UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
LAMP-STAND.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Application filed October 9, 1905- Patented Oct. 16, 1906.
Serial No- 281,953.
To all whom it may concern.
Be it known that I, HENRY C. HUeHEs, a citizen of the United States, residing at Joplin, in the county of Jasper and State of Missouri, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Lamp-Stands, of which the following is a specification.
My invention relates to lamp-stands, and has for its object to provide a stand adapted to be placed in any desired part of a room and having adjusting means for the lamp bracket or shelf, whereby the same may be raised and lowered at will.
It is a further object of my invention to provide a counterbalance for the lampbracket and a positive locking device adapted to secure said bracket to its support, thereby preventing the lamp fromfalling should the cord connecting the counterbalance with the lamp-bracket break.
With these and other objects in view the present invention consists in the combination and arrangement of parts, as will be hereinafter more fully described, shown in the accompanying drawing, and particularly pointed out in the appended claim, it beingunderstood that changes in the form, proportion, size, and minor details'may be made within the scope of the claim without departing from the spirit or sacrificing any of the advantages of the invention.
The drawing shows a side elevation of my improved lamp-stand, partly in section.
Referring to the drawing, 1 is the base of the stand, which may be of any preferred material or construction. To this base is firmly fixed a tubular support 2, upon which a sleeve 3, having secured to it the lampbracket 4, is free to slide. The support 2 has mounted at its upper end a pulley 5, over which passes a cord 6. One end of cord 6 is secured to the lamp-bracket and the other to a counterbalance 7, located Within support 2. This counterbalance is preferably constructed in such manner as to enable its weight to be increased or diminished in order to adapt it for lamps of different Weights.
In order to prevent the bracket and lamp from falling in case of an accident to cord 6, I provide a positive locking means consisting of a levercontrolled bolt 9, which passes through an aperture in the sleeve 3 and a registering aperture in the tubular support 2, thereby positively locking the two members together. This bolt is normally held in looking position by a spring 10, exerting an outward pressure on the free end of lever 11.
The stand of this invention, While exceedingly simple of construction, is practical and durable and by reason of the simplicity of its parts will not easily get out of order.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim as novel, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
A lamp-stand comprising a hollow supporting member, a bracket slidably mounted on and having a counterbalance within said member, and a locking means carried by said bracket adapted to retain the same in an ad justed position.
In testimony whereof I afIiX my signature in presence of two witnesses.
