PRESSURE-CONTROLLING DEVICE vFOR BOILERS.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, JOHN D. VVALsH, a citizen of the United States, residing at Lockport, in the county of Niagara and State of New York, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Pressure-Controlling Devices for Boilers; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appert-ains to make and use the same.
My invention relates to improvements in pressure-controlling devices for boilers.
More particularly, the object of my invention, is to provide an improved means for maintaining a constantcontrol in the boiler, while heating is done at atmospheric pres sure, the devices being particularly applicable to individual house heating boilers.
It is a well known fact, that for many years, various types of damper regulators and safety valves have been utilized in connection with steam boilers, and it is my present purpose to accomplish the functions of both a damper regulator and safety valve in one, simply constructed device, which is applicable readily to any form of steam boiler.
In addition to securing absolute and perfeet control of the steam supply, by my present invention, the system is entirely free from air, and possesses marked advantages in its readiness of installation and general adaptability.
With these several objects and advantages in View, my invention includes the novel construction and arrangement of parts about to be described in detail and pointed out more specifically in the appended claims.
In the drawings, forming a part of this specification and adapted to be read in conjunction therewith, and in which like letters of reference refer to correspondingparts in the different views, Figure I is a vertical sectional view of my improved form of damper regulator and safety valve, and Fig. II is a top plan 'view of a portion of the structure disclosed in Fig. I.
Referring more particularly to the drawings, A designates a one piece metal casting, which, with its cooperating parts about to be described, may be positioned at any convenient point on a boiler. Suitably connected to the casting A are pipes b and c, which connect respectively with the water space of the boiler and the steam space of Specification of Letters Patent.

D is a partition separating the chambers B and C, and E is a downwardly projecting battle plate in the chamber B, for directing the flow of water properly, into the upper part of the chamber B.
F is a diaphragm, of rubber or other suitable flexible material, held in position by means of the plate G which is secured to the casting A in any suitable manner. Attached to the diaphragm F is a casting I-I having an upstanding collar with opening it therein.

Mounted within the casting A is a cupshaped seat J, within which is positioned the safety valve K. The valve K carries the stem is having the opening 70 therein. The operation of the invention, will readily be apparent, and is as follows: Normally, water from the water space of the boiler passes through the pipe 6 into the chamber B, steam filling the chamber C from the steam space of the boiler through pipe 0, and when there is no pressure indicated, the parts remain inactive, as shown. If the damper regulator is set to operate the dampers at five ounces pressure, and this point is reached, the water will be forced up in the chamber B against the diaphragm F, moving the same, together with the casting H and lever I, and thereby closing the damper on the boiler, and checking the fire. Should the boiler generate more steam than the radiators condense, and the pressure goes up to eight or ten ounces, the further movement of the casting H will cause engagement of the lever L by the projection. h,

Having thus fully described the construction and operation of my invention, what I desire to secure by Letters Patentand claim is: a
1. In a combined damper regulator and safety valve,.the combination with a casting having a water chamber and steam chamber therein communicating with the water and steam spaces respectively of a boiler, of a diaphragm in the water chamber and controlled by the pressure therein, a damper lever connected to said diaphragm, a safety valve in the steam chamber, and means whereby said safety valve is controlled by the aforementioned diaphragm.
2. In a combined damper regulator and safety valve, the combination with a single casting having a water chamber and steam chamber therein communicating with the water and steam spaces respectively of a boiler, a damper operating lever, instrumentalities controlled by the pressure within the water chamber for moving said damper operating lever, a safety valve for the steam chamber, and means for operating said safety valve from the aforesaid instrumentalities controlling the damper operating lever.
3. In a combined damper regulator and safety valve, the combination with a single casting having a water chamber and steam chamber therein, pipes leading from said chambers to the water space and steam space of the boiler respectively, a diaphragm mounted above said water chamber, a casting attached to said diaphragm and having an opening therein, a damper operating lever pivoted to said last mentioned casting, a safety valve for closing said steam chamber and having a stem with an opening therein, a lever pivoted to the first mentioned casting and extending through the opening in said stem, the free end of the lever engaging the aforesaid opening in the casting carried by the diaphragm above mentioned.
