BURIAL-CASE.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented April 30, 190'?.
Application filed December 20,1905. Serial No. 292,532.
T0 a/ZZ whom 7326 may concern:
Be it known that I, JOSEPH F. RUSSELL, a citizen of the United States, residing at Battle Creek, in the county'of Calhoun and State of Michigan, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Burial- Cases, and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description thereof, such as will enable Others skilled in the art to which it appertaius to make and use the same.
I My invention relates to burial cases, and more particularly relates to an article for the purpose constructed from plastic material, such as Portland cement or artificial stone foundation, and made into suitable shape in molds designed for the purpose.
Among other objects, my invention has for its purpose to constructa burial case or sarcophagus that will be neat and tasty in design, water and vermin proof, cheap and inexpensive to manufacture, and practically imperishable. Other objects and advantages will be more particularlyv set forth and described in the following specification and particularly pointed out in the appended claims.
In the drawings forming a part of this specification, Figure l is a vertical, longitudinal view in part section, of my improved burial case. Fig. 2 is a longitudinal plan view in part section. Fig. 3 is a plan view of the cover, reverse side, and Fig. 4 is a cross section of the burial case on the line a', 01;, of Fig. 1.
Like marks of reference refer to correspending parts throughout the several views, in which, A, represents the burial case, and B, its lid or cover.
In carrying out my invention, molds of Wood or other material are provided, in
-whichplastic material, such as Portland cement or kindred substance, is placed and molded into requisite form. The case or body portion, A, is designed more especially to serve as a container where the or dinary rough wood box is employed, and in ractice is somewhat larger than the casket Or which it is designed. By preference, this case is somewhat narrowed at the bottom, as shown, and transverse of the case upon its inner bottom surface a series of staggered ribs, a, are formed therewith.
The corners of the case are rounded, as
shown, and at either bottom end transverse gains, c, are formed. These gains intersect the outer ends of the case and provide means for receiving ropes or straps for lowering the case into the ground, and also for extricating suoli lowering device when the case has been seated. In lowering the case, ropes may be Aformed in double loops, each loop being caught within a gain and made to encircle the case at either end thereof, their portion above the case being united by means of a lowering rope, the latter being released when the case is lowered, and the loops pulled clear from the gains, and removed.
By preference the top of the case has a sharp, centrally-inclined rib, d, upon which a corresponding seat, e, of the cover, B, is adapted to fit, the united parts being made practically inseparable and air tight by the use of waterproof cementl applied to the adjoined parts. By means of the cover striding the upper edge of the case, the two are made to interlock and brace one another. The cover, B, is concaved upon the interior and its exterior may be formed convex, or comprise a llattened top portion verging at the ends and sides by 'means of one or more angles, as shown.
Upon the inner surface of the cover a series of transverse, arched ribs, f, are formed at intervals of its length, and arching with the curve of the cover at either corner thereof, ribs, g, are formed, the ribs in both instances forming stays for stilfening the cover and preventing its fracture. At either end of the cover and at both sides thereof, lifting notches, 7l, are formed by molding indentures within the cover. These notches provide 'for lifting the cover by hand and also form a means :for lowering the cover upon the case when in the ground, by means of tongs adapted to the purpose.
From the foregoing description, taken in connection with the drawings,l it will be seen that l have devised a burial case not only novel and ingenious in construction, but one also possessing the maximum of cheapness with time-enduring qualities.
Having, therefore set forth my invention, what I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
l. ln an artificial stone burial case, coinprising a box and its cover, said box portion having transversely disposed gains formed TOO on the bottorn thereof and intersecting the ends thereof, to Jforni means for lowering and removing the lowering means thereof.
2. In an artificial stone burial oase, coni- 5 prising a box and its cover, said cover having upwardly-tapering sides, eaeh of said sides near either end thereofl being provided with indentures or eoneavities the tops of Which form hand grips for lifting said cover, substantially as and for the purpose set forth. JOSEPH F, RUSSELL. Witnesses:
N. E. HUBBARD, MARY L. MILLER.
