CHARLES E. ROTH, or NEW YORK, N. Y.
COMBINAT'ION-TQOL- Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Oct. 9, 1906.
ioplicationfilecl May 23,1904. Serial No. 209.257.
2'0 all whom, it may concern;
Be it known that I, CHARLES E. ROTH, a citizen of the United States, residing at New York city, in the county of New York and State of New York, have invented new and useful Improvements in Combination-Tools, of which the following is a specification,
My invention relates to combination-tools and the object of the same is to provide a tool having two members which may be operated together and which may be readily disconnected to permit the use of either member separately.
In the accompanying drawings, Figure 1 is a side elevation of a tool made in accordance with my invention. Fig. 2 is a top plan view. Fig. 3 is a detail view illustrating the construction of the pivotal connection of the two members of the tool.
The numeral 1 designates one member of the tool, which has formed thereon a hammer-head 2, a pincer-j aw 3, a chisel 4, an im pact-lug 5 to receive the blows of a mallet or hammer when the chisel is used, positioned at the base of the hammer-j aw and extending vertically in a line with the tool on the lower end of the handle a corrugated pipe-wrench jaw 6, the wire-cutter jaws 7, and the handle A. The other member 1 has formed integral therewith a hatchet 8, a pincer-j aw 3, a screw-driver 9, the wrench-jaw 6 and the handle B.
The members 1 and 1 are pivotally connected together by a joint, which will permit the two members to be disconnected Whenever the character of the work to be performed by the tool may be facilitated by a simple handle. As shown in Figs. 1 and 3 the member 1 is provided at the pivotal point 10 with a spline 11, which extends between the jaws 6 6, while at the opposite or lower face of the pivot a spline 12 is formed, positioned substantially diametrically to the spline or projection 11. These two splines 11 12 are of such length that when the handles A B are swung away from each other to the full extent the two members may be separated; but when the two handles are brought together the splines 11 12 slide in grooves 11 12, formed in line therewith in the oint portion of the member 1*. It will thus be seen that the two members of the tool are operative together unless they are separated to the full extent and that when thus extended they may be separated for independent use. When the member 1 is to be used as a chisel, the impact-point 5 may be struck by a mallet, and the hammer is also available for any purpose desired. The member 1 may be used as a hatchet or as a screw-driver.
Having thus described my invention, what I desire to secure by Letters Patent and claim is' A compound tool of the character described having handle members detachably and pivotally connected together, and one of said handle members formed with a chisel at its free end, and at the other end formed with an impact-lug 5, positioned at the base of the hammer-j aw and extending Vertically in a line with the tool on the lower end of the handle to receive blows when the chisel is used.
