ALFRED G. F, KUROWSKI, OF BROOKLYN, NEW YORK, ASSIGNOR T0 UNDERWOOD TYPEVVRITER COMPANY, OF NEW YORK, N. 'Y., A CORPORATION OF DELA- WARE.
TYPEWRITING MACHINE.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Aug. 8, 1922.
Application filed September 10, 1920. Serial No. 409,323.
To all whom it may concern:
lie it known that I, ALFRED G. F. Knnow- SKI. a citizen of the United States. residing in Brooklyn Borough, in the county of Kings, city and State of New York, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in lypewriting Machines, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to typewriting machines in which a central type-guide is provided near the printing-point, and in which the types are provided with projections adapted to enter said guide which is usually placed in vertical alignment with the print-.
ing-point.
It'is necessary to bend the typebars, ad-
jacent the type-heads, to a greater degree the nearer they approach the ends of the usual segment in order that the types thereon may be in vertical alignment with the printing point on the platen. It has been found that the type-bars at the extreme ends of the segment had'to be bent to such a degree as to impair the effectiveness of the central guide.
provided auxiliary side-guides, as set forth in the a 'zplication of George W. Campbell, Serial h o 3%1928, filed September 24, 1919. The present invention provides a new structure for the type-guide. having a central and two auxiliary side-guides. and also pro-- vides means whereby the width of the guides may be adjusted, and the guides then locked.
The type-guide of the present invention may constitute a new article of manufacture comprising a base or attaching portion, a
central pair of spaced jaws rising there In addition to thecentral guide. there have, therefore, been guides and applied to the machine (only part of which is shown).
. Figure 2 is a front view'of the structure shown in Figure 1. I
l igure 8 shows the device dissociated into its various parts and disconnected from the machine. l 4
. Figure 1 is a front View .of a modified form looking in the direction of the arrow in Figure 5. v
Figure 5 is an end" view of the device shown in Figure 4.
Figure 6 is a detail section of one of the beveled-head adjuStingscreWs taken on the line 6-6 of Figure 'The machine comprises .the usual typebars 1.0, pivoted upon a fulcrum rod 11, and
operated by the usual =key-levers (not The type-bars operatein a seg-r shown.) ment 12, having radial guide-slots13 for the type-bars 10. Each of thetype-bars carries a type-block or, type-head 15 bearing (in this-instance) three types 16. In the ordinary typewriter, eachtypeblock has a projection 1? in line with the type and adapted to operate in a guide-slot of the type-guide. The lattercomprises a baseformingbracket or attaching portion 20 fixed to the segment by means of screws 21,.andconsists of an upstanding portion 2% having risers 25 providing jaws spaced apart to form a central guide-slot 18. The
risers end in lugs or flanges 19, forming lower j at s. each presenting a fiat upper surface inclinedsubstantially radially from the printing-point, which is slightly above the topsof the risers. the type striking against the platen 30. Each riseris provided in its outer side wthtapped holes- 31 and In addition the left-hand riser has a tapped hole 33, while the right-handriser has a corresponding clearance hole 34.
Adapted to be attached to the risers are side members 36" having inclined upper flanges 37, forming upper jaws, which run in the same direction and are of the same form as the flanges or lower aws 19 on the risers. The side members are adapted to be held in position so that' the upper flanges '37 are spaced above lower flanges 19 a distance equivalent to guide space 18, or
' slightly more than the thickness of the typebar, thereby to form "auxiliary guide-slots.
with holes 33 and 34. The attachment of lowering the side members.
and are the auxiliary guides. The width of these guides may be adjusted by raising or This is accomplished by loosening screws 43 and screwing beveled-head screws 42 in or out of notches 41 as desired to raise or lower the side members, since the latter ride upon the bevelof screws42. The side members are then looked in position by means of the screws l3. i
The adjustment'of the central guide is accomplished by means of a pair of screws, either otwhich may be the adjusting screw or the locking screw. A screw 45, extending loosened.
irom one jaw 25 to the other, passes through clearance hole 34 andengagesthe-screwthreads in the tapped hole 33. It will be seen that the action of this screw will be to draw the jaws together. The other screw is a beveled-head screw 50 (similar to the screw 62 shown enlarged in Figure 6) passing or entering between the jaws and having threaded engagement with the inlner walls of the jaws, the adjusting screw s45 and 50 being disposed transversely or at 40 right'angles to each other. It will be apparent from Figure 6 that upon entrance of the beveled head between the jaws the latter will be spread apart. The adjustment is accomplished as followszAssuming that the jaws are too. close together, the beveled-head screw 50 is screwed in to spread the jaws apart, the screw being first released .or When the desired opening has been obtained screw 45 is tightened and will prevent the jaws from moving out of this position, and so serves to lock the jaws in adjusted position. Assuming that the jaws are too far apart, screw is released,
H and screw 45 is screwed in until the jaws side members 36 and risers 25 integral. The.
above in connection with the adjustment of the auxiliary guides does not, therefore, depend upon movable side members. The risers carry both jaws of the auxiliary guides 60, while the central guide is the same as the Figures 1, 2 and 3 species. The adjustment of all of the guides is accomplished in the same manner as the central guide of the Figures 1, 2 and 3 device, i. e., by two screws, either one serving as the ad justment screw while the other is the looking screw. Screw 61 passes through a clearance hole in one jaw and engages a tapped hole in the other. Beveled-head screw 62 passes orenters between and engages the screw-threaded interior walls of the jaws. The ad'ustment of any of the guides is accomplis ed in the same manner as described central guide of Figures 1, 2 and 3.
The advantages of the auxiliary slots are suflicientlyset forth in the Campbell application previously referred to. Since the type-blocks 15 must strike the printingpoint in a vertical line, it is apparent that the type-blocks near the ends of the segment 12 must be turned on their type-bars 10 an increasingly greater degree as they approach the ends of the segment. Such bent type-bars tend to rattle or spring laterally and their efficiency is thus impaired. Theauxiliary guides obviate this objection.
Several keys at each end of the segment chine, as well as a more nearly perfect alignment and spacing of the printed characters along the printing llne on the platen,
thereby improving the quality of the work.
In the particular construction or embodiment of the invention illustrated in Figures 1 to 3, inclusive, of the drawings, and forming a new article of manufacture, the base or attaching portion 20, the upstanding central pair of jaws 25 and the inner members or jaws 19 of the lateral or outer pair of jaws, are all formed integrally or in one piece, whilethe outer jaws 37 of the outer or lateral pair ofjaws form parts of the separate attachable members 36. In the modified construction forming the new article of' manufacture illustrated iii Figures 4 and 5, the auxiliary guides 60, forming the outer or lateral pair of jaws, are carried by the upper ends of and formed in i one piece with the central pair of jaws and with thebase or attaching portion of the device. In both these varieties. of the new article of manufacture, and as hereinbefore particularly described, separate means are provided for independently and relatively adjusting the jaws of each pair to vary the width of the guide-slot formed between the jaws.
Variations may be resorted to within the scope of the invention, and portions of the improvements may be used without others.
lilaving thus described my invention, ll claim:
