SPRING BED-BOTTOM. r

SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 397,324, dated February 5, 1889.

To all whom it may concern.-

Be it known that I, EDWARD YEOMAN, of Chicago, in the county of Cook and State of Illinois, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Spring Bed -Bottoms; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it pertains to make and use it, reference being had to the accompanying drawing, which forms part of this specification.

My inventionrelatcs to an improvement in spring bed-bottoms; and it consists in the upon the strips 1) may be varied at will.. As

combination of the metallic strips, which extend parallel wit-h each other, and which are connected together in pairs at their free ends by means of triangular-shaped castings, connecting-rods which extend across and connect the castings together, so as to prevent lateral movement, and the swiveled tightening-rods, which are connected to the bed-bottom at one end and to the triangular castings at the other, the springs placed upon the strips, and the woven bottom, all of which will be more fully described hereinafter.

The object of my invention is to provide a cheap and simple support for the springs, which are to be placed under the woven bottom, and which are adjustabl-y supported in position, so that the bottom can be given any desired amount of elasticity.

The accompanying drawing represents a perspective of a bed-bottom embodying my invention.

A represents the frame, to which the wovenwire bottom 13, of any suitable construction, is secured in the usual manner. To the under side of the end cross-piece, C, of the frame are secured the ends of a series of metallic strips, D, which extend parallel with each other, and upon the tops of which the springs F are placed. The ends of the strips are connected together in pairs by means of the triangular castings G, to which the screw-rods H are fastened. with heads at one end and with screw-threads at the other, and the screw-threaded ends are screwed into the swiveled links I, connected to the rods J, which are secured at their outer ends to the cross-piece L of the frame A. In order to prevent the strips D from moving sidewise at their free ends, the triangular castings G are connected together by the cross rods or wires 0, which are fastened in These rods H are provided.

By means of the swivels I the strips D can be tightened in pairs to any desired degree in order to regulate the amount of tension of the springs F. \Vhere the strips D are allowed to sag down slightly the springs will not bear against the under side of the bottom 13 with such force, and hencethe amount of elasticity given to the bottom can be regulated at will. The strips upon one side of the bed may be left comparatively loose, while those upon the opposite may be kept taut, according to the wishes of those using the bed.

The number of springs F or their action here shown, the springs are arranged upon the strips just under the center of the bed; but this arrangement may be varied at will.

The swivels I are arranged at one end of the frame, so that they can be readily reached by inserting the hand under one end of the bed, and thus any one of them operated without the slightest trouble. lVhere a heavy and a light person sleep together, the strips D should be drawn much tauter on the side upon which the heavy person sleeps than upon the other, and hence each pair of strips D is provided with a separate swivel, which is placed where it can be readily reached.

Having thus described my invention, I claim 1, The combination of the frame A, the woven bottom 13, and springs F with the strips D, castings G, to which the strips are secured, the rods 0, which connect the castings laterally, and the adjustable rods which connect the castings with the frame in a line with the strips, and which rods are located at one end of the bed, substantially as shown.

The combination of the frame A, the woven bottom, the supporting-strips, and the springs placed between the bottom and the strips, with the triangular castings to which the strips are secured in pairs, the adjustable rods H J, and the swivels I, the rods and swivels being located at one end of the bed, and the rods J being secured at their outer ends to the end rail of the frame, substan tially as shown.
