citizen of the-United States of America. and
a resident of Philadelphia, county of Philadelphia, Stateof Pennsylvania, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Massage Devices, of which the following is a specification, reference being had to the acing the flesh or roller devices for merely rolling over .the flesh. In hand manipulation of flesh for massage purposes it is common to take up a pieceof-flesh between the thumb and the finger and work or knead the flesh by I working the thumb and finger backward and forward.
It is the main object of my present invention to produce-a'machine which shall as "closely as'possible imitate this hand manipulation of the flesh; and to this end I provide a plurality of massage members for grasping the flesh and means for so operating the members as to knead or work the flesh between them. v
- In the preferred form of my invention the gras ing members are rollers which rotate slow y in a direction toward each other, so as to pick up and hold the flesh, and I provide '35 means for imparting contravibrating movements to the said rollers while they are rotat- "ing, these contravibrating movements being very rapid relatively to the movement of rotation thereof and being through but a small arc of a circle. In a machine which I have' designed for this purpose and in which my invention is embodied the rollers rotate toward each other'at about the 'speed of one hundred revolutions to the minute, while oscillatory movements are simultaneously imparted thereto through one-eighth of a revolution two thousand times a minute, the said oscillations being in directions opposite to each other;

the device itself being considerably smaller than the device as illustrated.
- The massage members in the device herein ers shafts 7' and 8, carried by arms 9 and 10, connected to sleeves 11 and 12. The sleeves 11 and 12 are mounted upon a stationary arbor 5 and 6, mounted upon 13, secured to and carried by a box or frame 14. The sleeves 1 1 and'12 are mountedloosely upon the said arbor, whereby the rollers 5 and 6, carried by the arms 9 and lOsecured thereto, may move freely. backward and forward toward and away from each other. Springs 15 tend to press the saidrollers with a yielding pressure'toward each other, but
permit the said rollersto be forced apart against such yielding pressure.
The box or frame-su port'14 is provided with a handle 16,. by w -ch the device as a whole may be conveniently manipulated, and a drive-shaft 17 passes through the said handle from the BXtBIlOI. thereof to the interior of the said box. This shaft may be driven by any suitable meansas, for instance, by a flexible shaft connection with aunotor of any- I oo kind. At its end within the box the said shaft is provided with a drive-pinion 18,
which engages a spur-gear 19, loosel mounted upon the stationary arbor '13. hisgear conveniently has along hub, so that itmay have a long bearing on the said arbor, and the. said hub is also. employed for the purpose of supporting another gear-wheel 20,
which is rigldly fastened thereto. The, said gear-wheel v20 takes in with a spur gear221 upon the shaft 7, which carries the roller 5.
The shaft 7 penetrates to the interiorof the box for this purpose,
as shown in Fig. 5, whe're and the said box is conveniently slotted,

The spurcar 19 has secured to the face thereof eve gear-teeth 22, which intermesh with a bevel gear-pinion 23, arranged to'rotate upon a stationary stud at ri ht angles to the axis of the arbor 13, the beveled ear-wheel 23 also intermeshing with another eveled gear-wheel 24,- mounted to turn loosely upon the hub of thespur-gear 19.-

I will now describe the means for imparting the vibrating movements to the rollers, such movements being, it will be remembered,
