To all whom it may concern:

Be it known that I, EvERETT DE FOREST HOLT, a citizen of the United States, and a resident of Morristown, in the county of Morris and State of New Jersey, have invented a new and Improved Copy-Holder, of Vwhich the following is a full, clear, and exact description.

The invention is an improvement in copyholders, and has for one of its objects, among others, to provide a new and improved device of this character more especially designed to be used by school children as a means to improve their writing.

Another object is to so construct the copyholder that it may be eiiectively used in connection with an ordinary form of school copy-book or may be so interchanged that a sheet of paper can be inserted and the device operated in the reverse direction to accomplish the same result.

Generally stated, the copy-holder consists of rollers journaled in standards between which the copy is passed and carries at one end a cover-plate to obscure the writing on the pad or copy-book. One of these rollers is adapted to be interchanged and an attachment brought into operation which will hold the copy stationary and permit the work to move between the rollers in the opposite direction from which the copy did in the first instance,

Reference is to be had to the accompanying drawings, forming a part of this specification, in which similar characters of reference indicate corresponding parts in all the iigures.

Figure 1 is a transverse section of one embodiment of my invention on the line 1 1 of Fig. 2. Fig. 2 is a Jfront end elevation of the same. Fig. 3 is a plan view'oi the same. Fig. 4 is a transverse section similar to Fig. l, but with the lower roller and supportingplate occupying a different relation and a copy-holding attachment in operative position, and Fig. 5 is a perspective view of a cover-plate for obscuring the work.

The numeral 1 indicates a base, of cast-iron or other suitable material, of substantially U shape and having a corrugated rubber mat 2 secured to its under face and standards 3 preferably integral with the base and projecting upwardly therefrom, said standards having flanged slots 4 and 5 in one edge and a similar slot 6, and inclined slots 7 and 8 at each side thereof in the opposite edge. xed at its center and a ratchet-wheel 12 at one side thereof, said spindle being extended at one end for carrying a milled wheel 13, by which the roller may be turned in its bearings. Y

Cooperating with the ratchet-wheel 12 is a roller 13a, journaled in the upper end of a iieXible standard 14, secured to the base 1 by means of bolts 14, said roller engaging the depressions between the teeth of the ratchetwheel and adapted to be projected out of and into the same as the milled Wheel 13 is turned.

Journaled in the flanged slots 5 is a spindle 16 similar to the spindle 9 and carrying a small roller 17, made up of a suitable number of sections, as shown in Fig. 2, and bearing against the roller 10, both of which are provided with rubber coverings 17 a and 10a, respectively, in order that a good contact may be had between them.

In the slot 8 is slidably mounted a supporting-plate 18, and at theoppositev side of the 'standards 3 a cover-plate 19, having an inturned edge 20 and downturned ends 21 in order that it may slide on a desk or table on which the base 2 is supported.

In operating the copy-holder thus described a sheet of paper 22, having printed thereon a copy, is passed between the rollers and engaged in the inturned edge 20 of the' cover-plate when the latter is placed contiguous to the base 2 and a copy-book or pad 23, so positioned that its top edge shall be in alinement with the outer edge of the coverplate. The scholar now proceeds to write on the copy-book or pad the copy given on the sheet. When the first line is completed, the roller 10 is turned by the wheel 13 one notch of the ratchet-wheel, which slides the coverplate 19 over the writing on the copy-book or pad and prevents the scholar from copying his own writing and requiring reference to the copy generally placed at the head of the sheet.

In Fig. 4 is shown an attachment adapted to fold into the cut-out portion of the base, said attachment consisting of links 24 and 25 at each side, pivoted together and respectively to the edges of the base and to projecting lugs from the under face of a copy-holding plate 26, said copy-holding plate being curled over its outer edge for preventing a ICO IIO

I have shown the rollers secured in their Y bearings by cotter-pins passing through the flanges of the slots, which permits their ready removal from the standards when desired.

It is evident that various changes in the details of construction can be made without departing from the spirit of my invention, and I desire to have it understood that I am entitled to` such modifications as fall within the scope of the invention as claimed.

Having thus described my invention, I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent- 1. A copy-holder comprising a base, standards iXed thereto, rollers journaled in the standards, rubber coverings on the rollers, a supporting-plate at one side of the rollers, a cover-plate at the opposite side, a sheet of material connected to the cover-plate and passed between the rollers, and a ratchet mechanism for advancing the sheet and cover-plate step by step, for the purpose specified.

2. A copy-holder comprising a base, standards fixed thereto, a large and a small roller j ournaled in the standards, rubber coverings on both of said rollers, a supporting-plate at one side of the rollers, a cover-plate at the opposite side, a sheet of material connected to the cover-plate and passed between the rollers, and a ratchet mechanism for advancing the sheet and cover-plate step by step, for the purpose specified. i'

3. A copy-holder comprising a U-shaped base, standards fixed thereto, a large roller journaled in the standards, a small interchangeable roller journaled in the standards contacting with the large roller, an interchangeable supporting-plate fixed to the standards at one side thereof, a copy-holder pivoted at the opposite side and adapted to fold into the cut-away portion of the base, and a ratchet mechanism to advance a sheet of paper step by step between the rollers, for the purpose specified.

4. The combination of a copy, a cover carried thereby, and means for advancing the copy step by step, for the purpose specified.

5. The combination of a sheet of paper, a copy thereon, a cover carried thereby, and means for advancing the copy and cover, for the purpose specified.

6. The combination of a sheet of paper, a copy thereon, a cover-plate carried thereby, and rollers for advancing the copy and cover, for the purpose specified.

7. The combination of a sheet of paper, a copy thereon, a cover-plate carried thereby, rollers for advancing the copy and cover, and means for turning the rollers step by step, for the purpose specified.

8. rIhe combination of a base, standards at each side thereof, flanged slots at one edge of each standard, a iianged slot at the opposite edge of each standard, rollers journaled in the flanged slots at one edge of the standards, one of said rollers adapted to be interchanged into the flanged slots at the opposite edge, and means for operating said rollers.

9. The combination of a base, standards at each side thereof, a large roller journaled in the standards, a smaller interchangeable roller journaled in the standards, adapted to contact with the large roller, rubber coverings over said rollers, a supportingplate interchangeably fixed to the standards, a ratchet mechanism carried at one side of the larger roller, and means for operating said roller.
