To all whom it may concern.-
Be it known that I, ELZEAR MICHAUD, a subject of the King of Great Britain, residing at and whose post-office address is Montreal, district of Montreal, Province of Quebec, Dominion of Canada, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Head and Back Rests for Beds and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
This invention relates to new and useful improvements in head and back rests adapted to be applied to beds, the object of this invention being to provide a self-contained device for that purpose which may be assembled for use and readily applied to wood and metal beds without boring or otherwise 'mar-.

Fig. 3 is a detaclied erspective view illustrating one of the rail l ateS. Fig. 4 is a section on line 4 4 of Fig. 3, and Fig. 5 is an edge view of one of the rocker-arms of the device.
Referring to the parts, 1 re resents bedrails, upon which rest the rail-p ates '2, which are provided, respectively,with the depending flanges 3, 4, and 5 and with the upwardlyprojecting serrated segmental flange 6 and also, if desired, with the intermediate de pending locking-flange 7, whichis adapted to end under a flange 1 of a metallic bedframe when the device is used on a metal bed. Projecting through the flanges 4 are pivots 8, upon which are rockably supported the rocker-arms 9, which arms 9 are provided at their lower portions with the inwardly and downwardly bent portions 10, at the lower extremity of which are the pins 11. Said pivots are preferably in the form of bolts which pass under the bed-rails, spanning the space between contiguous flanges and serving as locking means to hold the plates against vertical displacement, though permitting the said plates to slide longitudinally of the side rails of the bed upon which the attachment is placed. The arms 9 are provided with the inwardly-projecting perforated lugs 12, through which pass the spring-actuated rod 13, the lower end of which is serrated to correspond with and engage the serrations 14 of the segment 6. A spring 15 surrounds the rods 13 and bears against the thickened portion 16 to force said rods downwardly, so that the serrated head portion 17 of said rod will engage with the serrations 14. The upper portions 18 of the rocker-arms 9 are recessed, and in said recesses are placed the lower end ,of the frame 19. The recessed portion 18 may be screw-threaded for engagement with said frame. Secured by the clips 20 are levers 21, which engage the rods 13 and by means of which the head portion 17 of said rods 13 may be lifted to release said head portion from engagement with theseg- 4 ment 6. Connected with the perforated flanges 5 are springs 22, to the opposite end of which are connected adjusting-links 23,
which links are provided with a series of notches 24, which notches are adapted to engage the pins 11 to connect said springs "22 with the depending portions 10 of,the rockerarms 9, and it will be,evident-"that the tension of the springs 22 may be readily adjusted by means of the talie1 uplinks 23. Extending longitudinally of the plate '2 is a rib 2*, which serves as a reinforce for said rib.
Owing to the fact that the rocker-arms and the springs are both connected to depending flanges of the plates 2, it is evident that the device herein illustrated is a self-contained head and back rest which may be readily applied to bed-rails whether said rails are of wood or metal, and when used with metalrails the depending flanges 7 may be bent inwardly, as shown in Figs. 3 and 4, to prevent springin of the plates 2 under stress of the IOC springs uring operation of the device. As this device is intended for use especially in hospitals the manipulating-levers 21 are carlied to the upper extremity of the frame 19,
so as to be out of reach of the patient occu- I05 pying the bed under normal conditions.
What I claim is I 1. In a detachable head and back rest, raillates having depending flanges, a serrated ocking-segment, integral with one of said no rail-plates, a pivotally-supported frame and locking means carried by said frame.
2. In a detachable head and back rest, railplates having integral depending flanges, springs connected with some of said flanges, a pivotally-supported frame, depending extensions on said frame, cooperating with said springs and means for locking said frame in different positions.
3. In a detachable head and back rest, railplates having integral depending flanges, springs connected with some of said flanges, a pivotally-supported frame, a perforated lug on said frame, integral extensions on said frame, means connecting said extensions with said springs, a locking-plate, and a locking-rod projecting through said' perforated lugs, said rod being adapted to engage with said plate.
4. In a bed attachment for supporting a head and back rest, rail members having integral depending flanges, springs connected with some of said flanges, a rockable supporting member pivotally mounted on said rail members, and an extension on said supporting member connected with said springs.
5. In a detachable head and back rest, railplates, springs connected at one end with said plates, a frame pivotally supported by said plates, extensions on said frame projecting below the pivots thereof, means for connecting the springs with said extensions and means for locking said frame in a plurality of positions.
6. In a detachable head and back rest, railplates having integral depending flanges, springs connected with some of said flanges, recessed adjusting-links connected with said springs, a frame pivotally connected with said plates, locking means carried by said frame, and extensions on said frame with which said links are adapted to enga e.
7. In a detachable head and bac rest, a pair of rail-plates, flanges depending from said plates, a serrated segment integral with one plate, a frame pivotally supported by said flanges, a perforated lug on said frame, a reciprocatory rod guided by said lu and a locking-pawl on said rod, in combination with extensions on said frame extending below the pivots thereof and springs connected with said extensions at one end and with flanges near the opposite end of said plate at their opposite ends.
8. In a detachable head and back rest for beds, slidable rail-plates, integral flanges on said plates, springs comiected with said plates, a rockable supporting-frame having depending extensions and means connecting said extensions with said s rin s.
9. In a detachable head an back rest for beds, flanged raillates adapted to rest upon the side rails of a ed, a rockable supportingframe pivotally mounted upon flanges of said rail-plates, springs connected with said rockable frame below the pivots thereof and also with said side plates, and means for locking said rockable frame in different positions.
10. In a detachable head and back rest for beds, flanged rail-plates adapted to rest upon the side rails of a bed, a rockable supportingframe pivotally mounted upon flanges of said rail-plates, springs connected with said rockable frame below the pivots thereof and also with said side plates, and means for adjusting the tension of said s rings.
11. In a detachab e back and head rest for beds, rail-plates having integral depending flanges adapted to span the side rails of a bed, springs connected with some of said flanges, a pivotally-supported frame carried by said flanges, depending extensions on said frame, cooperating with said springs and means for adjusting the tension of said springs.
12. In a detachable head and back rest adapted to be placed upon the side rails of a bed, rail-plates having integral flanges projecting at an angle, to said plates, springs connected with some of said flanges, a rockable frame mounted on some of said flanges,
locking means adapted to secure said frame in different positions and means for connecting said frame with said springs.
13. In a detachable head and back rest for beds adapted to be mounted on the side rails of said beds, the combination comprising a rockable frame, slidable rail-plates on which said frame is pivotally mounted, means for locking said frame in diflerent positions, springs connected with said rail-plates and with said frame and means for locking said rail-plates against vertical displacement on said side rails.
14. In an attachment adapted to be secured upon the side rails of a bed, slidable rail-plates, means for locking said plates, against vertical movement but permitting them to slide longitudinally of the side rails of the bed, a rockable frame carried by said rail-plates, springs connecting said frame with said railplates and means for locking said frame in different positions.
15. In a detachable head and back rest adapted to be secured upon the side rails of a bed; the combination comprising flanged rail-plates, springs connected with some of the flanges of said rail-plates, a rockable frame mounted on said plates, means for locking said frame in different positions, and means for connecting said springs with said frame.
16. In a detachable head and back rest for beds adapted to be mounted upon the side rails of a bed, the combination comprising flanged and slidable rail-plates, springs connected with some of the flanges of said plates, a rockable frame mounted upon said plates, a spring-actuated reciprocatory locking member cooperating with serrations on one of the flanges of one of the rail-plates and means connecting said springs with said frame.
17. In a detachable head and back rest adapted to be slidably mounted upon the side rails of a bed, slidable rail-plates havin integral flanges, a rockable frame mounte on said rail-plates means for locking said frame in difierent positions, depending extensions on said frame, springs connected with flanges on said rail-plates and means connecting said springs with said depending extensions of the frame.
18. In a detachable head and back rest adapted to be mounted upon the side rails of a bed, flanged rail-plates adapted to rest on said side rails, means for locking said plates against vertical displacement, a rockable back and head rest frame having depending extensions, springs connected with said extensions and with flanges of said rail-plates, and means for locking said frame in different positlons.
