WIRE-STRETCHER. A
Specification of Letters Patent. Application nea Jun@ 28,1905'. serrano. 267,369.

ing device in which the stretching-bar canl be quickly and easily disengaged whenever the stretching operation has been accomplished and the wire fastened.
With these and certain other objects in view, as will appear hereinafter, my invention consists in the novel features of construction, combination, and arrangement, alll of which will be fully described hereinafter and pointed out in the claims.
In the drawings forming a part of this specification, Figure l is a plan view of a wire-stretcher constructed in accordance with my invention. Fig. 2 is adetail view of the bar-holding mechanism. Fig. 3 is a face view of the pawl for holding the bar. Fig. 4 is an edge view of the same.
In carrying out my invention I employ a metal frame A, preferably made of wrought metal and comprising the member A', which practically constitutes the backbone of the frame, and projecting from each end of this member A are the arms A2, the. ends of whichare enlarged, as shown at A3, and provided with guide-openings through which passes the bar B.' A central arm C also projects from the ymernber A', substantially parallel with the arms A2, and this arm is also enlarged at its end and provided with a guide-opening tlirough'which the bar B asses. This arm, besides constituting a gui e-arm, also serves as a bearing for the holding-pawl, as more fully explained hereinafter.
The bar B has a wire-clamp D connected to its forward end, which clamp may beof any suitable construction and is adaptedl to clampthe wire E to be stretched. A gripping-pawl F works uponthe bar B between the arms A2 and C and is adapted to grip the said bar and move it rearwardly whenever saidpawl is given a rearward movement, and
l for the purpose of obtaining this rearward movement I employ a-lever G, pivoted -at Ur to the member A and connected to the end of the gripping-pawl by-means-of a link rl, which nts over the notched end of the lever. A spring l surrounds the bar B between the bearing-arm C and the grippingward position as soon as the pull upon the lever is released, thereby enabling the gripping-pawl to obtain a fresh grip upon the bar B. 1
A holding-pawl K is arranged upon the bar B between the middle arm C and rearward arm A2, and a spring L surrounds the bar and bears upon the said holding-pawl. An angled finger M is pivoted to the end of the pawl K and is adapted to bear against the middle arm C for the purpose of holding the pawl K in a proper position for gripping the arm B. and holding it against reverse movement while the gripping-pawl is obtaining a fresh grip upon said bar.
N indicates a chain connected to the frame and by means of which the said frame can be anchored or connected to the post or other rigid object, so that by working the lever back and forth the bar B will be moved step-by-step'in a rearward direction, thereby stretching the wire E.
pawl and serves to return said pawl to ns for- After the wire has been stretched and y fastened and it is desired to release the bar it can be quickly and easily accomplished by throwing the angled finger M out of engagement with the middle arm, and the holdingpawl will then release its grip upon the bar,
and the bar can be moved back to its initial position.
It will thus be seen that .Iprovide an exceedingly strong, simple, and efficient construction ofthe wire-stretcher.
Having thus fullydescribed my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
1. A wire-stretcher comprising a frame provided with guide and bearing arms, a bar working through said arms, a gripping-pawl arranged upon the bar, a spring surrounding said bar between said pawl and earing-arms, a holding-pawl arranged upon said bar, provided with a pivoted iinger, a spring surrounding said vbar between said holdingpawl and guide-arm and a lever pivoted to the frame connected to the gripping-pawl, for the purpose described.
2.'A wire-stretcher comprising a frame consisting of a member having guide and IOO IIO
spring bearing thereon, a lever pivoted to the back member of the frame and connected with the gripping-pawl, a holding-pawl arranged upon the bar and having a spring bearing thereon, and an angled inger pivotally connected to the holding-pawl and adapted to bear against the bearing-arms, for the purpose specified.
