This invention relates to improvements in slip accounting devices of the type referred to in my Patent No. 2,140,207, dated December 13, 1938.
Among other objects, the present invention provides an invertible holder for the accounting slips so that both faces of the slips may be read and compared while at the same time a side guide is provided for the usual line guide.
The invention is also desirably inclusive of means for pivoting the side guide to the holder to swing in the plane of the holder, so that in one position the side guide is at right angles to the holder, and is advantageously releasably locked in such position merely by movement of the side guide to said position, while in its other extreme or closed position the side guide is coincident with the holder and is jack-knifed therein, minimizing the space occupied thereby and affording compactness and neatness of .assembly.

Referring in detail to the illustrative embodiment shown in the drawings, the mounting bar Ill carries along its length at uniformly spaced intervals the mounting posts ll upon which the series of ruled slips l2 are adapted to be mounted as by perforations I3 in the upper margins of the slips, the slips being arranged in shingled relation and accurately aligned by means of abutment M for the upper edges of the slips, all as more particularly described in my said patent. As here shown, the abutment M may be formed integrally with the bar [0, this being thus of angular formation. An upwardly offset longitudinally extending portion l5 of the bar 10 permits the posts H to be riveted on the under side of the bar, as at I la.
In accordance with the present invention, the
bar it] is carried by a holder of somewhat similar elongated shape .and formed of plates i6 and ii, these plates being somewhat in the nature of laminations spaced apart, for a purpose presently described, by suitable fillers at each end, and to which the laminations are each secured .as by spot-welding. It will be observed that the holder extends at the left beyond the mounting bar to provide a bearing for the side guide later described. One of these fillers between the laminations, and the only one which it is necessary to here describe, is in the form of a cylindrical boss l8 first secured to the lower member ll adjacent one end, in this instance the left-hand end thereof. Before the upper member I 6 is riveted to the boss 18, there is placed over the boss iii, the side guide l9 having the aperture 20 in which the boss 58 snugly fits, so as to form a bearing therewith. The boss is desirably spaced inwardly from the margins of the member ll so that the rear edge 2| of the side guide will remain within the perpendicular projection of the member I! and in abutment with a perpendicularly turned edge margin Ila of the member H, in any pivotal position of the side guide, as best shown in Fig. 2. As thus arranged, the side guide 19, which is desirably in the form of a strip of metal commonly known as Swedish steel, very flexible but strong, is pivoted to swing from what may be termed a closed position, that is, wholly received between the laminations l6 and H as shown in Fig. 4, to a position at right .angles thereto, as shown in Figs. 1, 2, 3 and 5. A cutout 22 in the upper lamination [5 provides a thumb-piece by which the side guide 19 may be grasped to withdraw it from the closed or jackknifed position to the open position. In open position the guide strip [9 is entirely to one'side of the slips l2.
Before the side guide strip i9 is placed in po- 1 sition as just described, it is desirably given a downward bend as at 23 so as to have its outer end biased toward the lower lamination 51. Thus in closed and partially open position the guide strip presses frictionally against a block 24 carried by the member I! adjacent the boss I8. In full open position, however, as best shown in Figs. 1, 2 and 3, the guide strip clears this block and snaps into abutment with the edge 25 of the block ,to .yieldingly retain the guide strip in position perpendicular to the bar [0. Since the perforation 20 is offset from the center line of the strip, the strip can rotate from right-angular to closed position, that is, within an arc of 90 degrees, but cannot swing to a greater angle than this by reason of the aforesaid abutment of the edge 2| of the strip with the wall lla. When it is desired to close the guide strip, it may be manually swung out of abutment with the edge 25 of the block 24 and onto this block, and then jack knifed with the holder.
As more particularly referred to in my said patent, the device desirably includes a cover Illa for the mounting bar including a channel member having channel walls 26 and 21, which telescope over the posts I i. In this instance the cover is hinged to a perpendicularly turned up margin 28 of the upper lamination l6, which overlaps and is riveted to the wall Ila of the lower lamination. Aligned hinge knuckles 29 and 39 alternating on the parts la and 28 respectively receive a hinge pin 3! for the cover. Suitable locking means, for example such as described in my said patent, may be employed to releasab-ly lock the cover in closed position indicated in Figs. 1, 4 and hereof.
As best shown in Fig. 1, the side guide l9 provides a combined support and guide for the linefinder 32 which is also desirably formed of a strip of so-called Swedish steel. A clip-head 33, to which the line-finder 32 is attached, permits the line-finder to be moved up and down on the side guide l9, its straight edges 34 being thus adapted to be aligned with the ruled lines 35 of the slips [2.
The clip-head 33 has a base 35 which is elongated transversely of the holder and between which and the flexible strip 32 the side strip i9 is received. An upturned edge 3'1! on the base 35, when abutted with the edge of the side guide, maintains the side guide and line guide perpendicular one to the other, and so that a straight edge 34 of the line finder is parallel with the lines 35. A leaf spring 38, controlled by the thumbpiece 39, is biased to hold the side guide and linefinder frictionally together, but may be released to vary their relative positions, depending upon the particular line 35 with which it is desired to have the edge of the line-finder coincident. It will be understood that the line-finder thus indicates the equivalent line 35 on each of the slips l2 cross-wise of the slips, so that an addition, for example, may be readily made of comparative figures on the respective slips.
If it is desired to examine the data on the opposite, or here concealed, faces of the slips l2, the line-finder may be removed from the side guide l9 and the entire device turned over or inverted without disturbing the slips [2. Thereupon the under faces of the slips will be in View, with the side guide l9 at the right hand side of the slips instead of at the left-hand, as here shown. Thereupon, the line finder may be restored to slidable relation with the side guide l9, the only difference being that the right-hand instead of the left-hand of the operator will be used to manipulate the line-finder.
In order to avoid marring a desk-top or the like upon which the device may be used, and also to minimize slippage thereon, I have shown the holder supported by a plurality of rubber feet 40. As best shown in Fig. 5, these are desirably in the form of gum-rubber hollow rivets which are passed through holes ll in brackets 42 having flanged ends 43 which are riveted to the outer face of the lower lamination l! of the holder. These rubber feet function therefore somewhat as suction cups. So that the holder may be similarly supported when turned over or reversed as described, the cover Illa may also carry similar feet 40. In this instance the cover itself may be apertured to pass the feet Ml therethrough, instead of mounting the feet in brackets as on the holder.
By reason of the nature of the side guide here disclosed, it is flexible in one direction to accommodate itself to the plane of the slips l2, while it remains rigidly right-angular with respect to the holder so as to effect with the line-finder a T- square function for the latter. At the same time, the side guide permits an unobstructed View of either face of the slips and the device is readily invertible without changing the relationship of the slips or of any of the parts except the line guide. In either open position the holder remains at the top, that is in the same relative position to the slips 42 to the eye of the user.
The invention is not limited to details of construction shown for purposes of illustration. Such changes may be made as fall within the scope of the following claims without departing from the invention.
Having described my invention, I claim:
1. In a device of the class described, the combination of a bar-like holder, means for removably attaching a plurality of overlapping slips to said holder by perforations in shingled ends of the slips, and a side guide member pivoted to said holder at one end thereof to swing in the plane thereof, said side guide member being of flexible metallic material and adapted to accommodate itself to the plane of said slips under the influence of a line finder adapted to be carried by said side guide member when disposed on said side guide member and said slips.
2. The structure of claim 1 wherein the said side guide member is of spring steel and is biassed slightly out of the. plane of said holder, whereby to engage a stop on said holder when swung into extreme open position to releasably maintain the holder and side guide member in right-angular relationship.
3. The structure of claim 1 wherein the holder is formed of laminations and the side guide is pivotally clamped between said laminations.
4. The structure of claim 1 wherein the holder is provided with a cover hinged thereto and both holder and cover are provided with rubber cushion feet, whereby the holder is invertible.
5. The structure of claim 1 wherein the holder is formed of laminations and the side guide is pivotally clamped between said laminations and whereby the side guide is circularly apertured adjacent one end and the laminations carry between them a cylindrical boss which passes through the said aperture as a pivot bearing.
6. A slip accounting device or the like comprising a relatively narrow invertible holder, a side guide pivoted thereto to swing in the plane of the holder from a closed position coincident with same to an open position at right angles thereto, whereby the holder may be inverted and the side guide may carry a line guide in open position of the holder either at the right or left side thereof, and a cover for the holder whereby the entire device describes an unobstructed right angle in'either right or left hand position with 7. The structure of claim 6 wherein the side guide is arranged to be jack-knifed with the holder.
8. The structure of claim 6 wherein. the holder and cover are provided with cushion members operative in either holder position.
9. A slip accounting device or the like comprising a series of slips, a relatively narrow elongated holder mounting the series of slips in shingled relation by means engaging the slips along one margin, and a relatively narrow line finder side guide attached to the holder at one end thereof parallel with the slips but outside of the perpendicular projection of the slips Whereby the holder with the slips thereon and the side guide may be placed in either normal or inverted position to expose either face of the slips while in either position the side guide permits the use of a line finder or the like with the corresponding face of the slips.
10. In a device of the class described, the combination of right-angularly related mounting and line-finder side guide means, all adapted to be unitarily invertible with the side guide at either the left-hand or right-hand end of the mounting means while the mounting means remains at the top, and. a separable line finder right-angularly engageable with the side guide in either of said positions.
