Specification of Letters Patent.

T0 all whom, it may concern:
Be it known that we, GEORGE B. HINMAN and FRANK F. SPENCER, citizens of the United States, and residents of Danville, in the county of Pittsylvania and State of Virginia, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Foot Latches or Bolts, of which the following is a specification.
Our invention relates to an improvement in foot-bolts for doors and the object is to provide a bolt which can be easily applied, is durable, and not easily broken by the rough usage to which such articles are subjected.
A further object is to provide a foot-bolt consisting of few parts, capable of being easily and cheaply constructed from pressed steel or the like, and which will be effectual in the performance of its function.
With these objects in view our invention consists in certain novel features of construction and combinations of parts, which will be hereinafter described, and pointed out in the claims.
In the accompanying drawings, Figure 1 is v a plan view. Fig. 2 is a side elevation. Fig. 3 is a section on line 3 3 of Fig. 1. Fig. 4 is a section on line 4 4 of Fig. 1 and Fig. 5 is a side view, and Fig. 6 is a plan view, of the socket plate or keeper.
A represents a back plate, preferably made from sheet-steel, it being provided with slots 1 1 and offset portions 2 2 at either side of the slots, these offset portions being raised above the plane of the back plate a distance equal. to or approximately equal to the thickness of the back plate.
Strap-plates 3 3 of inverted-U shape are fitted to the slots 1 1, being adapted to enter them from beneath the back plate, their flanges 4 4 fitting and filling the spaces beneath the offset portions 2 2 of the back plate, so that their lower surfaces are flush or substantially fiush with the lower surface of the back plate. Holes 5 and 6 are formed one above the other and in alinement with each other in the offset portions 2 2 and the flanges 4 4 of the strap-plates, respectively, they being adapted to receive screws or bolts which not only hold the device securely in place on the door, but also hold lthe strapplates and back plate securely together. Holes 7 7 may also be provided in the back plate to receive screws or bolts as an additional means for holding the device in position.
The bolt 8 is fitted to slide in the strapplates and is provided with the usual handle 9 at one end and with a shoulder 10, adapted to engage the inner edge of the adjacent strap-plate when the bolt is forced into the socket, the spring 11 operating to throw it into this position, so that the bolt has to be forced backward at the handle end against the action of the spring in order to release it preparatory to lifting it out of the socket plate or keeper. A stop 12 limits its outer movement and also serves as a means for securing the spring in position on the back plate.
A socket plate or keeper 14, preferably made of cast-iron, is provided with an open- `ing 13 to receive the bolt and with tapering spurs 15 15, which frictionally retain it in place in the hole bored to receive it, thus dispensing with the necessity of screws for holding it in position on the threshold or elsewhere.
From the foregoing it will be seen that we have provided a very simple and efficient form of foot-bolt capable of use especially upon heavy doors, although equally applicable to lighter doors.
An advantage of our invention is that lit may be stamped out of pressed steel, and the parts can all be easily and quickly assembled, while at the same time it affords a better, stronger, and more easily applied foot-bolt than any now on the market.
It is evident that slight changes might be resorted to in the form and arrangement of the several parts described without departing from the spirit and scope of our invention,
and hence we do not wish to limit ourselves to the exact construction herein set forth; but,

through said strap-plate and retaining it in position in the slot, and means for limiting the movement of' the bolt in both directions apd for preventing its removal from the strapp ate.
3. A lateh comprising a back-plate having a slottherein and offset portions adj aoent to the slot, strap-plate of inverted-U' shape fitted to the slot and provided With flanges adapted to fill the spaces beneath the offset portions of the back plate7 said offset portions and fianges having alned holes to reoeive screws or bolts, and a bolt fitted to slide through the strap-plate and upon the bask plate.
' 4. In a slideebolt, the combination with a= body comprising a flat portion having a longitudinal slot, and longitudinal raised portions disposed at opposite sides of the slot; of a platehaving a channel portion resting in the slot of the body and flat portions resting back of the raised portions of the body and flush With the flat portions thereof7 and a bolt disposed in the channel portion ofthe plate and against the face of the body.
