To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, WVILILIAM F. HELMOND,

According to the present invention, the plate which is utilized for holding the keylevers to their bearing upon the rod may comprise an extension adapted to bear against the screws which serve to ad ust the tension of the returning springs. V By having this extension resilient, it may be stlif q enough to serve to prevent the screws from '3, turning under the Jarringof writmg or of ,transporting the machine, and yet at the same time may yield easily enough to enable the screws to be adjusted to vary the tension of the springs without removing the plate. This avoids the necessity of using set-screws or other devices for locking the adjusting screws.

The key-levers 1 bear keys 2 at their forward ends, and are fulcrumed at their rear ends 3 and are connected between their ends to the type-bars 4. The rear end 3 of each lever 1 is provided with an upwardIy-opening bearing slot 5, which sets up over a horizontal transverse fulcrum rod 6. This rod extends the entire width of the system of key-levers, which work in slots 7 forming a comb in a transverse bar 8, in which said fulcrum rod is fixed. In said transverse bar are also provided screws 9 individual to the key-levers, and compression springs 10 are pressed upwardly by the screws against the key-levers for returning them to normal positions after actuation; such springs normally holding the slotted bearings of the key-levers up against the fulcrum rod.
I provide a key-lever retaining plate 11, which is mounted upon said transverse bar and extends across the machine in such position that its upper edge 12 liesljust below the ends of the key-levers, to prevent the latter from being accidentally dropped from the fulcrum bar and dislodged.
This retainingplate or look, held in place by screws 13, is made to do the further duty of locking the. spring-adjusting screws 9 against accidental rotation. For this purpose, said plate 11 is extended downwardly at 14 and then bent upwardly at 15 to form a yielding retainer 16 for the screws 9, which are flat-sided and cannot turn without bending said retaining plate. Thus, by a simple and inexpensive contrivance, the key-levers are locked in position and the spring-ad justing screws 9 are prevented from accidentally rotating. The screws 9 are provided'with slots 17 to receive a screw-driver, and the retainer 16 is adapted to yield easily enough to enable the screws 9 to be turned against the tension of the retainer 16.
The plate may include openings 18 in the resilient portion thereof Where it joins the body of the plate; said openings serving to for said key-levers held in position upon said mounting, screws adapted to bear against. said springs and to be ad usted to vary the position of the springs, and an extension of said plate adapted to bear against flat surfaces upon said screws to hold the screws against turning.

6. In a typewriting machine, the combination with key-levers and a rod on which they are journaled, of a plate adapted to hold said key-levers to their bearing upon the rod, a mounting for said rod, returning springs for said key-levers held in position upon said mounting, screws adapted to bear against said springs and to be adjusted to vary the position of the springs, and-a U-shaped extension of said plate having a free edge joined to the body of the plate along a line having openings forming a resilient member to bear against fiat sides of said screws.
