1e other side section 2 of the blank is provided with U-shaped incisions 8 8 for the purpose of bending therefrom tongues 9 9, which are inserted in the aforesaid slits 7 7 of the other section and clenched on the inner face df said section., as clearly shown in Figs. 6 and 7 of the drawings. The aforesaid extension 6 of the blank isA also bent on the dotted lines 10 11 and constitutes the. supporting-bracket h of the case.

The slot i of the extension e receives the shaft or pin f of the transmitter of the telen phone, and the aperture j thereof accommodates the thumb-nut g applied to said shaft.

Theinner end edge of the aforesaid shelf D is adapted to engage the outer end of the case when moved to its horizontal position to limit such movement, and thus forms a stop.

vWhat, l claim as my invention is in combination with a card-case, formed of a sin le sheet of metal and comprising front an rear walls, a sin le end wall, a bottom, and a slotted suph erung-bracket formed integral with the sai end wall and extending from said end wall and having its slotted end bent at right an les to the body of the bracket, of a pin fixe in the front and rear walls and extending beyond the outer surfaces of the same, a shelf pivotally supported on tbe projected ends of said pin, a spring connected to said shelf and a set of memorandum-cards nivotally mounted on said pin, each card being provided on its top edge with an index-tab, substantially as described.
