UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
GARMENT-SUPPORTING DEVICE.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Sept. 18, 1906.
Application filed October 28, 1905. Serial No. 284,881.
To all whom it may concern.-
Be it known that I, JAMES L. UBELLAR, a citizen of the United States, residing at Kankakee, in the county of Kankakee and State of Illinois, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Garment-Supporting Devices and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, and to the letters of reference marked thereon, which form a part of this specification.
This invention relates to new and useful improvements in devices for supporting cuffs, sleeves, socks, &c.; and the object of the invention is to produce a simple and efficient means whereby when the device is applied to a cuff the latter may be adjusted to the length of the sleeve and may have a lateral freedom without inconveniencing the wearer and when applied for supporting socks affording a device which will not inconvenience or irritate the surface of the leg adjacent to the location of the holder.
My invention comprises various details of construction and arrangements of parts, which will be hereinafter fully described and then specifically defined in the appended claims.
I illustrate my invention in the accompanying drawings, in which- Figure 1 is a view showing my device as applied for supporting socks. Fig. 2 is an enlarged detail view of the supporting device, and Fig. 3 is a View of a slight modification of the supporter. Fig. 4 is a detail sectional view on line 4 4 of Fig. 2, and Fig. 5 is a sectional view on line 5 5 of Fig. 2.
Reference now being had to the details of the drawings by letter, A and A designate two spring-clips, each made of a single piece of metal and bent upon itself at substantially its longitudinal center, and one end of said clip A is enlarged, forming a circular outlined extension beyond its other end and is provided with a button B, which when the device is used for a cuif-holder may be inserted through the buttonhole of a cuff and when used for supporting garments of various kinds affords means over which a fold of the garment may be placed when gripped by the jaw D, formed at the other end of the clip A. Said j aw D is formed by bending the spurs or teeth at substantially right angles to the length of the shank portion which is integral with said jaw, and the loop E is mounted over the shank portions of the two arms of the clip A and is adapted when pushed toward its ends to cause said spurs or teeth to grip and hold a garment against said circular outlined extension of the clip. The other spring-clip A is of the same general construction as the clip A excepting in the formation of the ends of the clip, in which one end is slightly widened, as at K, while the other end of the clip A is of similar construction to that at one end of the clip A and comprises three spurs which are inwardly turned, and when so bent the end carrying said spurs is slightly concaved, forming eflicient means for gripping a fold of a garment to which the device is to be applied. In order to hold the ends of the spring-catch A together, I provide a sliding loop Q, which is similar in con struction to the loop described, which is mounted upon the clip A. Each of said spring-clips is pivotally connected to a link N, whereby each clip may have an independent motion in opposite directions.
In Fig. 3 of the drawings I have shown a slight modification of my invention in which the link is made up of two parts S S, connected together by means of a pin R, thereby giving a more extended lateral or edgewise movement to the two clips than would be afforded by the construction shown in Fig. 1 of the drawings.
From the foregoing it will be noted that by the provision of my improved garment-supporting device simple and eflicient means is afforded for holding either cuffs, socks, or other articles of apparel.
Having thus fully described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
A cuff-holder or sock-supporter comprising two clips, each formed of a resilient piece of. holding the jaws upon the clips together, as metal bent upon itself, a link to which said set forth. 10 clips are pivotally connected, one end of one In testimony whereof I hereunto fix my of said clips being extended beyond its other signature in the presence of two witnesses.
end forming a fiat disk, having a button, its JAMES L. UBELLAR. other end having spurs projecting at right Witnesses: angles therefrom and concaved at its end, EDWARD TEED,
the other clip having jaws, and means for E. W. LEOOUR.
