SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 663,158, dated December 4, 1900.
Application filed May 31,1900.
To all whom, it may concern.-
Bejit known that 1, WILLIAM H. DOWNING, a citizen of the United States, residing at Wittens, in the county of Monroe and State of Ohio, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Gas-Regulators for Steam- Boilers; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
This invention relates to fluid-pressure regulators, diaphragm-lever, and particularly to a gas-governor and boiler-pressure regulator.
One object of the invention is to provide an improved device connected to a boiler for regulating the amount of gas fed to the furnace in exact proportion to the amount of steam needed and by means of which when the water inthe boiler falls to a certain level the supply of gas is automatically cut d.
A further object of the invention is to provide a peculiar trigger mechanism operated by an expansion-pipe to release the gas-valves, and thereby cut off the gas.
A still further object of the invention is to provide a novel and peculiar connection between the valve -stem and the diaphragm, whereby the pressure on the latter from the boiler will operate the said stem.
Other objects, advantages, and improved results accruing from the special construc tion and arrangement of parts hereinafter disclosed will be found in the practical application of the device.

The same numeral references denote the same parts throughout the several views of the drawings.
The device is connected to the boiler 1 by a pipe 2, leading from the diaphragm-chamber 3 to the short gage-pipe at on the boiler. The expansion-pipe 5 extends from the chamber 3 up above the device and is provided with a cock 6. Depending from the top of the said pipe is a rod 7, having its end connected to the trigger-arm 8, so that the movement of the pipe will be imparted to the trigger-arm and release it. The trigger-arm Sis pivoted at 9 to ears 10, projecting from the side of the spring-barrel 11, and engages the trigger-pawl12, which has a seat 13 and is pivoted into wings 14: of said barrel, so that the seat will lie between the said wings. A lever 15 is pivoted in the ears 10 and reaches across the center of the barrel between the said wings to engage the seat of the triggerpawl when the latter is set. The barrel has slots 16 and an inner shoulder 17, and between a top plate 18 and a bottom yoke 19 a spiral spring 20 is held in the barrel and compressed by the lever 15 and set-screw 21, which is also operated to vary the tension of the spring. The said yoke projects through the slots 16 and has a central screw 15, carrying a disk 22, engaging the diaphragm 23, the latter being held by the barrel-flange 2d and a like flange of the diaphragm-chamber, and directly beneath said chamber is a screw-lug 26, having a recess 27. The shoulders 16 of the slots 16 stop the upward movement of the yoke.
The valve-casing 28 has a gas-inlet 29, provided with an inlet-pipe 29, and a gas-outlet 30, having an outlet-pipe 30 to the furnace, and is provided with a partition 31, which has top and bottom valve- seats 32 and 33, respectively. The valve-case is screwed to the lug 26, and centrally below the valve-seat 33 it is provided with a screw-threaded opening 31, to which is attached the hanger, having a central bore 35, apertures 36, and depending arms 37. The valve-stem 38, having top and bottom valves 39 and 4E0, extends through the bore 35 and through a packing-gland 41, and its lower end is provided with a flanged collar 42, between which flanges the forked circular bearing ends l3 of the fulcru m-levers 44 work, the other ends of the levers 44 being pivoted to the ends of the depending arms 37. Between the bearing ends 43 and the pivoted ends of the levers 44 is pivoted thereto the lower ends of the connecting-rods 4-5, which extend through the apertures 36 and through the yoke 19, where they are adjustably secured by nuts A6, so that the throw of the levers 44, and hence the travel of the valverod, may be adjusted and varied as desired.
In operating oil-wells the pressure of the gas is variable, and it is therefore most desirable to have a device which will regulate and control and automatically feed the gas to the furnace in proportion to the amount of steam required, and in doing this the operation is as follows: When the gas is turned on, (the device being as shown in Fig. 3,) it passes into the valve-casing through the valve 40 and through the outlet 30 to the furnace or fire-box of the boiler 1. As the pressure of steam rises in the boiler it forces the dia-- phragm upward, so as to gradually close the valves sufficiently to hold the steam at a certain pressure, and any variation in the pressure of the steam operates the valves either for the purpose of opening or closing. When the pressure of gas is variable, the diaphram operates the valve-stem through the yoke, connecting-rods,and fulcrum-leversand opens or closes the valves in proportion to the pressure of the gas. If the water in the boiler drops below the point where the expansionpipe is connected to the boiler, the water in the pipe runs back into the boiler and steam takes its place, expanding the pipe, which by means of the rod 7 lifts the trigger-arm 8, and
the expansion of the spring 20 will dislodge the lever 15 under the upward pressure of the diaphragm, while the yoke and its connected parts to the valve-stem will carry the latter up and instantly close the valves, so as to shut off the gas entirely until relighted.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim asnew, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
1. In a gas-regulator, the combination, with the barrel, a spring contained therein, a lever having one end pivoted to the barrel and extending across the top thereof with the other end left free, the diaphragm operated by the spring, the gas-valves actuated by the diaphragm, and a set-screw reaching through the lever and engaging said spring, of the trigger-pawl pivoted to the barrel, and the trigger-arm pivoted to the barrel and having a free end to engage the pawl and hold it in engagement with the free end of the said lever.
2. The combination, with a gas-regulator having a barrel, a spiral spring in the barrel,
a yoke slidable in the barrel against the spring and projecting outside the barrel, a diaphragm operating against the yoke, and the gas-valves actuated by the diaphragm, of the trigger mechanism upon the barrel and connected with the spring to o erate the latter, and means connecting t e projecting ends of the yoke with the regulator-valve stem to operate the valves thereof.
' 3. The combination, with a gas-regulator having a barrel and an expansion-pipe, a spring in the barrel,'a diaphragm operated by the spring, the gas-valves actuated by the diaphragm, a yoke slidable in the barrel against the spring and having ends projecting outside the barrel, and the trigger mechanism connected to the spring, of means connecting the projecting ends of the yoke with the valve-stem of the regulator upon the outside of the latter so that the movement of the expansion-pipe imparted to the trigger mechanism will operate the said valvestem.
4. In a gas-regulator for steam-boilers, the combination of the valve-casing having a diaphragm-chamber secured thereto, steam-passages to and from the chamber, a diaphragm above the passages, a barrel secured over said chamber, a yoke in the barrel having a disk engaging the diaphragm, a spiral spring in the barrel operated by the yoke, the trigger mechanism operated by an expansion-pipe to release the spring, the hanger depending from the said casing, the valve stem working through the hanger and having valves and provided with a flanged collar, fulcrum-levers pivoted to the said hanger and engaging the collar, and the connecting-rods pivoted to the said levers and adj ustably secured to the said yoke to operate the levers and to vary the throw of the valve-stem.
5. Thecombination, with the barrel having a trigger-controlled spring therein, a yoke slidable in the barrel against the spring and having a depending disk, a valve-stem carrying valves and terminating in a collar, and the valve-casing, of the chamber having a depending screw-lug and connecting the barrel and the valve-casing, a diaphragm in the chamber engaged bV the said disk, and the rods and levers connecting the valve-stem collar with the yoke. g
6. A gas-regulator. for steam-boilers, comprising a barrel having opposite slots, a spring in the barrel, a lever pivoted to and working across the top of the barrel and having a setscrew engaging the spring, a trigger mechanism pivoted to the barrel and holding the le ver in position to compress the spring, a valvecasing, a valve-stem carrying valves in the casing and terminating at one end in a flanged collar, a diaphragm-chamber incommunication with the boiler and provided with a screw-lug connecting the barrel with said casing and having an expansion-pipe, a diaphragm in the chamber operated by the spring, a yoke slidable Vertically against said In testimony whereof I affix my signature in presence of two witnesses.
