UNITED STATES" PATENT OEEIOE.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Oct. 23, 1906.
Application filed August 28, 1905. Serial No. 276,172.
To all whom t may concern:
Be it known that l, THOMAS B. ABBOTT, a subject of the King of Great Britain, residing at Sale, in the State of Victoria, Australia, have invented. certain new and useful lmprovements in Umbrellas; and I do declare the following to be a full, clear, and eXact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
This invention relates to umbrellas; and one of the principal objects of the same is to provide means for raising and lowering the umbrella from a position near the upper end of the handle.
Umbrellas as usually constructed' require to be opened by extending the hand under the cover and up to the runner or slide.
In my improvements as contemplated the umbrella may be raised from a point within easy reach from the'handle end of the stick.
Another object is to provide means whereby the umbrella may be raised Without reach ing und er the umbrella and in which the umbrella may be closed or lowered by gravity.
Still another obj ect is to improve and simplify the construction of umbrellas of this character.
These and other Objects are attained by means of' the construction illustrated in the accompanying drawings, in which- Figure 1 is a longitudinal sectional view through the stick of an umbrella made in accord ance with my invention. Fig. 2 is a transverse section on the line 2 2 of Fig. 1. Fig. 3 is a similar view on the line 3 3 of Fig. 1. Fig. 4 is a sectional view through one of the ribs and braces, and Fig. 5 is a sectional view through one of the levers which support the rib-braces and through the runner to which it is attached.
Referring to the drawings for a more particular description of my invention, the numeral 1 designates the stick, which is preferably, and as shown, of the tubular type and made of metal. The handle 2 may be secured to the stick in any suitable manenlargements 7 within the ribs and to permit them to move a required distance therein the U-shaped ribs at this point are provided with inwardly-bent iianges 8, and at the ends the flanges are bent down to form stops for the enlargements at the ends of the braces. Pivotally connected to the runner 9 by means of a wire 10 are a series of brace-supports 11, said supports being connected at their upper ends to the braces by means of rivets or pins 12. The runner 9 has connected to its lower end by means of a pin 14 a connecting-rod 15, extending within the stick 1, the lower end of said connecting-rod being attached to a slide 16 near the handle by means of a pin 17, said slide having an enlargement 18 to render the same readily movable by means of the thumb or rst linger of the hand. The stick is slotted at 19 and 20 to permit the runner and slide to move upon the stick 1.
The operation of my invention may be described as follows: By taking the umbrella in the hand and moving the slide forward the umbrella is readily opened, and a catch 21 springs out to hold the slide from backward movement. When the umbrella is opened, the braces slide within the ribs and the bracesupports move upon their pivots and upon the wire which secures them to the runner. When it is desired to lower the umbrella, by merely pressing upon the catch 21 the weight ofthe ribs and cover will close the umbrella.
From the foregoing it will be obvious that the connecting-rod need not be attached to the runner, but could be arranged to merely sustain the runner by means of a cross-rod similar to the pin, and when the slide was operated the runner would be pushed upward to hold the umbrella in open position. A reverse movement would permit the cover to close.
Various changes in the form, proportion, and the minor details of construction may be resorted to without departing from the principle or sacrificing any of the advantages of this invention.
Having thus described my invention, what l claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
1. An umbrella'comprising a stick, a runner mounted to slide thereon, a slide near the handle of the stick, a connecting-rod within the stick and connecting the slide and runner, a series of brace-supports connected to the upper end of the runner, a series of braces to which the upper ends of the brace-supports IOO IIO
or slide on the stick, a shank to move between the flanges, and Stretcher-supports connected -to said stretohers and to the runner, substan- I;
tially as described.
In testimony whereof I have hereunto set my hand n presence of two subscribing witnesses.
T. B. ABBOTT.
