Description

n To ally'wwm it may-concern,-
@met i @tibia vWILLIAM R. lMl/iLOliIE, or MASON CITY, WEST VIRGINIA.
Letters Patent No. 83,295, dated October 20, 1868.
IMPROVEMENT IN SAFETY-VALVE.
The Schedule referred to in these Lettera Patentand making part of the same.
Be it known that I, WILLIAMB. MALONE, of Mason Oity, in the county of Mason, and State of AWest Virginia., have invented a new and useful Improvement in Safety-Valves for Steam-Boilers and I do hereby declare that. the following is afull, clear, and exact description thereof, which will enable others skilled in the art/to makeanduisetim'same, reference being had to'the accompanying drawings, forming part of this` specification, in which- Figure 1 represents a horizontal sectional elevation' vof a boiler with my improvement attached, and
Figure 2 represents a transverse section of the same. Similar letters of reference indicate like parts. The object of' this invention is to provide a means forautomatically checking the increase of steam in the boilers when f the desired vamount of pressure hasv been raised. f
It consists in amarrangement of f devices for conveying the steam or water which escapes through the y safety-valve, into the fire, for checking it, whereby vthe increase of steam is checked.
A represents a steam-boiler, and B the safety-valve, which is provided with a tube, 'running into the lboiler sufficiently to pass below the water-level.
D represents a tube connecting with the safety-valve, and communicating with the furnace, as shown in dot- -ted lines in figure, whereby the water or steam thrown dw-'Q ofi' through the safety-valve, ywhile the pressure of steam is greater than required, may be thrown upon the re, and suddenly, thereby, check it, to the extent that the steam will fall to the required pressure, when the iiow of water on the' lire will stop.
I propose, also, to confine the safety-valve lever and weight within a lock-up case, wherebythe control of the same is taken out of the hands of the engineer entirely. a v
Other pipes may also be attached, for receiving the escaping steam or water, and conveying itto any part of a building o1;I 'steamb0at, for extinguishing fires.
, The tube O is screwed through the boiler-sheet, and into the safety-valvetnbe, thus making a steam-tight joint without the aid of packing, as ordinarily usedfor connecting safety-valves.
Having thus described my invention,
I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patentv L The arrangement of the safety-valve B, exhaustpipeD, provided with pipe-connections communicating with the furnace, the extension-tube C, and boiler A, substantially as described.
W'M. R. MALONE.
