Description

UNITED STATES PATENT OEEIGE.
HORATIO ANDERSON, OF CHICAGO, ILLINOIS, ASSIGNOR TO IIIMSELF AND GEO. IV. CUSHING, OF SAME PLACE.
IMPROVEMENT IN STEAM-GENERATOR SAFETY-VALVES.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 58,934, (lated October 16, 18Go.
Fig. 2, a partial section ot the valve and connected parts thereof; Fig. 3, an inside view ot' flange for containing valve-seat and attaching to boiler.
Similar letters of reference indicate like parts.
rlhis invention is designed to furnish a safety-valve to be attached to locomotive, marine, or stationary boilers for preventing explosions by an excessive pressure 'ot' steam. It is adlinstable to whatever pressure is deemed safe,
and is secured to the inside of the dome or boiler in such manner that it cannot be altered or tampered with by an engineer or any other person, and will always act promptly in discharging au excess of steam, if it should rise above the point ot' safety.
A is a iiange to be bolted and packed steamtight upon the dome or shell of a boiler, in the center of which is litted the valve-seat a. bis a stand or bearing on the inside of the flange A, which supports the capsular spring c, and through which passes the valvestem d. B is the valve-a circular plate or beveled disk fitted to the seat a upon the outside of the ilange A.
The stem tl screws into the hub c ot1 the valve B, and on the hub or boss e are guides ffff in the valve-scat a. Around the stem d and supported on the stand b is wound the capsular spring c, which is secured to the stem by the washer g and the jam-nuts h` hf'.
The tension of the spring is regulated, aceordin g to the required pressure of steam, by setting up the jam-nuts h It', and when set the valve is fastened to the inside ot' the boiler, secure against any interference with it by the engineer or other parties.
When the steam rises above the degree ot' pressure allowed, it forces up the valve by the contraction of the spring c and escapes, thus aliording a compact, durable, and reliable safety-valve.
Having described the construction and operation ot' my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
1. The capsular spring c, combined with the valve B, the valvestem d, and the iam-nuts h It', constructed and arranged as and for the purposes herein described.
2. The tlangeA and stand b, combined with the valve B, and the capsular spring c, constructed and arranged as and for the purposes herein specified.
IIORATIO ANDERSON.
