Be it known that I, VICTOR G. BoYLEs, a citizen of the United States, residing at Logansport, inthe county of Cass and State of Indiana, have invented a new and useful Burial-Vault; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.

This invention relates` to that class of burial vaults or cases which are manufactured of plastic material, such as a suitable cement or concrete mixture.

The present invention has for its'object to provide a vault or case of thischaracter in which the body and the lid are suitably reinforced for the purpose of strengthening the construction.

A further object of the invention is to provide improved means for securing the lid upon the body of the vault; and `a further object of the invention is to provide the lid with suspending means whereby when the lid is secured in position upon the body of the vault the entire device may be suspended by suitable hoisting elements while it is being lowered into the grave.

With these and other ends in view, which will readily appear as the nature of the invention is better understood, the same consists in the improved construction and novel arrangement and combination of parts, which will be hereinafter fully described, and particularly pointed out in the claims.

In the drawings, Figure 1 is a side elevation of a burial-vault constructed in accordance with the principles of the invention. Fig. 2 is a longitudinal sectional view of the same. Fig. 3 is an end elevation. Fig. 4 is a transverse vertical sectional view. Fig. 5 is a top plan view. Fig. 6 is a perspective detail view of one corner of the body of the vault with parts broken away to illustrate the construction and arrangement of the reinforcing members.

Corresponding parts in the several figures are denoted by like characters of reference.

The body A of the improved vault, which is molded of any suitable cement composition, consists of a box of any suitable shape or dimensions, including the sides 1 1, the ends 2 2, and the bottom 3. Embedded in the side are metallic reinforcing-rods 4 4,

which are disposed across one another, as shown. Similar reinforcing-rods 5 5 are embedded in the ends 2 2 of the box or body, said rods 5 5 being likewise disposed across one another. The rods 4 and 5 are provided with terminal eyes 6 and 7, disposed adjacent to each other at the corners of the box, and said eyes are engaged by approximately vertical bolts 8, the latter being embedded at the corners of the box or body and provided with threaded extremities which extend above the upper edge of the box at the four corners. The lid B of the vault is likewise molded of cement and is made of suitable shape and dimensions to lit the box or body A, said lid being preferably provided in its under side with a groove 9 for engagement with the upper extremities of the sides and ends of the box or body A. Near the four corners of the lid are apertures 10 for the passage of the upper extremities of the bolts 8, which latter are provided with nuts 11, whereby the lid may be securely fastened in position. The lid is provided with eyebolts 12, embedded therein, and preferably reinforced by a washer-plate 13, which is likewise embedded in the lid. The eyebolts 12 are adapted to be'connected by rings 14 and links 15 with a hoisting-ring 16, adapted to be engaged by the hook connected with suitable hoisting apparatus, whereby the vault may be conveniently handled when it is being lowered into the grave.

The box or body 1 is provided with interiorly-disposed facing strips or cleats 17, partly embedded in the sides and ends near their upper edges, said strips or cleats being for the purpose of supporting textile or other material for lining the box, such material being conveniently secured to the strips or cleats by means of tacks.

From the foregoing description, taken in connection with the drawings hereto annexed, the operation and advantages of this invention will be readily understood. Under this construction a neat and very durable vault Amay be constructed at a very moderate expense. The lid may be very readily secured in position in such a manner as to enable the vault to be safely suspended in the manner described, the bolts securing the lid being not only embedded in the material of the body of the vault, but securely connected with the reinforcing members. Said reinforcing members are, moreover, connected by the bolts in such a manner as to form a very strong and durable structure.

Having thus described the invention, What is claimed is- 1. In a burial-vault, a box or body molded of plastic material7 reinforcing-rods embedf ded in the sides and ends of the box said reinforcing-rods being disposed diagonally across each other and having terminal eyes, and bolts embedded in the corners of the box and extending through the terminal eyes of the reinforcing-rods.

2. In a burial-vault, a box or body molded of plastic material, reinforcing-rods embedded in the sides and ends of the box, and bolts embedded in the corners of the box and serving to connect the reinforcing members With the ends and the sides; said bolts having threaded extremities projecting at the upper edge of the box; in combination With a lid 2 having apertures near the corners thereof for the passage of the bolts, and nuts upon the latter.
