Be it known that we, JAMEs HOLLAND and WILLIAM G. WnLor-r, citizens of the United States, residing at (ironic, in the county of Strafford and State of New Hampshire, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Broom-Protectors, of which the following is a specification. I

This invention relates to broom protectors and has for its primary object the provision of a simple device which may be expeditiously applied to a broom of standard construction.

Another object of the invention is to provide a protector which will be positively locked on the broom from displacement but which may be adjusted when desired in order to change the position of the protectin member on the broom head.

The above and other objects of this invention will be in part described and in part understood from the following description of the present preferred embodiment of the invention taken in connection with the accompanying drawings, wherein:

In the drawings, in order to illustrate the application of this invention, a broom is shown which consists of the usual type of head 5 and handle 6, connected together in a manner well known in the art.

The protector consists of a head embracing band 7 which may be made of any suitable material, although a paper fiber or fiber board is preferred so as to prevent marring of furniture or other objects with which the broom may come in contact while in use. The band may be of any desired helght and thickness, but is preferably about the size shown in Fig. 1 of the drawings, in proportion to the size of the broom head, thereby preventing the latter from unduly spreadlng with obvious beneficial results.

A yoke member generally designated 8 is provided which consists of a pair of arms 9 which extend downwardly along the opposite'sides of the broom head 5andterminate a at a point approximately midway between the upper and lowermargins of the band 7 and are fixedly secured thereto in any deslred manner. The upper ends of the arms 9 are bent at right-angles and then reversely folded to provide a U-shaped yoke 10. The arms are depressed at their jointure with the yoke member 10 to provide eyes 11, through which a shaft 12 extends.

The handle 6 is held in engagement with the yoke member 10 by a locking lever generally designated 13. The locking lever consists of a strand of wire, the ends of which are looped and twisted together to provide a handle 14. The opposite terminal of the strand, from that which constitutes the handle 14, is spread outwardly and has a portion thereof rolled over the shaft 12 and engaged with the handle 6. The portion of the strand which engages the handle constitutes a locking lip 15 which yieldingly engages the handle by virtue of the upper end of the lever being engaged also with the broom handle at a point above the shaft 12.

It is to be understood that the wire from which the lever 13 is made is of a highly resilient character so that when it-is desired to disengage the broom from. the protector the lever 13 is first pulled outwardly from the broom handle and rotated on the shaft 12 which constitutes the axis of the lever. This movement flexes the lip 15, permitting the latter to move upwardly past the shaft 12.

The band 7 may be adjusted on the broom head so as to embrace any portion of the latter which may become weakened during use. After the band has been moved to the proper position on the broom head, the lever 13 is thrown upwardly into engagement with the broom handle, thereby causing downward movement of the lip 15 into the position' shown to advantage in Fig. 4.

It is to be understood that various changes may be made in this device, especially in details of construction, proportion and arrangement of parts without departing from the spirit and scope of the invention as covered by the appended claims.

What is claimed is:

1. A broom protector including a broom 7 looking lever pivotally mounted on said shalt to clamp the handle in said yoke.

2. A broom protector including a broom head embracing member, a strand of wire the free ends of which are engaged with said head embracing member, the intermediate portion of said strand being extended upwardly, bent at right angles and then reversely folded to provide a yoke member 10 which is adapted to receive the broom handle, and a lever pivotallyengaged with said yoke member to hold the broom handle in the latter.
