DISS, OF ILION', Ian?! YORK.
THE-WRITER.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, Louis P. Dies, of Ilion, in the county of Herkimer and State of New York, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Type-Writers; and Ido hereby declare that the followi is a.- full clear, and exact description there ii which will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, and to the characters of reference marked thereon, which form part of this specification.
The object of my present invention is to provide certain improvements in typewriters of one of the forms of so-c'alled visible writers, wherein provision is made for the mounting of a suiiicient number of type bars in the machine withoutcrowding or placing them in such close juxtaposition as to inter fere with their ready placing, adjustment and removal; and further to provide such a construction whereinprovision is made for the type when at rest to become arranged in a single semi-circular series and provision is made for adjusting and alining with facility and to enable the returning after removal to the same position with certainty.
A further object is to provide an improved bearing for the type bars, whereby the type bar is mounted for free action adapted to deliver the type on a printing point with great accuracy, and Where wear is compensated for by the form of the bearing in a way to retain these advantages.
Figure 1 shows a sectional view of a typewriter frame in connection with type bars, type bar hangers and type bar actuating mechanism arranged therein, according to my present invention. Fig. 2 is a longitudinal section of a typewriter frame showing certain type bar hangers arranged in position therein. figs. 3, 4 and 5 are details showing the three forms of type bars employed in my present construction, Fig. 6 is an enlarged sectional detail showing a type bar hanger and the manner in which it is mounted in the machine frame. Fig. 7 is a detailed view mostly in section on an enlarged scale of the type bar bearing.
eferring to the reference letters and figures in a more particular description, 1 indicates a typewriter frame which has in the present instance a segmental type bar hanger beam or segment .5 secured at its upper outer l l i l I l l f I l l I l l Specification of fietters Patent. ends in the main frame of the machine. This segment 2 is relatively wide from front torear of the machine and on its upper or inner face is provided with shoulders or offsets whereon three sets of type bar hangers a, b
and-c are respectively mounted in the manner hereinafter pointed out. The hangers a, I; and (z are substantiallysimilar and consist of a pair of spaced arms 3, which receive b tween their iii-ejecting ends the pivotal end of the type or and at their are provided with and secured toa vertical cylindrical shank or post 4. The post 4 is received in a cylindrical hole in the segnient 2, and the same is secured and adjusted as follows: A set screw 5 is provided to engage against the lower or outer end of the post 4 to adjust the same longitudinally in the opening in the segment. This set screw 5 is preferabl mounted in a separate piece or strip 6, whic 1 maybe secured to the body of the segment 2 proper by a suitable number of screws 1. R0- tary adjustment of the hangeris controlled by an EILlJIISt21bl8 stop provided in screw 8, which is adapted to engage not against the center but a ainst one corner of the han er. When adjusted the hanger may be beam or secured in its position in the segment 2 by the set screw 9 extending through the 2;; of the segment and bearing against the post 4. The type bars 10, which are of. three forms and three lengths, as shown in Fi e. 3-, 4 and 5, to adapt the pivotal end to reacn the several pivotal points in the three banks of hangers a, b and c, are respectively pivoted or hung, hereinafter particularly described, in the up er or inner ends of the hangers respective y. The swinging ends of the type bars 10 are adapted to normally rest on a semi-circular rest or cushion 11 in a single row or series when in their normal out-ofuse position, and. the type bars are of such length as to deliver the blow of the type on the printing point of the platen 12.
For operating the several ty e bars there are provided in the' rear part '0 the frame a set of bell crank levers 13 pivoted in fixed brackets provided on a-curved or segmental frame bar 14 in the rear portion of the frame. One arm of the bell-crank 13 is relatively long and the other shor't, and the long arm, which projects upwardly, is connected by a connecting rod 15 with an eye adjacent to the pivotal end of the type ba'r. =The bell crank 13 is connected to and adapted to be actuated from the key lever 16 by a thrust rod, as 17, extending between the rear swinging end of the key lever and the bell crank 13 and coupled to each. In order to better distribute the leverage, the key levers, as 16, are of two or more forms and preferably respectively mounted on the two sets of pivots 1.8 and 19. The keys provided on the respective key levers are indicated by 20.
it is evident that by arranging the type our DuilQdi'n' in several banks or series they can be made larger and wider, and provision made for much longer type bar bearing than if the hangers were arranged in a single row. It is alsoobvious that by the arrangement illustrated, each hanger 1S much more accessible.
The type bar pivot 25 is provided with conical bearings .25 of a much sharper and more pointed form than heretofore or ordinarily employed, and which may be denominated acute and which "bearings vare received in similar shaped bearing openings in the hanger walls 3. The conical bearing of the pivot 25 runs into the body of the pivot in such inanner as to aflord a square shoulder as between the base of the bearing and the body of the pivot. This shoulder is adapted to engage against the wall of the hanger around the conical bearing opening and resist any tendency of the bearing from wedging tightly in the hearing which on account of its acute form is liable to occur. A slight enlargement or boss, as 26, may be provided around this bearing opening to engage the square shoulder on the end of the pivot if preferred, as shown in Fig. 7, although this is not essential. The parts are so proportioned that the wear on the square shoulder will keep pace substantially with the wear on the conical parts, and by heading up a rivet 27 extending between the walls 3 of the hanger or tightening the screw at the same point occasionally, wearmay be taken up from time to time. It is obvious that with an obtuse form of conical bearing a portion of the fofhe applied to the type bar is lost,,being directed to wedging the hearing walls apart, while-an acute form of concal bearing is liable-to wedge in its bearing,
eeaaoi but furnishes better resistance to the force applied to operate the type bar.
The form of bearing herein shown overcomes the defec'ts of both the obtuse and acgte forms of conical bearing.
t changes in and described may from the spirit What I claim as new and by Letters-Patent is: i
from the construction herein be made without departing of my invention.
desire to secure 1. The combination in a typewriter of a segment, cylindrical shank receiving openings therein arranged with their axes directed substantiallytoward the printin point, type bar hangers having cylindrica shanks adapted to be received 111 said openings, meansfor adjusting a shank longitudh nally in said openings and for rigidly securing the same in theopening, substantially as set forth.
. 2. In a typewriting machine, the combination of a segment having cylindrical shank receiving openings therein arranged in plural series with their'axes directed substantially toward the printing point, hangers having cylindrical shanks adapted to be receivedin said openings, means for rotatix'ely adjusting the shanks in said open ings and means for rigidly securing the shanks in thebar when ad]usted, substantially as set forth.
3. In a typewriting machine the combination of type bar hangers having cylindrical shanks arranged in plural series, the axes of the shanks arranged substantially radial from the printing point, type bars mounted in the hangers with their pivots at various distances from the printing point and being of such various lengths that the ty will strike a common printing point and orm a single series at their rest, substantially as setfoi'th.
In witness \vhercofylhave atfixed my signature, lGth day of Sept, 1907.
