WIRE-STRETCHER.
Specification of Letters Patent.

To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, ULYsrs G. SPERRY, a citizen of the United States, residing at Vernalis, in the county of San Joaquin and State of California, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Wire-Stretchers; and I do hereby declarethe following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, and to the letters and figures of reference marked thereon, which form a part of this specification.
This invention relates to new and useful improvements in wire stretchers, and the object of the invention is to produce a simple and efficient device of this nature which will be simple in construction and so arranged that the slack in wires will be readily taken up, and consists of a bar having a longitudinal slot and provided with jaws at the ends thereof, while intermediate the ends of said bar is a jaw carrying plate having lugs which are guided in the slots of the bar, means being provided for feeding said plate, whereby the wire may be drawn taut.
The invention is illustrated in the accompanying drawings, in which:
Figure 1 is a side elevation of the wire stretcher. Fig. 2 is a sectional view through the operating handle, Fig. 3 is a detail view of one of the jaws adapted to clamp and hold the wire, and Fig. 4 is a sectional view on line 44 of Fig. 3.
Reference now being had to the details of the drawings by letter, A designates a bar having a longitudinal slot B formed therein. The ends 0 of said bar are bent at right angles to the length thereof and their ends laterally bent as at D, forming a fixed jaw, each adapted to cooperate with a cam jaw E pivotally mounted upon said bar. It will be noted that the wire engaging jaw of each cam member has serrations or teeth F thereon, whereby a good grip may be secured upon the wire to be held.
H designates a plate having lugs H projecting therefrom and which pass through the slot of said bar, and said lugs have heads which engage the face of the bar along the marginal edges of the slot therein and serve to hold the plate to said bar as the latter is given an intermittent movement. The laterally projecting end K of said plate has a fixed jaw K, and L is a cam jaw fixed to said endK and is adapted to cooperate with the fixed jaw to securely hold and clamp the wire to be drawn taut.
N designates a lever which is pivotally connected to said plate, and N is a plate which is connected by rivets O to said lever, the lever being in contact with the outer face of said jaw carrying plate, while the plate N is held in contact with the outer face of said, slotted bar. Lugs R extend through the plate N and said lever and upon each of said lugs is pivotally mounted a pawl T, each of which pawls is acted upon by means of a spring S serving to normally hold said pawls in engagement with one or the other of the series of ratchet teeth Q formed upon the opposite longitudinal edges of said bar.
In operation, one end of the wire is clamped by the intermediate jaw and the other end of the wire to be stretched is gripped by the jaw upon the bar adjacent to said handle. This being done, said lever is moved backward and forward until the same is drawn as far as it will go towards the end of the bar, after which the wire held by the intermediate clamp is gripped by the jaws at the other end of the slotted bar. This being done, the intermediate jaw is released from the wire and the plate to which the lever is connected is moved back in order to repeat the operation of imparting an intermittent movement to said plate. The wire being loosened from the clamp jaws at the extreme right of the view (Fig. 1), the lever is operated back and forth until all of the slack is taken up, after which the ends of the wire may be spliced intermediate the two clamping jaws to the left. By the construction of a wire stretching device as shown and described, the arms or angled ends are of sufiicient length to allow plenty of room for splicing the ends of the Wire.
What I claim is:
1. A wire stretching apparatus comprising a bar provided with a longitudinally disposed slot, the portions of said bar beyond the ends of the said slot being bent parallel to each other, the ends of the bars extending laterally and concaved on their under edges adapted to receive a wire, flanged cam levers pivotally connected to the bar adjacent to the ends of said bar, the flange of each cam adapted to turn in contact with the end of the laterally extending portion of the bar, and the cam coliperating with the concaved portion of the lateral extension to securely clamp a wire, an angled bar adjustahly mounted upon said slotted bar, a cam lever pivotally mounted upon said adjustable bar and cooperating with the laterally projecting end thereof to grip a wire, and ratchet and pawl mechanism for moving said angled bar, as set forth.
2. A wire stretching apparatus comprising a bar provided with a longitudinally disposed slot, the portions of said bar beyond the ends of the said slot being bent parallel to each other, the ends of the bars extending laterally and concaved on their under edges adapted to receive a wire, flanged cam levers pivotally connected to the bar adjacent to the ends of said bar, the flange of each cam adapted to turn in contact with the end of the laterally extending portion of the bar, and the cam cooperating with the concaved portion of the lateral extension to securely clamp a wire, an angled bar, lugs projecting from the latter and adapted to have a play in said elongated slot, the end of said angled bar being bent laterally and forming a jaw, a cam pivotally mounted upon the angled lever and cooperating with said jaw to hold a Wire, and 10 ratchet and pawl mechanism for moving the angled bar independent of the slotted bar, as set forth.
