JOSEPH GRAF, OF PAT ERSON, NEW JERSEY.
ATTACHMENT FOR HAND-OPERATED BRUSHES.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Oct. 9, 1906.
Application filed February 17, 1906. Serial No 301,625.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that l, J OSEPH GRAF, a citizen of the United States, and a resident of Paterson, in the county of Passaic and State of New Jersey, have invented a new and Improved Attachment for Hand-Operated Brushes, of which the following is a full, clear, and exact description.
My invention relates to hand-operated brushes and the like, my more particular object being to provide the brush or analogous member with a shield movable by hand for the purpose of preventing the substance applied by the brush from discoloring or injuring other surfaces immediately adjacent to that being operated upon by the brush.
The invention relates more particularly to an attachment for hand-operated brushes of the kind used for spreading paint and varnish, the attachment being flexibly connected with the brush in such manner that the operator while using the brush may move the shield relatively to the same within certain limits.
Reference is to be had to the accompanying drawings, forming a part of this specification, in which similar characters of reference indicate corresponding parts in all the figures.
Figure 1 is a fragmentary plan view of a brush equipped with my attachment and cocupying its normal position. Fig. 2 is a somewhat similar view showing the screen as movable relatively to the brush, so as to stretch the tensile spring connecting the two together and Fig. 3 is a side elevation, partly in section, showing the screen occupying its normal position relatively to the brush.
The brush handle or stock is shown at 4 and the bristles at 5. Encircling the stock 4 is a spiral spring 6, this spring being of the socalled tensile type. It is connected at 7 directly with the brush handle or stock 4 and terminates at its other end in a head 8, which engages the annular shield 9. This shield is provided wth a plane portion 10 and with a flange 11. The flange 11 is used by the operator in moving or adjusting the shield 9. The arrangement of the parts is such that when the operator grasps the handle 4 and presses one or more of his fingers against the flange 11 the tensile spring 6 is stretched, as indicated in Fig. 2, so that the portion 10 moves into the position indicated in Fig. 2. Then as the brush is used the bristles 5 may be so manipulated as to paint a surface which is close up to another surface not to be painted, the portion 10 protecting the surface last mentioned and avoiding the possibility of any paint getting thereupon. For instance, in painting the woodwork of windows it may be desirable to prevent the paint from being applied upon the glass panes, and especially upon those portions thereof very close to the woodwork and where the removal of the paint without damage to the woodwork can occasion more or less difficulty. In this case any superfluous paint tending to get upon the glass is received by the inner face of the portion 107 The portion 10 is provided with a bead 10 for following angles without causing undue wear upon the portion 10.
The operation of my device is as follows: the operator grasps the handle 4 and manipug lates the brush after the manner of an ordinary paint brush. Coming, however, to some portion of the work which is immediately adjacent to a wall or surface which it is desired to protect from the action of the paint, the operator presses against the flange 11 and brings the portion 10 into the position indicated in Fig. 2. It will be noted that the spring 6 by allowing more or less movement between the handle 4 and the shield 9 allows the bristles 5 to move angularly within cer tain limits in order that the painting may properly be done and that this angular movement of the bristles 5 and of the handle 4 does not necessarily cause the movement of the shield 9 for the moment.
Having thus described my invention, I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent 1. The combination of a brush, a shield encircling the same and provided with a portion for preventing the application of paint from said brush to a predetermined surface, and a flexible connection from said brush to said shield.
2. The combination of a brush, a shield of sheet metal encircling the same and having one of its edges bent up in the form of a bead for lodging against woodwork or the like, said name to this specification in the presence of shield being;1 furtlliler pil'lovi'ied with a flange two subscribing witnesses.
rO eCtmg atera y t we rom 111 a p ane rossing the general direction of the length of JOSEPH GRAF' 5 the brush, and a flexible connection from said Witnesses:
shield to said brush. FRED. T. SOHWAEBLE,
In testimony whereof I have signed my CARL KRATTIGER.
