Description

PATENT GEEICE.
JAMES HARRISON, OF JAMESTOVN, NEV YORK.
IMPROVEMENT IN DENTAL HYDRAULIC CUPS.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 8,312, dated August 26, 1851.
To all whom t may concern:
Be it known that I, JAMES HARRISON, of the village of Jamestown, in the county of Chautauqua and State of New York, have invented a new and useful Machine called the Dental Hydraulic Cup; and I do hereby declare that the following Vis a full, clear, and exact description of the construction and operation 'ot` the same, reference being had to the annexed drawing, making a part of this specilication.
My machine is made of silver or some similar material; and it consists of a fountain-pipe, marked Z9 in the annexed drawing, which is attached to the plate marked c (under plate) and is inserted through the same; also, the dischargingpipe marked e is inserted through plate c immediately under the fountain-pipe l). On the inner side of platee and immediately below the lower end of the pipe b is the division-plate d, (center plate,')
soldered at the upper edge and sides to the 'plate c ,to be lett open and unconnected at thelower edge only. The platef(upper plate) and plate c are soldered arou nd the outer edge lo a wire. A space of about one-eighth of an inch is left betWeenplates d andfand about the same space between plates d and c, which altogether constitute a perfect instrument, (the said plates being united in a concave form,) marked No. l in theannexed drawing, and is calculated to be applied to the upper jaw of the mouth, into which concave the material to be impressed is placed an d there held until the impression is perfected. Then at the head of the fountain-'pipe marked l; letY water to beeswax and warm water to a preparation of plaster-of-paris. The object accomplislied thereby is to harden and render more firm the material impressed before it is withdrawn from the jaw. i
My machine to be applied to the lower jaw is in all respects like the one above described, (the form ot the plates being slightly varied, so as to apply properly to the same,) except the fountain-pipe b and the discharging-pipe e are inverted, as seen in the plate marked No. 2. in the annexed drawing.
Numbers 3 and 4 in the annexed drawings represent my machine No. l divided longitudinally in the center and are calculated to show the course of the current of water, the opening of the pipes, the connection of the same tothe plates, and the vacancies between the plates.
The drawing marked 7L represents plates c and (l united.
The gate marked g in the drawing is to be used onlyin takingimpressions of the upper jaw. and is attached to the lower edge of the plate marked j'by means of a hinge, and when applied to the mouth is turned into the plate fand holds the material to be impressed in its place and prevents the same from penetrating into the throat. It has no connection with the course or discharge of the water.
That I claim as my invention is-.
l. The construction of said machine of two or more plates with vacancies between the same and with pipes annexed thereto.
2. The application of water or any suitable liquid to the space or vacancy between the plates for the purpose of hardening and rendering more li rm the contents of the cup while on the jaw.
Nothing for the outward form of the said plates nor for the application of the same to the mouth merely to take impressions, but the method ot using the gate, as described.
