To all whom it may concern Be it known that I, EDWARD B. Hess, a citizen of the United States of America, residing in the borough of Manhattan, city, county, and State of New York, have invented a certain new and useful Improvement in lVriting-Machines, of which the following is a specification.
This invention comprises a new line-lock organization hereinafter set forth in detail.
In the accompanying drawing: Figure l is a verlical longitudinal section of so much of a front strike typewriting machine as is deemed desirable to illustrate the invention; Fig. 2, a rear elevation: Fig. 3, a plan: Fig. at a rear elevation of margin stop device: and Fig. o'shows a modification.
X and Y indicate the side or end plates of a carriage of which S is the rack bar and S the ordinary cylindrical platen mounted to turn in the end plates. In-rear of the platen, there is mounted in the end plates a transversely disposed bar N having coincident and'equally spaced teeth on its upper and rear surface. On this bar are adjustably mounted right and left hand margin stops K, and also intermediate adjustable stops M that may be used for tabulation purposes.
J is a center or frame stoppivoted upon the frame at j and adapted to be moved transversely of the toothed bar N.
In the particular construction illustrated, the center stop- J is so arranged as to be out of the path of the tabular stops M but in the path of the margin stops K. The stops M are bifurcated and closely fit in the spaces bet-ween the upper and side teeth of the rack bar. The margin stops may each be constructed as follows: Each has a pivoted spring latch K adapted to engage the spaces between the teeth on the upper surface of the bar N ,pivoted on a stop frame K that straddles the rack bar and is held in position thereon by cross pins Z.- extending beneath the bar between lugs on opposite sides of the frame. It is known that heretofore various means for locking key levers both above and'below the same have been proposed. The construction herein described is characterized by the following novel features: (a) the key levers are pivoted at their rear ends and the rigid locking plate acts against their under faces adjacent their finger piece ends: (11) the locking plate is applied to the under faces of the key levers contiguous to the guide comb which is located adjacent the finger These features have the advantage that when the finger piece of a locked lever is struck the blow is received upon the rigid locking blade conguide comb and near the the means described, or in other approstop is disengaged the keys are cothe key board where their upturned ends, finger piece end, with the result that there standing in different rows or banks as usual, are equipped with finger pieces, They are all of the sa e character and the drawing shows but e, the shorter levers having 1ts finger piece in the rear bank or row of the kev board. The invention is shown applied to a front strike machine. It is, however, not restricted to machines of that type.

I claim:
' 1. In a typewriting machine, the combination of horizontally disposed 'flat key levers pivoted at their rear ends and each formed with a locking surface on its lower edge adjacent its front end with a clearance space at the end of the locking surface, all said locking surfaces being arranged o posite each other transversely of the mac me, a
key lever locking member arranged below said clearance space and in juxtaposition to the locking surface, a carriage adapted to be moved step by step transversely of the machine, a stop carried by the carriage, a cooperating stop on the frame, an operative connection between the latter and said locking member, said connection extending from the rear of the machine forward to said locking member, whereby when the two stops come in contact said lockin member is moved beneath the locking sur aces of the key levers to lock them against depression and means under the control of the operator for unlocking the key levers to permit their actuation.
