Be it known that I, Enw rN E. BABNEY, of Groton, in the county of Tompkins, in the State of New York, have invented new and useful Improvements in Type-Writing Machines, of which the following, taken in connection with the accompanying drawings, is a full, clear, and exact description.

This case is a division of my application filed June 11, 1900, Serial No. 19,889.

This invention relates to improvements in typewriting machines, and refers more particularly to the type-bar and its hanger or support.

One of the objects of this invention is to simplify the c'onstruction of this part of the machine and to permit the use of a greater number of type in the same or less space than Another object is to enable any ordinary or unskilled workman to easily and quickly assemble these elements in the machinein perfect alinement without further adjustment, thereby materially reducing the cost ofthe machine. i-

A further object, is to provide a substan tially indestructible bearing for the type-bar,

more responsive to the touch of the key, and the stroke upon the platen is more effective.

To these and other ends, which will herein after appear, the invention consists in the combination, construction, and arrangement of the parts of a t pe-bar'and its hanger, as hereinafter fully escribed, and pointed out 1 I in, the claims.

The 0 eration of the construction will now be readi y understood upon reference to the foregoing description and the accompanying drawings; and it will be noted that some changes may be made'in the detail constrdction and arrangement of the parts without departing from the s irit of the invention.

Having thus descr1 ed my invention, what I claim, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, isp 1. In a type-writing'machine, the combination with a hanger having a circular opening, a cylindrical member ournaled in the o ening, and a type-bar having portions t ereof extended on op osite sides of the e opposite ends of the cylindrical members.

2. In a type-writin machine, the combination with a typear having separated walls, a hanger having a portion thereof in- ,type-bar having serted between the walls and ofslightly less thickness than-the distance between said walls, said portion of the hanger having a circular o ening, a cylindrical member in serted in t e opening and having its opposite ends securedto the side walls of the type-bar. 3. In a type-writing machine, the combination with a type-bar and a hanger, both having alined openings, the type-bar havin separated Walls and the hanger eing inserte serted in the opening in the hanger and having its opposite ends abutting against the inner faces of the walls of the ty ebar, the member being of slightly-greater ength than the thickness of the hanger, and means for securing the type-bar to said member.

4; In a type-writing machine, the combination of a supporting-hanger having a circular aperture, a type bar having separated walls arranged on I opposite sides of the hanger, said walls being separated a slightlygreater distance than the thickness of thehanger and provided with an aperture alined with the aperture of the aperture of the hanger and 1m ingedbetween the side walls of the typear, and a fastening member passed through the aper-- tures and sleeve.

5. In a type-writing machine, a type-bares joint com rising a hanger, a metal ring of substantia ly the, same thickness as the hanger and having a working fit therein, a portions embracing said hanger and ring, type-bar rigidly to said ring.

6. In a type-writing machine, the combination of a ty e-bar and hanger, one of said parts being bi urcated to receive the other, a

In a type-writing machine, the combination of a type-bar having a bifurcated portion, a hanger having a plate-like segmental -fin that is received in the bifurcated portion of the type-bar to guide the latter in its printing movement, and a detachable bearingsleeve-received in a. bearing-opening the hanger and secured to the type-bar.
