Description

genital' 0% ANsoN. r.- ADAMS, or INDIANAPOLIS, INDIANAv Letters Patent No. 83,435, datedfvctober 27, 1868.
rMPRovED WASHING-MACHINE.
The Schedule referred to in these Letters Patent and mak-ing part of the same.
oma-* To all whom. 'it mag/.concern Be it known that I, ANSON T. ADAMS, of Indian-Y apolis, in the county of Marion, and in the State of Indiana, have invented an Improved, Washing-Machine; and I do hereby declare th'at the following is a'full, clear, and exact description thereof', reference being had to the accompanying drawings, and to the figures and letters of reference marked thereon.
lhe nature of the invention consists in the application of a lever and two perforated bottoms to a washboiler, in the way and `for the purpose. hereinafter described, the said device to be made of wood and iron, or any other sutablemate'rials'.
To enable others skilled inthe art to make and use my said invention, I proceed to describe it more fully, as follows: y y
` K L, of Figure 1 of the accompanying drawings, representsa common wash-boiler. To this is attached, by means of a lug, at a, the lever'A B. To this lever is attached, by means of the mortise C, the post E D. To the'other end of the upright, E D, is attached, by its centre, the movable perforated bottom F G.
'HIis also aperforated bottom, which rests on the shoulder at the bottom ofthe boiler.
Now, the' lever A B is free to turn upon a centre at a, being slipped, by means of a convenient hole, upon the pivot of the .said lug, which lug is fully represented by Figure `2 of said drawings.
The hook g It, of Figure 3 of said drawings,is so constructed that whehfit is in its proper place on the lever A B, it will 'clasp' the `neck b of the lug, and so keep the lever ``romslipbing off. When the operator .desires to takeoff the lever, the hook can be turned up so far as to let it slip ofi' freely.
To use my said invention, the perforated bottom H I is first put -in its place, as represented in said fig. 1. Soap and clothes to be washed are putupon it; sui- 'cient water is then poured in; lastly', the lever A B,
and the movable bottom F G adjusted, as represented in said dg. l.` The boiler is then set on the fire. As
soon as the lwater boils, the lever is 'bscillated up and down. If this be continued for a few minutes, it will, by means of the motion produced in the 'water by the movable bottom F G, and by the heat of boiling, wash the clothes very clean, so that when the clothes come from` the boiler, they need only be rinsed.
What I claim, and desire to secure byLette'rs Patent is The application vof the lever A B and the perforated bottoms F G and H I to'an ordinary washboiler, for the/purpose and in the' way substantially as herein set forth. v V
` 2. The combination of the hook g h and the lug a, c with a common wash-boiler, with perforated bottoms, constructed as aforesaid, and used in the way and for the purpose hereinl set forth.
In testimony that I claim the'foregoing Specication, I have hereunto set my hand, this 25th day of August, 1868,
ANSON T. ADAMS. -Witnessesz WILL. -WALLACE,
