Application filed June 15, 1906. Serial No; 321,918.
Youngstown, in the county-of Mahoning and State of Ohio, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in, a Combined Tooth- Brush and Holder, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to that type of" toilet articles wherein a tooth-brush. is com bined with a holder or holding-case to pro-1 vide a combi'nationdevice for holding, carry ins, and housin a tooth-brush.
130 this end t e invention contem lat es a simple and practical combined toot -brush and holder having means for folding the brush proper into a small compass and thoroughly housing the same when not in use, so
that it may be readily carried in the pocket I or otherwise, while at the same time being effectually protected from dust or contamination by other foreign substances.
Another object is to rovide a novel con-' struction of holder em odving means not only for housin the brush proper in its folded position, ut also serving to rigidly and firmly support the brush in its extended operative position. Furthermore, in carrying out this function the improved holder provides a substantial holder for the brush.
With these aiid other objects in view, which will more readily appear as the nature of the inventionvis better understood, the same consists in the novel construction, combination, and arrangement of parts hereinafter more fullydescribed, illustrated, and claimed r. I
The essential features of the invention involved in can'yingout the foregoing objects may be modified to some extent without departing from the scope of the invention but a preferred embodiment thereof is shown in the accompanying drawings, in which- F1 ure'l 1s a perspective viewof the combine tooth-brush and holder embodying the present invention. Fig. 2 is a plan. 'viewof the device, showing the holder thrown open and illustrating the brush proper in two po' sitions. Fig. 3 is ,a perspective view of the device folded and the brush housed within its holder. Fig. 4 is a detail sectional view on the line l 4 of'Fig. 8. Fig. 5; is a detail cross sectional viewon the line 5 5 of Fig. 3-.
Like references designate corresponding parts in the severalfigures of the drawings. The m'esant invention comprises two prin-.
drawin 'same essentially consisting -of- -the brush head 1 and thecarrying-shank 2, whifliiate ter is ordinarily .of sufiicient length to con-. stitute'the handle of the. brush. The pres I ent'invention contemplates shortening the" "carryin shank 2 and combining therewith the hol or H, which not only'constit-utes the main handle or grip of the brush, but also acts as a protective housing therefor when: notinuse. The holder H is of a sufiicient size toaccominodate the entirebrush B, including the, head 1 and the shank .2,l and consists of at box-casing 3 and aln'ng'ed cover member 4; The box-casing is provided with an im;- perforated bottom 5 and asurroun ange-wall. 6, provid' via boxof suflicintde th and size for the rushdproper; .butin 1 or er to preserve proper han e outlines and also to facilitate the holdingv of thGCQYerfQ; in its closed position'the side walls" ofthe' box-casing 3 are referably outwardlyb0wed1 or converged, as p ainly shown in of s. I Inad'dition to the detnfls'snmntionedftMf5" box-casing 3 is providedwi'tn a ta er'ed' end portion 7,terminatingin a-U-sha e holdingj clip 8, within which is ivotalYmouhtedf upon the pivot-pinor stu 9. one endpor'tion 96,
of the brush-carrying casing is preferably made of sheet metal, and i the cheeks of the holding-clip 8 are designed to snufly'fit the rabbeted faces 10 at the, pivote end .of the shank 2 ,and the ivot-pin or stud .9 projects beyond both si es of the clip 8 to form stop members engaged by the stopfotches 11, provided in op osite edges of t e tapered end portion 12 o .sthe hinged" 1 cover member' i. god The hinged cover member 4 is practically a com len ent of the b0X-casing'3'and'is likewise o a flanged formation. 'Also., said cover member terminates at the outer. e d-of its tapered portion 12 ina 'U-sha'p'ed holding- 7 clip '13,- ada ted tobverlap the clip 8,and 1 'whose side 0 eeks orwalls are of-a sufiicient Lil at this point the resilient cheeks of the clip 13 may be provided at their inner sides with catch projections 14, adapted to spring in and out cl keeper-openings 15 in the sides of the clip 8. This construction permits the catch projections 14; to directly engage the sides of the shank 2, and thereby materially assist holding the same rigid and fast in its extended position.
It is also preferable in carrying out the invention to hinge the cover 4 to one side wall of the casing 3, as at 16, below the edge of said wall and provide the cover at its opposite side with an extended springslip 17, adapted to project below the horizontal center of the casing and slidably engage over one of the outwardb -bowed side walls there of. This provides a elasping action "for hold ing the cover closed. and also renders the casing dust-proof.
From the foregoing it is thought that the construction, use, and advantages of the herein-described toilet article will be apparent Without further description.
1. in a device of the class described, a holder consisting of a fixed casing and a hinged cover member provided with complemental overlapping holdingclips having a resilient elasping action, and a brush proper having a carr ving-shanl pivotally mounted in the clip of the casing.
2. In a device of the class described a flanged box-casing provided at one end with tion provided with a U-shaped holding-clip having side keeper-openings, the brush having its shank pivotally mounted in said clip and a hinged cover member for the ca-sin 7 also having a tapered end portion provided with a U-shaped holding-clip overlapping that of the casing, and having resilient cheeks carrying catch projections engaging said keeper-openings and the sides of the brush- 7 shank.
4. In a device of the class described, a boxcasing having curved side walls, a cover member for the casing hinged to one side thereof, and provided at its free edge with an extended spring lip engaging over the curved side of the casing and projecting below the center of the holder to secure a clasping action, and Ya brush proper pivoted to the easing and foldable into and out of thesame.
In testimony whereof I-hereunto afiix my signature in the presence of two Witnesses. ROBERT W. MORGAN.
