THREAD-PARTING MECHANISM FOR LOOM S- P a tented Oct. so, 1996.
Specification of Letters Patent.
- v -v Apuiicaliun filed May 21,1906. Serial No.'3l7,889. v r T HY .ol l.".'|..'! To all (I'll/UH) if "my (O/b00 1! and particularly pointe'd' out in thafollowiimg l.
Be it known, that I, EDWARD CUNNIFF, a, ClallnS "-III 1-,, i: :m-E' '1 5 citizen of the United States, and a resident of New Bedford, count)" of Bristol State of 5 Massachusetts, have invented on improvement in 'lhrenddarting Meohanism for Looms, of which the following description, in ,eonnection with the accompanying drawings is a. specification, lilioeliaiacivrs on the m dIlLWlllgi-l representing l ke parts.
' This uiveiition relates more especiullyto automatic iii[mg-replen shing loo-ms of the so-ealled fl'e'ele1""t \j)e, herein the running filling is replenished prior to eoniplme ere 'do'gibl i' ork looms. j I States patent to DHLPKH, No. 683,423,;dated September 24; 1901, muchalriist'n' is'fpi'ovided to piirt the thread of the 'Ifaniftigcateh "or'elamp the severed thrvml and I carry lfiorwarduso that it will be brought intqlhomn e of temple thread-cutter [u be hon] tho loom him a filling-fork utthe adjacent the replenishing movie-mien; fork. is located between the temple 'd-cirtter m d the sepn rme purl mg ml 'being"'i1i practice"mounted on =i lml1lo- ,feeler. the latter returns to normal inoperative osition, withtho Pill'llfli lliroml held by t ie eliunji, MIC/ll thread is drawn across or against the filling-fork, and sumvtimes this causes the lhread to be drown out realrwardly from the clamp before it can be i severed by the iemple thread-cutter. When occurs the pier-o of thread is apt to lml 4d eairriedbac inlo the cloth and market: am imi reflection then-in. This faulty air-lion is iable to occur iliull) (loublwfork loom ol' the character hereinhel'orv referrml to, and as ---sl1Qh looms are very lurg h in use I lmve showfimg, hivention as applied to u, loom of I tha t type. v My invention has for its object theprorluction ofmeank which prevent the parted pieu (ifvlilling from being drawn out of theelamp, 3 and sairlmeans also serve to retain the thread in aiosilion to be clamped and parted;
ho novel features of my invention will be fully described in tho subjoined specification '1 Figure 1 is a top 111,11 View of a suflicientxo portion of a, rloubleork automatic. fillihgerlaw'; pleni'sliing loom having ii temple thread-cu1a- Z mr and clamping and parting imegns withmy invention applied thereto. :Fig. 2 is aside J50 elevation of the clamping and parti means in normal or retracted;position withil the vlmnp closed. Rig. 3 ism-n inner side wow; enlarged, of the, thread-porter end thread-1; ehnnp in position to not upon thethreadmnd. showing the novel feature of; my, invention. Fig. 4 i's a vertical section tl ereof onith i 4 4, Fig. 3, looking towarrltheleft Theparter a nd clamp are 'so 1 eons" ruc and arranged that they will be in position 1,0 act upon the thread when the ;shut t1e is boxed and are mounted on theoshuttlefeelc-r, osin'the patent referredgto bulblhve omitted the I hroad-cateher rshtiwng. th

The upper end of the feeler Y is notched at 9o 1, Figs. 2 and 3. .n receive the filling-thread when the feeler is moved into opera tiyetposk lion :uljml-ut. the mouth of the shuttle-lion l Fig. l, and a fixed cutting-blade 2 is serum-(l to the llL'lCl at the loweiweglge orl'ace i 1 ol KIM-notch 1; such fare having a: transverse shoulder 3 thereon. I The movable member 4 is mounted on the 1 screw-stud 4 Fi 3, amlrukts irzninsl. the
llat'side of the feel r, this member serving as ice i a. combined clumping-jaw and'cuttmgJr'lnde.
its lower edgecooporating with the blade 2 to part the filhng-thread,and it also cooperates with the relatively fixed mei'nber 7'. (if-{the threud-elamp, said member Thriving a ininsverse shoulder 5 in ulineioent with the shoul- T and the feeler der 3. This fixed member 7 is held in place by the stud 4 and by a pin 10 in the feeler,
assed through a slot 9 in the member 4, the atter having a dependin heel 9, a springwasher 11 being interposed between the head of the stud 4 and the member 7 of the thread-clamp, pressing the latter against the blade-jaw 4, and the latter is in turn held against the side of the fceler. I have thus made the thread-clamp and the threadparter each comprise a movable and a relatively fixed member, and the two devices have the movable member 4 in common, as in Patent No. 683,423, referred to.
When the parter and clam are in operative osition, the filling-thread will enter the notch 1 of the feeler and the alined shoulders 3 and 5 will pass behind the thread, serving to guard against the thread drawing back out of the notch before the clamping and parting action. Thereupon the member 4 is operated by engagement of the lay with the heel 6, as is usual, and the thread t, Fig. 4, is
tossed down over the member 7 between it and the blade-jaw 4 and as the latter member'reaches dottedine position, Fig. 4, it will cooperate with the fixed cutting-blade 2 and part the thread.
Referring to Fig. 1, I ing-forks g at opposite sides of the loom, the fork g" being located between the temple Y, and as the feeler returns to normal position the clamped filling end i is drawn forward a ainst the fork g". his tends to cause the lling to slip or draw out of the clamp rearwardly, so that it cannot be brought into range of the temple thread-entter a; but herein the shoulder 5 acts to resist such rearward pull on the thread, aiding the clamp in retaimng its hold on the thread un til it 18 positioned roperly for the cutter c. As the thread has eenparted, the shoulder 3 at this particular time has no function; but when the thread first enters the notch 1 of the feeler both shoulders act to prevent any twist or kink in the thread, withdrawing it from the notch before it is clamped and parted.
Herein I have dispensed with the threadcatcher of the patent referred to; but the arm E, having a head e, is provided with a have shown two lillcam device e, Fig. 2, substantially as in said atent, to cooperate with a pin 12 on the blade-jaw 4 and open the latter as the feeler moves forward.
When the clamp and parter are moved bodily into operative position, the blade-jaw 4 is open and the heel 6 IS in the path of a portion of the lay to be struck as the same comletes its forward beat, acting through the lads-jaw 4 to clamp and part the thread t ad'aeent the shuttle.
he action on the return of the feeler to normal position has been already described.
Having fully described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Lettors Patent, is-
1. in an automatic filling-replenishing loom, a thread-parter and a thread-clamp, to act upon the thread. of the filling-supply to lll' abandoned, said partcr and clamp having a movable member in common, means on the relatively fixed member of the clamp to retain the thread in position and )revent it from drawing out of the clamp .alter it has been parted, and means operating through said movable member to eil'ect clamping and parting oi the thread upon replenishment of lilling.
2. in an automatic filling-replenishing loom, a thread )arter and a thread-elamp, to not upon the thread of the filling-supply to be abandoned, said porter and clamp having a movable member in common, a transverse shoulder on the relatively fixed member of the clamp to pass behind the thread and retain it in position to be acted upon, and to prevent it thereafter from drawing out of the clamp, and means operating through said movable member to effect clamping and parting of the thread upon replenishment of filling.
3. In an automatic filling-replenishing loom, a thread-porter and a threadmlamp, bodily movable upon replenishment of filling into position to act upon the thread of the filling-supply to be abandoned, the parter and clamp including a common movable mmnber, a transverse shoulder on the relalively fixed member of the clamp to pass behind the thread and retain it in position to he acted own, and means acting throu h said movable member to clamp and part t 0 thread, the shoulder also cooperating with the clamp to hold the thread after it has been parted.
4. In a loom provided with automatic lilling-replenishing mechanism, a shuttleieeler having a tl'iread-receiving notch in its end, a transverse shoulder on the lower face ol'thc notch, a fixed parting-blade adjacent the notch, a elamping iaw mounted on the wieeler, adjacent and parallel to the blade and having a transverse shoulder alined with the "shoulder on the feeler, a combined parting blade and clamping-jaw movably mounted on the [color between the fixed blade and aw, the shuttle-feeler being adapted to move into operative )osition prior to change of filling, to there )y position the parting and clamping devices to act upon the thread of the filling-supply to be abandoned, the alined shoulders at such time passing behind the thread and retaining it in the clamp after it has been parted, and means to act upon the movable combined blade and jaw to effect clamping and parting of the thread.
