Description

No. 834,125. PATENTED OCT. 23, 1906.
' E. M. HALLBAUER.
SCREW TOP FOR CANS.
' APPLICATION FILED MAY-15.1905.
W J i I Erma/11. flallbzuier this ERNST MORITZ HALLBAUER, or AMERICAN CAN COMPANY, OENEW JERSEY.
CHICAGO, ILLINOIS, ASSIGNOR TO OF N EW- YORK, N. Y., A CORPORATION SCREW-TOP FOR CANS.
To ail whom it may concern.- I Be it known that I, ERNST Monrrz HALL- BAUER, a citizen of the United States, residing in Chicago, in-the county of Cook and State of Illinois, have invented a new and useful Im rovement in Screw-Tops for Cans, of which the following is a specification.
My invention relates serew top cans. v I
The object of my invention is toprovide a screw to can of a simple, eflicient, strong, and dura le construction, in which the screwcap may be readily removed, however tightly it may become stuck or fixed by reason of the sticky or gummy contents of the can, and
Without danger of breakage; My invention consists in the means I employ to practically accomplish this important object or result-that is to say, it consists in a screw-top can having a screw-cap furnished with an upwardly-projecting rim and with a supplemental cap-disk having an upwardlyprojecting deep flange or rim fitting inside the upwardly-projecting rim of the screwcap, the two nesting rims of the screw-cap and supplemental cap-disk having a rolled, folded, or other seam uniting the same at theirupper ends and reinforcing and stiffene rims, said upwardly-projecting rims of the screw-cap and supplemental disk being furnished with a diametrical slot to receive anail or knife-blade or other implement to serve as a lever in unscrewing the ca My invention also consists in the novel to improvements in construction of parts and devices and in the novel combinations of herein shown or describe In the accompanying drawings, forming a part of this specification, Figure 1 is a side elevation of a screw-top can embodying m invention; Fig. 2 is a dparts and devices plan view, and Fig. 3
is an enlarged central vertical section.
In the drawings, A re sel of any suitable kind nished with flanges or ceive the base I) of the is soldered thereto. The screw-cap B' has screw-threads b and an inturned flange b to serve as a seat for the cork disk or packing C of the screw-cap D. The screw-cap D is furresents a can or vesaving a head a, furcollars a a to reserew top B, which nished with screw-threads d and with upwardly-projeeting extension or rim (1' above the cork disk C. Y
Specification of Letters Patent.
Application filed May 16,1905. Serial No. 260,398.
y, said cork or packing and sai mental cap-disk F to with a cork or packing disk the cork or screw-cap Patented Oct. 23, 1906.-
F is a supplemental ca -disk having an upwardlypro ecting deep ange or rim f fitting and nesting snugly within the u wardlyprojecting rim d of the capdisk The upper ends of the nesting rims d and f firmly and rigidl united together by a rolled seam f, which a so serves to strengthen andstiffen the united nesting rims. The united and nesting rims d f are furnished with a slot D, preferably extending substantially diametrically of the screw-cap to receive any suitable tool or implement to act as a lever in I unscrewing the cap.
G is a sheet-metal disk or washer interposed between the packing C and the sup leprevent said capisk sticking to the washer, and thus interfering with the unscrewing of the cap. The sup lemental' cap-disk F has an annular shou der or bead f to give it a narrow bearing on the disk or washer G, and thus enable the screwca%to be more readily unscrewed.
y this means a very effective, tight, and perfect closure is produced, while at thesame time the screw-cap 'may be readilyloosened or unscrewed, however tightly seated or stuck or fixed in place.
'I claim I 1.- In a screw-top can, the combination with a screw-top, of a {screw-cap furnished an having an upwardly-projecting rim extending above packing disk, a supplemental capit may be disk h or rim fitting and nesting within sai screwcap rim, said nesting rims both being furnishedwith -.re'gister1n slotsto receive a lever for unscrewing t metal disk or washer osed between supplemental disk, said supplemental disk having a narrow annular pro ection bearing against said interposed washer, substantially as specified.
inte
2. In a screw-top can, the combinationwith a screw-top, of a screw-ca furnished with a cork or packing disk an having an upwardly-projecting rim extending above the cork or packing disk, a supplemental capdisk having an upwardly-projectin or rim tightly fitting and nesting witIiin said rim, said nesting rims being both furnishe with registering slots to receive a lever for are aving an upwardly-projectin flange e cap, and a sheetflange I unscrewing the screw-cap, and said nesting slotted rims having each an inward roll or fold at its up er end to strengthen and stiffen the same and cause them to mutually sfiuplport each other, substantially as speci- 3. In a screw-cap can, the combination with a screw-top, of a screw-cap furnished with a cork or packing disk and having an upwardly-projecting rim extending above the cork or packing disk, a supplemental capdisk having an upwardly-projecting flange or rim tightly fitting and nesting within said screw-cap rim,"said nesting rims mutually supporting and bracing each and being both f rnished with registering slots to receive a lever for unscrewing the screw-cap, and said nesting rims having a folded or rolled seam uniting the same at their upper ends and serving as an enlargement or reinforcement to strengthen and stiffen said nesting rims and cause them to mutually support each other when the lever is applied thereto to unscrew the cap, substantial y as specified.
4. In a screw-pap can, the combination with a screw-top, of a screw-cap furnished with a cork or packing disk and having an upwardly-projecting rim extending above the cork or packing disk, a supplemental cap-disk having an upwardly-promoting flange or rim fitting and nesting within said screw-cap rim, said nesting rims being both furnished with registering slots to receive a lever for unscrewin the screw-cap, said nesting rims having a olded or rolled seain uniting the same at their upper ends and serving as an enlargement or reinforcing to strengthen and stiffen said nesting rims, and a sheet-metal disk or washer interposed between said cork or packing and said supplemental cap-disk, said supplemental disk having a narrow annular projection bearing against said interposed washer, substantially as s ecified.
