To ((7/ whom it may concern Be it known that Rowsiir, a subject of the Emperor of Germany, or a citizen of Germany, but having taken out preliminary United States naturalization papers, residing in Brooklyn borough, in the county of Kings, city and State of New York, have invented certain new and useful lmprovcments in T ypewriting-Machines, of which the following is a specih'cation.
This invention relates to typewriting machines and more particularly to tabulating mechanisms therefor.
The principal object of my invention is to provide an improved tabulating mechanism conveniently arranged for operation and 'capable of considerable Hexibility in use.
In the embodiment of the invention herein disclosed, provision is made of denomination-selecting members mounted to move` with the carriage and connected with denominational or decimal stops, so that, by manipulation of a selecting member of the desired denomination, operative positioning of the corresponding stop will be effected.
Further provision is made of means whereby, eoncomitantly with the setting of the denominational stop, ing column-stops will be moved intoposition to enable the stops thereon to be engaged by an operatively .positioned denominationalE stop, and the carriage will be released from control by' the escapement mechanism.
Another feature consists in the provision of means 'whereby the improved tabulating mechanism can' he used for ordinary tabulation. To`this end, provision is made of means for retaining one of said denominational stops in operative position, and of a tabulator key of the usual form for moving the column-stop bar into operative position and concomitantly releasing the carriage. 'ithout a stop held in operative position on the, carriage. the ordinary tabulator key. acting alone, would be effective only to release the carriage.

.Character keys 1 acting through intermediate parts, not shown, cause type-bars 2 to be swung against platen 3 supported on a carriage 4 slidably mounted on rods 5 and 6. Said carriage 4 is urged toward the left side of the machine by means of the usual strap 7 and spring drum 8, and its movement under such urging is controlled by the usual escapement mechanism. Operative connection between said carriage 4 and the escapement mechanism is established by a rack bar 9 pivotally mounted on said carriage andv normally meshing with the pinion 1() forming part of said escapement mechanism. Said pinion 10 has a usual one-way connection, not shown, with an escapement wheel 11 which is controlled by means of fast and loose dogs 12 and 13, respectively. Operation of said dogs `12 and 13 to permit movement of the escapement wheel is effected through a movable frame 14 comprising a universal bar 15, which is engaged' by heels 16 on the type-bars 2 during the latter part of the printing stroke.
The machine is also provided with a tabulator key. 17 mounted on a lever 18, which, bv means of a link19 pivotally connected that upon depression of tahulator key-17l motion will be transmitted through the parts y just described to lift rack bar 9 out of mesh with said pinion 10, and thus release the carriage from control by the escapement mechanism.
The mechanism thus far described is well known in the Underwood typewriter.
In the embodiment of the invention herein disclosed, the tabulating mechanism is carried at the front of themachine. To this end, a frame 27 is secured to a projection 28 of the typewriter carriage, and provision, is made of denominational or decimal stops 29 slidably mounted in a slotted bracket 30 secured to frame 27. Direct actuation of said stops 29 is obtained by means of levers 31 pivoted on shaft 32 carried by frame 27, each oi' said levers having at its lower end a pin 33 projecting into a slot 34 at the rear end of the corresponding stop. Each lever is eng-aged by a spring 35, which acts to hold the upper end of the lever against a stop formed in the cover 36 of frame 27. F or moving levers 3l to operatively position stops 29, bars or plungers 37 are `mounted in traine 27. At their rear ends, all of said bars 37 are guided in a slotted portion of frame 27 and are provided with slots 37al through which passes a shaft 38 mounted in 'said frame 27. This arrangement permitsa limited movement ot' said plungers. 1n order to provide sufficient space for the keys 39 carried at the front ends of said plungers, alternate plungers are curved upwardly near their rear ends and then carried forward parallel to the straight plungers. Both sets of plungers have their forward ends guided in slots in plate 40 carried at the outer end oi frame 27 As a result of the different shapes of the rtwo sets 'of plungers 37, the convenient arrangement of keys 39 in two banks is obtained. For coperationvwith stops 29, there are provided column-stops 42 adjustably positioned along a rack 43 having teeth 'at letterspace distances apart. Said rack 43v forms part of the swinging frame which also comprises arms 44 fixed on a rock shaft 45. An arm 46 fixed on shaft 45 is provided at its outer end with a cam slot 47 through which extends a screw 48 supported by atabulator key lever 18. It will be seen that actuation of either shaft 45 or lever 18 will serve to actuate the other.
Mounted on the frame, comprising 'the rack 43, are arms 49 carrying a brake bar 50, which, in coperation with brake block or brake shoe 51 mounted on frame 27, constitutes normally ineffective braking means for controllingr the carriage when released from the escapement mechanism.
It will be seen that upon movement ot' the plunger 37 to operatively position the corresponding denomination-stop 29, the depending finger 4l on said plunger will engage bar 50 and bring the same into operative engagement with brake shoe 5l, at the same time bringing stops 42 into position `to coperate with the operatively positioned stop 29 andeffect the release of the carriage through connections including rock shaft 45, arm 46, and .lever 18.
In ordinary use, stops 42 determine the tabulator column, and stops 29 the denomination in such column, and tabulating action is effected by a key 39. Vith the carriage at any position `in its path, actuation ot' a denominational key will cause coperativu j' positioning of the corresponding denominational stop and the column-stop rack. and. upon release of the carriage, theoperatively positioned denominational stop will move until lit com-es into engagement with the column-stop corresponding to the next tabulating column. The only result of depressing key 17 is to release the carriage 4 l'rom the escapement mechanism. l
Provision is made whereby tabulation in the ordinary way can be effected by depression of key 17. For this purpose, a pin 52 is secured to the rear end of the letthand plunger 37, and another pin 53 to the upper end of the corresponding lever 31. both of said pins extending through -a slot in frame 27 of sufficient extent to permit free movement. These pins are engaged bv a cam-shaped member 54 forming part ot' an arm 55 pivotet at 56 on the frame and provided at its other end with a finger-piece 57. Th'erear edge 59 of' member .54 acts to force pin 53 and the lever carrying the samel to the rear, and to thereby operatively position the left-hand denominational stop. Edge 59 is provided with a depression 60, and at the limit of movement of arm 55, pin 53 moves into said depression and latches the parts in position.

Having thus described my invention, I claim:
1. In a tabulating device, thev combination with two elements having relative traveling movement, of a series of stops mounted on one of said elements, al second series of stops mounted on the other of said elements, the normal position of the stops being such that stops of both sets must be moved to operative-position toplace them in coperative relation, a plurality of keys for operating one set of stops for denominationaltabulating, a single key, and means actuated by said single key for-bringing a stop of the first series and a stop of the second series into coperative relation for column-selecting.
2. In a typewriting machine, the combination with a traveling carriage, of controlling means ltherefor comprising two sets of stops mounted respectively on said carriage and the typewriter frame, the stops of both sets being normally in inoperative position, and means for moving a selected stop of one set into operative position and concomi- -tantly moving all stops of the other set into operative position.
3. In a. tabulating mechanism, the com bi. nation with two elements having relative` movement, of two sets of stops respectively carried by said elements, the stops of both sets being mounted for movement to operative and inoperativepositions, individual means for moving stops of one set into operative position, and means universal to said individual means and actuated thereby for moving all stops of the other set into opeyative position simultaneously. v
4." In a tabulating mechanism, the combination with two elements having relative movement,` of one set of stops mounted on one element for individual movement to and from operative position, a second set of stops mounted on the other element for movement together to and from operative position, devi es individual to the stops of the first set for operatively positioning the same, and means actuated by any of said indii vidual devices for advancing to operative vposition all stops of the second set.
5. In a tabulating devlce for typewriting machines, the combination with two elements having relative traveling movement, of a series of denominational stops carried at single letter-spaces apart on one of said elements, a series of column stops adjustably positioned along the other of said elements, means for severally moving said denominational stops to operative position, and means actuated by said severally moving means for simultaneously movingI all of said col-l umn stops to operative position.
6. In a typewriting machine, the combination with a traveling carriage and an escapement mechanism therefor, of a series of stops mounted on said carriage, key-actuated devices individual to said stops for operatively positioning the same, a second series of stops mounted on the frame ofthe machine, connections for releasing said carriage, "means actuated by a single key for operatively positioning all stops of said second series and concomitantly operating said connections for releasing said carriage from the escapement mechanism, means universal to said individual key-actuated devices for moving all stops of said second series into operative position and concomitantly operating said connections :for releasing said carriage, andmeans to lock a stop of the first series in operative position, thereby enabling tabulation to be effected by the single actuating key of the second series.
7. In a typewriting machine, the combination with a traveling carriage, of tabulating mechanism comprising a series of movable stops mounted on said carriage at letter-space'l intervals transversely of the machine, a transverse bar movably mounted on the typewriting frame, but fixed against movement transversely of said frame, a second series of adjustable stops carried by said bar, devices for selectively moving stops of the first series into operative position, and means whereby, upon actuation of any of said stop-moving devices, said bar will be positioned to present stops thereon in position to be engaged by the operatively positioned stop on said carriage.
8. In a typewriting machine, the combination with a traveling carriage, of tabulating mechanism, including a series of movable denominational stops mounted on said carriage, individual actuating devices for moving said denominational stops into operative position, column stops, a columnstop bar on which the column stops may be adjustably positioned, means for supporting said column-stop bar, whereby longitudinal movement thereof will be prevented, but triuisverse movement will'be permitted,
and a device universal to said individual` device universal to said individual means,
whereby operation of 'any ot' said individual means to/operative/ly position a denomina-v tional stop will effect movement of said supporting device to operatively position the column stops carried thereby for coperation with an operatively positioned denominational stop.
10. In a typewriting machine, the combination with a series of slidably mounted stops, of pivotally mounted levers having pivotal connections, respectively, with said stops, key bars operatively connected with said levers, mea-ns for normally holding said stops, levers and key bars in positions such that said stops will be ineffective, and a device whereby one of said key bars can be locked in inoperative position and a correspond ig stop moved toand latched 1n operative position.

In a typewriting machine, the combination with a series of movable stops and a supporting frame therefor, of levers connected to said stops for moving the same to operative and inoperative positions, means for normally urging said stops to lnoperative position, key plungers for actuating said lev'ers to operatively position said stops, means for limiting the movement of said key plungers under the influence of said urging means, and means for operatively positioning one of said stops, independently of the corresponding key plunger. comprising a pin on the corresponding lever` a pin on the corresponding key plunger, and a member pivoted on said frame having a projection so shaped that when moved between said pins, said key plunger will be locked in forward position, and a corresponding lever will be moved into and latched in position tooperatively position a corresponding stop.
12. In a typewriting machine, the combination with a stop mounted for movement into and out of operative position, of means for controlling the position of said stop, including a key plunger, and means for locking said key plunger in inoperative position, and for moving said stop into and latching the same in operative position.
13. In a typewriting machine, the combination with a traveling carriage and an escapement mechanism therefor, of a tabulator lever, tabulator-lever-actuated means for releasing said carriage from the control of said escapement mechanism, a rock-shaft mounted at the front of the machine, a stop-carrying rack-bar. a friction bar supported by arms fixed on said rock-shaft, means for carrying a` series of stops, a friction member supported on the front` of' the carriage, and connections between said tabulator lever and said rock-shaft whereby, upon the depression of said tabulator lever, said rack-bar will be positioned with a stop thereon in position for engagement with an operatively positioned stop on said stopcarrying means, and said friction bar will engage said friction member.
14. In a typewriting machine, the combination with a traveling carriage and an escapement mechanism therefor, of denominational stops slidably supported in said carriagefcolumn stops, a column-stop rack, a shaft on which said column-stop rack is mounted for swinging movement, mleans controlled by said shaftl for releasing Said carriage from said escapement mechanism, devices individual to said denominational stops for operatively positioning the same, and means universal to said devices for rocking said shaft, and thereby moving said rack so as to position stops thereon for engagement with an operatively positioned denominational stop, and concomitantly effecting the release of said carriage.

In a typewriting machine. the combination with a-traveling carriage, of denominational stops mounted for movement into and out of operative position` pivoted levers having operative connections at their lower ends with said denominational stops, means individual to said levers for withdrawing said stops from operative position, and plungers engaging said levers at their upper ends and carrying keys at their outer ends, alternate plungers having such con formation that the keys on said plungers will be arranged in two banks, those of' one bank being staggered with respect to the other.

In a typewriting machine, the combination with a traveling carriage, of denominational stops supported b v said carriage and movable into and out of oper- .ativepositioln means, including plungers, individual to said stops, for controlling the position of said stops` said plungers having downwardly projecting fingers. a brake block mounted on said carriage` column steps, and a swinging trame mounted on va shaft extending transversely of the machine, said frame comprising a rack adapted for holding column stops in adjusted position thereon and a brake bar universal to said fingers` whereby operation ot' any of said plungers will move said swinging frame to bring the column stops thereon intoposition for engagement with an operatively positioned denominational stop. and concomitantly place said brake har in operative engagement with said brake block.
