Description
w. N. .PEIECE or wEST EoYLSToN, MASSACHUSETTS.
Letters Patent No. 83,307, dated October 20, 1868.
IMPROVEMENT IN WASH-B01142535.
w The Schedule referred to in these Letters Patent andmaki'ng part fthe same.
`lnow 'all man by these presen-ts:
That I, W. N. PEIRCE, of West Boylston, in the coun:-
ty of Worcester, and Commonwealth ofMassachusetts, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Clothes-Boilers and Sprayers; andI do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description of the same, reference being had to the accompanying l drawings, forming a part of this specification, in which--` Figure l represents a perspective view of my improved boiler and sprayer, with the cover open, and
Figure 2 represents a longitudinal vertical section of the same, 4with the cover down.
'Io enable those skilled in the art to .which my invention belongs, to make and use the same, I will proceed to `describe itmore in detail.
In the drawings, the main part of the boiler is marked A. B is the stationary part of the cover, and C the hinged part. Within the main part, A, is placed the spraying-device, D, the base, E, of which is made with a perforated convex top, F, and closed side and ends, G,
while a series of legs or tubes, a, is attached to the under side of the pertbrated top F, and extends down below the edges of the sides and ends, G, so as to rest upon the bottom of the boiler, whereby the lower edges of Ithe sides and ends, G,`are supported above the bot tom, H, ofthe boiler A, as fully indicated in lig. 2, a sufficient number of legs or tubes, a, being employed to support the sprayer-device, D, to keep it nom tipping or inclining to one side of the boiler A.
. The corners of the base G of the sprayer rest against the curved corners l; ofthe boiler A, and thus keep the parts in the relative positions shown in fig. 2, whereby an open space, c, is left between the endsand sides of the boiler, and the end and sides, G, of the base of the sprayer.
Frointhe centre ofthe perforated top F rises a tube, I,
made in this instance in tapering form, as shown inthe drawings. p
Upon the top of the-tube I is supported the sprayercap J which is4 made in oblong form, to correspond with the form of the boiler, as indicated in fig. 1.
The sprayer-cap J is supported upon the tube'I by means of the wire or strape, the lower ends of which are fastened to a ring, f, which is slipped upon the upper end ofthe tube I. (See g. 2.)
The operation is as follows: The boiler A is lled with water, until the 'sides and ends G of the sprayer are immersed, or nearly so, with water, when the clothes K, to be boiled or sprayed, are placed upon `the perforated top F, ets-indicated in fig. 2.
The boiler is now placed upon the stove or furnace, and, as steam is generated, it is forced up the pipe or tube I, together with water and suds, which, striking against the under side of the sprayer-cap J, are thrown or sprayed evenly over the top ofthe clothes K.
As the water and suds pass downthrough the clothes, the latter are cleansed and bleached by the operation, which may. be continued as' long as desired.
The water and suds, after-passing through the clothes', descend through the spaces c, to be reheated and thrown up again through the tube I, as before explained.
The steam passing through the holes g, in the top F, keeps the clothes hot and in proper condition to be acted upon by the suds or spray thrown down upon them by the spray-cap J.
As the legs or tubes a support the bottom or base of the spraying-device D above the bottom, H, `of the boiler, the return of the water is not retarded or'impeded, as it would be if the base sat directly upon the bottom ofthe boiler.
My improved clothes-boiler and sprayer has been put to a practical test, and found to work very successfully indeed.
.By making the top F convex, as shownin thedrawings, the water, as it leaches through the clothes, is conducted to the channels c, while the steam,'as it is generated at the bottom, H, of the boiler, is conducted or guided to the tube I, thus keeping upa regular and uniform circulation of the suds and water through thel clothing.
. Having described my improved clothes-boiler and sprayer,
` What I claim therein as'new, and of my invention,
. and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
The combination, with the boiler, ofthe inclined and perforated base F, and its central tube, supported upon legs or standards above the bottom of the boiler, in the manner described, so that a continuous space, c, shall intervene between the periphery of the base and the sides of the boiler, as and for the purposes set forth.
, W. N. PEIRCE.
